View Full Version : Great coffee places!
I'll start.
Artisan Foccaceria in Darlinghurst. Really good coffee. Smooth! My daily cup
Vela Nero in the city. Hard to park though
Campos Coffee in Newtown - use to be great
Gusto in Bondi Beach - always busy
Single Origin in Surry Hills - I heard they are great, haven't actually tried them yet.

I've been to Single Origin in Surry Hills. I didn't feel cool enough to be there to be honest. I'm not cool enough to hang with the Fixie Hipsters!
In the end of the day I love my own coffee. HEAPS of soy in a tall mug and Vittoria coffee done in a plunger. No sugar, perfect temperature. I like it my way every day, keeps me regular

There's also one in Coogee, my mum (who was a barista in our shop for several years, *shameless plug* Luneburger German Bakery in the Queen Victoria Building) swears by it and goes there a loooot. Not as packed as Bondi Beach, so they've all got time to chat and so on.

I must say there is NO good coffee in Broadway, if anyone knows of a place please let me know.

Coffee Trails just outside central station...i love it here because the coffee isn't bitter like other places, its more thick and creamy. Don't see what all the fuss is with Campo's...and ditto that Toby's Estate place at Broadway.
Grind @ Cronulla is freaking awesome as well.
<creeps into thread>
I don't drink coffee hehe.
Although I do feel like I'm missing out on that oomph in the morning most people have after they drink it. I usually drink Pepsi Max at lunch or dinner (1 or two cans a day)

I was just going to say!!! Coffee Trails!! This is not a shameless plug for dear Jonno!! But the coffee really is fantastic!! Having worked as a barista, I can truely agree with you that the coffee is good for a quick take away! I've had some horribly bitter and burnt coffee... it truely ruins my day :(

Frenchie,
Maybe should meet you @ single origin, huh.
I love my coffee too.
Sonoma they are the bread people, right?
Seems a lot of coffee trailz recommendation. Might check that out too if I'm in the area.
And yes Nespresso pods great too for lazy Sundays

Nespresso are not as good as a freshly brewed coffee, but if you factor in the convenience factor they are very good.

I LOVE my coffee!!!
I'm going to live in this thread hahaha.
Allpress in Zetland has great coffee. I'm also a big fan of Grind in Cronulla and Kafeino in Cronulla. Kafeino use Di Lorenzo which is great coffee.
When I'm in the city I'm usually at Toby's Estate or Hernandez. Hernandez is a great little cafe just outside Kings Cross...very nice coffee there too!
Here at work we're all coffee nuts, we have the good machine and between say 30-40 coffee drinkers we do over 1100 coffees/month on the machine haha.
I agree. Di Lorenzo makes great beans! Artisan Focacerria use them. My favourite spot!
Allpress is also quite good. Fuzion works across the road from it. Lucky him.

Bar Colluzzi, Darlighurst Rd. An institution. I used to delivery pastries there at 4am when I was 14 years old (20 years ago). Old man Coluzzi - no longer in the shop - used to serenade all his clientele in Italian at that hour. And don't bother asking for a large - no dice.
You know you're in the right place when you share your morning cup with Neil Perry.;)

Bourke St Bakery was ok when I worked there in 2008. Isn't there a Toby's Hill Estate around the corner on City Rd? If you mean Broadway Shopping Centre, I'd suggest you drink tea.

Tim what's your favorite cheese? mines NIMBIN, brilliant stuff.
Tim,
I was about to compliment your crema artistry until I scrolled the little bit further to realise this was a poster style pic (and 'shopped, most likely).
Has anyone done a coffee/alcohol detox? I am not ready for that, yet.
haha both are hard to do, especially when working full time!
I still don't know why people think coffee is so bad for you, 1-2 a day isn't so bad right? :)

