So this is the 1981 Mk1 GTi I bought off a mate of mine. He shipped it over from the UK in about 2004, drove it for a couple of years and then it started gathering dust and rust (and tree sap - ouch) in his driveway before he offloaded it to me. Few minor things needed for the roadworthy, which i'm hoping to get done in a couple of weeks (but i've been saying that for months)...

It started life as a bog standard Inari Silver 1.6 and had a ground up rebuild about 7-8 years ago, all rust removed and new patches welded in, a 1.8 engine dropped in, front and rear torsion bars, and various other things. Once i've got it road legal again, it's going to be tracked from time to time and then who knows...

close up it ain't so pretty. roof needs a respray as it's been annihilated by tree sap while parked up. that's last on the list to do as it's going to be pricey.

What kit is on it?

not 100% sure but i believe it's a Zender kit. the roof spoiler is definitely a Zender one.

Good stuff very nice looking, but that kit is a clipper kit from a mk1 convertible :)

Haha, awesome! Thank you. Silk green has to be my least favourite of the old skool colours, so you have my blessing. :p

Found out some more about the history of my car. It has a 1781cc engine made up of a Passat block and a Scirocco head, mated to a Mk2 GTi gearbox. There's some sort of sports camshaft that makes it seriously lively over 3000rpm all the way to the redline. According to the dyno test done when it was crafted (around 2003), it pushes out 127.3bhp at the flywheel and about 99 at the wheels. The roof was originally from an Audi 80 and has an electric sunroof. The door handles were also replaced at the same time from the donor 80. Interior is pretty much original.

One day i'll get around to scanning in all the photos of the build, but i've been saying that for the last eight months or so...

All that's left to go on the project now is fitting the sunroof mechanism back in now it's cleaned up and greased properly, fit the fuse for the alarm/central locking and put the lower dashboard pieces back on, and it's roadworthiness time with much crossing of fingers...
