Yeap I'm one of the few members on here who don't own a Golf but that might soon change.
My Mum drives a MKV Pacific. My sister and brother-in-law drive a MKV FSI and my fiance drives a white MKV R32. I've got a 2 Nissan Skylines and I had an ED Civic.
Since launching VWgolf.net.au with Suga last weekend I've been thinking about buying a Golf (obviously!) but there was no way I was ever going to even begin to justify buying one whilst still owning the ED and the 2 Skylines.
As of today the ED Civic is no longer.
Shame as the ED cost me nothing to buy, nothing to run, costs nothing in insurance, great on fuel and it's the only car we've got that can comfortably carry my bikes too. There really wasn't any need at all for me to sell it except I couldn't justify owning 4 cars to myself (not right now anyways, still dreaming of my 7 car garage though!).
So I put up an EOI on JDMST yesterday and my inbox was 100% full this morning. I had one kid that was offering a deposit on the car unseen as he's been following my build thread and planning to buy it all along. A few people have PM'ed me along the way about the car too. A mate of mine test drove it last night and was convinced he was coming back today to hand over the cash but I got a call from a guy who came over an hour ago he took it, the car is now sold!

Goodbye Bunky. You were great.
So, that means I'm now on the lookout for a Golf. Options galore! I have 2 distinctly different directions I'm thinking about. Decisions decisions!
Its sad to see cars go isn't it Justin.
So what sort of Golf are you looking at?
GTI, :R or TDI?
Prior to my GTI I had a 2.0L TDI MY07 MKV Comfortline which was a great car. Had it colour coded, sunroof installed, satnav, rs4 reps. The amount of torque the little TDI engine makes is outstanding. Are you thinking something newer MKV or MKVI? Or MK3 or MKIV?
Personally if I had the money I'd have one of each haha. I love em all!!

I am keeping an eye out for a little Japanese Automatic cheap run around, so let me know if you come across anything!?
So which path are you taking young skywalker?
Goodbye, Bunky. I'm quite sure you having separation anxiety, eh Justin?:-)
Your Golf definetely need to be a turbo, either diesel or petrol. SUGA already have the R. Maybe those newing widebody as well. Since you got the skylines, you don't need a trackable car, so Bags would be the way to go. Wheels? You got good taste so I won't recommend any to you. Colour? BMP would be a nice contrast to SUGA's CW.

VR6 was something special to me once. They still turn my head out on the streets too but I just can't go there. Too old like the ED was and it's not quite as old skool cool as the Civic was, might never be as raw and fun to drive either. I'm also trying not to consider MK4's and R32's. MK4's because I'm thinking they're a little old too and R32's are out because Suga already has one. I'd really love a 3 door as I have no need for extra doors, that limits my choices if I am hunting for a bargain though. Just thinking out loud:
I am considering:
- MKV
- MKV GTI
- MK6
Direction 1
Concept: A track car for the road.
Loud when I want it to be (Varex? (http://www.xforce.com.au/cars/view_car/29)) a handling machine, responsive due to being light weight, dead clean stock car look outside, race inspired emotion inside.
- Manual or DSG: I've always been impressed with Hollinger gearboxes in real race cars. I look at DSG as a poor man's version of it! (yes I have a vivid imagination!).
- Strip it. Aim to get rid of 150kg. Rear seats, front race seats, carpet, trims, spare wheel, tools, sound deadening tar removal, roof lining, lighter exhaust and wheels.
- Race suspension (also lighter) and semi slicks.
Direction 2
Concept: Slamburglar.
Less is more and it's all about the stance.
- Airbag suspension so I can drop the car to the ground at car meets and for photo shoots.
- Debadge, desticker, remove rear wiper, colour code everything, super clean, less is more.
- Re-upholster all trims with custom fabric including roof liner.
Seems like you're already on the right track, mate!
Race car vs show car? Hmm. Either way will be awesome.
Will it be custom paint as well? If that's the case 3dr MkV GTI the go! Lots of parts available. And IMHO the mkV look Fatter and Wider than the MkVI. Kinda like my ass :-)

This would be your daily right? Direction 2.
After seeing your ED though, it would be awesome to see what you would do with a Mk3 2.slow.

you sir has great taste!!
JFox, if u go Option 1, dun get DSG particularly if u want to mod for power.
since u have a GTR for track duty, i'd suggest Option 2. also buy a manual one so Suga can learn in it.