Ahhhhh coffee. Another favourite of mine.
Have been addicted to the stuff for years.
There are a few good places here in Melbourne for a good coffee, but more and more bad ones popping up these days.
For the last 5 years i have been spoilt with a great home setup and fresh beans
This is my little corner of the kitchen :)

cheers mate. I just got sick of drinking bad coffee so decided to learn and do it myself.
The down side though is you get spoilt, so going out for a coffee gets worse
Ristretto for me, John :)
Coffee is actually good because it have a lot of anti oxidant. The caffeine is bad because addictive not to mention the staining to your chompers! Moderation people. The key is moderation.

hehe i'm with 10d, no donuts with coffee
10d, i like your taste. Ristretto is good.
Ristretto is wankery used by people who know what it is! If you go to most average coffee shops and ask for it they will just look at you funny.
I think going to such extremes sucks the joy out of enjoying a nice espresso.
Id wager that most couldnt pick the difference between a standard shot of espresso and a ristretto if the volume didnt give it away!
Re: biscotti. Its the only thing that accompanies my coffee. I am known to bake my own from time to time. Although they dont last long.

Tim, you supply the biscotti and i'll take care of the coffee :)
you certainly look well equipped!
Tim, sorry for being wankery, but I prefer the less bitter taste of the ris than the full on espresso.
My coffee guy always serve me two shots of ristretto for my morning caps.
Almond biscotti, hmmmm.

I don't drink coffee but most of the people i know think campos is really good in Newtown, and in my "local" area, Sonoma Bakery in Waterloo apparently does great coffee, i love the food more.
really good espresso isnt that bitter.
Ive found that grinding the beans as I use them ends up in a much smoother taste. Pre ground coffee tastes very bitter not long after the bag gets opened.

Campos is good, but used to be better. Sonoma is also good, but have to agree with you, their bread is to die for. Haha

Care to make me a cuppa?
I only make coffee for me! too many snobby mates that are willing to stick their noses up at my efforts!
I dont proclaim to be a coffee connoisseur but I think what comes out of my cheap arse machine tastes better than what gets served to me at most places. Thats mostly because they are serving crap moreso than im making anything special though :D

i'm with Tim, that if the coffee bean is fresh, ground properly for the machine in use it should not be bitter
T, understandable. I can't make coffee, that's why I got a Nespresso at home. But I do admire people who put real effort in making a good cuppa.

Well, most of the places I go to ground as they make. Maybe the roast??

could be a combination of things.
old beans (they purchase bulk name brands rather then going to local roasters)
wrong grind
not a clean machine
i have experienced the same many times, but then at home and at the better coffee shops, its beautiful
True, J. Taste is also very subjective. I myself don't like dark roast. That is why I started this thread. I have been visiting the places the good people in this forum has suggested in search of the perfect cup for me. :)
Cibo / Rundle Street & Melbourne Street (the coffee is pretty good too)
Brown Dog Cafe / Goodwood S.A (amazing food too (breakfast a spec.)

I whore myself out to 3 places in Surry Hills near my work depending on what i feel like etc.
Campos Coffee Cart on Chalmers Street is pretty consistently good.
Cook & Archies (Vittoria) on Rutland/Buckingham St is where i sometimes have meetings. Super friendly and pretty good most of the time. New Barista last week wasn't as good.
Gallery Cafe (Numero Uno Beans) on Devonshire. My regular. When it's good it's amazing. But sometimes it's not but Mark the owner (and barista) is a legend and does magic tricks. Haha. I have some loyalty there.
Near me on the North Shore i go for:
Pablo and Rustys in Gordon is great.
Fina Espresso Bar on Archer St in Chatswood is amazing. Only been a few times but always super

I'm gonna chime in for Corelli's in Newtown. It's run by Lesbians trying to hard to look like Lesbians but it's always consistent and the cheese cake rules.
Why has no one said "Toby's Estate" on City Road?
Also there's one further down called The Moose Espresso Cafe. Go out the back into the courtyard.
Further west, Parramatta Park Cafe is always good. Dodge the cyclists and mum's during the day. Also there is a Campos joint called "Limeline" in the Sydney Water building in Parramatta. Across from that is called "Beanie" A touch up market for Parra but it's a great place to hide.
Finally there's a place I go to in Springwood often with a green MK1 in the driveway. Serves free beer also... ;-)
