Hey guys
Just recently ive been experiencing a lot of scraping on the right side of my car when turning left.
Its starting to happen more often now. THe 1st time it happened was on the last cruise that cam and I organised on the 31st of May when going up Mac pass and hard on the brakes, then on my way back going up Mt Keira same thing happened but i didnt break that hard. Then last weekend when i drove up to Syd there was a sharp left and i went around pretty fast and scraped ARGHHH. Today took my mate for a spin in the car and went around two corners ive been around plenty of times (both left hand turns) and it scraped.....
Whats wrong? Need new suspension?
Thanks for the help in advance
No i havent gained weight for those with the smart comments :P
Cheers

Rob, check the struts for leaks. Also I would not do any harm yo check your wheel alignment.
Your hard driving might knock a few things loose >D

Hey Ian
I think its the actual body scraping the ground. But then again im not 100% sure, its loud i can tell you that.
Its when i turn left, doesnt have to be that sharp either.
Here is a vid of a corner it never scraped on

When i went through that corner today it scraped.
Cheers

Rob, you'd have to be awfully low for the body to be scraping!
Have you had it up on a jack yet?
make sure the lug nuts are tight, jack it up
check for shock leaks
check the hub bearing; Place your hands at 12:00 and 6:00 on the wheel and try to wiggle it in a rocking motion. Any free play movement is bad

Hey Ian
I havent put it up on the jack yet. It might be the tyre scraping on the plastic then?
Ill do it first thing tomorrow morning.
Thanks for your help.
What do you think the problem is?

not sure? lol
if it's just tyre scraping on plastic, you'll see rub marks in the wheel wheels.
running aftermarket suspension or wheels?

I have aftermarket wheels but they aren't any bigger then the originals.
Arghhh this is soo frustrating lol
it was kind of embarrassing hearing a scraping noise when taking a mate for a spin
Solution?

what are the specs on the aftermarket wheels?
and the tyres?

Have you removed the screw that always rubs?

I have no idea what the specs are on the wheels, I got them from here but it has no info on the specs
http://www.stgeorgetyres.com.au/euro.htm
The tyres are 225/40/R18
Have you removed the screw that always rubs?
Where is that screw and what does it do?

Boys
p.s jacked up the car today couldnt see anything leaking, loose, or scratched.
It in the inner guard towards the outside, roughly in middle of the wheel arch!
Will try and find a thread on it!

The problem is there is no problem, well there is but its VW's fault, "even stock R32's rub under braking and turning"

very interesting.
Dont' know the problem either. If its srubbing its very easy to tell the noise.
Rob in WJ's post about the new Golf R he referred to the rubbing issue AP mentioned.
Think that answers your question
:)
The Golf R is definitely an improvement over the front heavy Golf R32, which exhibited much more understeer, swaying under heavy braking and with the occasional rub of the front top inner fender screw due carrying the heavy V6 motor up front. With 35kg less over the front axle than the MKV R32, the Golf R is beginning to feel more BMW 50/50 like in weight distribution. With the front to rear balance much improved over the previous model, the Golf R adds reassurance and ease of effort when hustling via a series of bends. The reduction in weight and improved weight distribution front to rear certainly improves grip levels over the outgoing R32 MKV Golf.
and if its any consolation...
The Golf R doesn’t look any better than the Golf GTI, probably worse in my opinion, especially with the 18” wheels that look smaller than the 18” GTI Detroit Wheels. The 19” Golf R wheels on a 235 series tyre is guaranteed to rub against the top inner fender screw

How old is your car Rob and how many travelled kms? Have you tried pushing the car with your hand on the left front hand side and see if it is stiff or whether it is soft and bounces? Maybe your shocks are leaking? I suggest go to a suspension shop and get them to test it out before deciding to get it replaced when the problem may not be the suspension. Good luck with it.

Rob aren't you really low? The car looked dumped in some photos i saw.
Otherwise could be a leaking shock??
Nah Rob's car is stock height
:)
Looks a bit deceiving from certain angles.