My God John, what an epic post above. Outside, that's how the R32 should have been in my opinion. WIDE!!! And inside, yeah that gets me!!!
Still tempted to go the bags, especially on a low spec Golf. Would be new to me but yes, really not sure if I would like a car that doesn't handle though. :icon_neutral:

I blame this forum for pushing my want... more like NEED for a MkV GTI. I really really really want one. Unfortunately - in my current employment situation, I won't be committiing myself to a loan I may not be able to afford if my contract is not renewed in June. Must think financially first. I AM determined to get it though, I really want it and currently saving up!
I've always been torn between wanting a classic old school bug as a resto project to a car thats got the creature comforts and the power. But i've decided to put the old school on hold for later on in life, and to feed my thirst for more power now. :)

What's everyone's verdict on the Golf's Diesel engines?? Most manufacturers are investing more into Diesel technology but is it good enough to take it over petrol engines now?? Would you consider TDI over TSI engine if you're getting the new golf??
since the launch of mkvi, I been having the thought of getting one at the end of this year =D but I don't really know much about where the VW Diesel engines are standing these days. =(
Well i guess i am another one to join this list. Im selling my MX5 and plan to replace it with a mk4 gti, i know the mk4 gti was a little sluggish and soft, but i do plan to the rid the car of those bad attributes.
The mk4 just fits the budget at the moment and ticks a lot of other boxes for me as well.
And yes, like Serial Killa i have been told im mad for getting rid of the 5. But do have plans on buying another one in the future.

Considering that you'll most likely spend another 50% of the purchase price on maintenance on top, I'd say yes you are crazy! Although if you're really that dedicated to buying a VR6 (going as far as to get rid of an S15 for it!) then restepc to you mate :)

Just more thinking out loud:
I'm still really struggling with trying to justify spending up on a MKV GTI. I've seen a few getting close to the $25k mark but $30k mark is more realistic. $30k in one go isn't an option for me unless I sell my V35 Skyline which I don't want to just yet. Also I've been looking at the interiors of these GTI's, they're nice and I'm not sure if I'd be willing to rip one up or not.
I also have to consider that if I do get a GTI I'd most likely be pouring in another $10-15k on it in mods. That bumps it up to $40-45k all up. This kinda thinking is making me seriously consider a standard MKV Golf. $15k + some handling mods will already bring a smile to my face and I'll happily rip the rear seats out so that I can get my bike/s in there easily. I'd care a little less for it too (less precious). Insurance will also be a lot cheaper.

LOL Frenchie, that just gets more and more pimp as you scroll down the page!!!
OK, here's an update. Just so everyone knows I'm serious!
I inspected a car today. A MKV Sportline. 2.0, manual is what I've been looking at. This one was particularly cheap so I had my mechanic Dedy at Top One Automotive in Arncliffe check it out. The previous owner would not admit to whether or not the car has been in an accident, that was already alarm bells but he was more than happy to let me inspect the car (I told him I'd rather save the time and cash for the inspection but it's not utopia so I didn't expect someone I didn't know to be honest with me).
I got to Top One on time but the guy came early and Dedy already had the Golf on the hoist. He seemed like a super nice guy and he gave me a story about understanding the vehicle check, as he had once checked out a car where the seller had said the car was immaculate, he paid $200 for Sydney Vehicle Check to do a full check-up only to find out the car had been rolled and the roof was full of bog!
Right when he said this Dedy pointed out that the entire left side of the car has been resprayed. The seller then admitted to me that he had been backed into and yes, the car has been repaired.
It wasn't major damage but the repair job wasn't great, in fact none of the paint was great. The guy is one of those people that neglect their cars. It's a MKV Golf yet the paint looked like a car from the 80's, almost like it had not been cleaned for 5 years. The headlights were all worn from sun damage too, completely yellow and one was cracking. The inside was just as bad. Feathers (?!) dirt and wear and tear everywhere. Insane for a MKV. At this stage it was looking like a restoration job was needed!
Dedy then points me out to warn suspension bushings. Fairly low km's (70,000kms) so all Golf owners beware here as all Golfs might have this problem. Also the drivers side CV boot was torn and Dedy said he would have to totally remove the drive shaft in order to fit a new boot! VW! That's time and time is money.
Next up: Fault codes. Dedy plugged a laptop in and ran a diagnostic on the Golf. He printed out the results. The 5 pages were like an electronic diagnostic history from the ECU. A few airbag light failure warnings, one for the engine (lift/timing?) but since the light only came on for an instant he didn't think it was a huge problem (man this guy does the best vehicle checks in the world!!!).
At this stage the seller was praising my mechanic. He was blown away and asked him for a card so that he could book him in to check the next car he's buying!
OK, time for a drive: Start car? Oh, car didn't start nice at all. Battery is almost dead (the error codes mentioned this too, awesome huh?). Battery needs to be replaced right away. Oh, what's that sound? "tippety tappety tippety tappety". Dedy told me the car missed it's 60km service and suggested I change the timing belt and water pump whilst I was at it as they are known to fail on these cars.
Add it all up, that's $4k+ of work I have to do just to get this car back to being reliable and clean. I deducted $4k from his asking price and he said no, fair call, best of luck to him.
Lessons learnt: If it seems too good to be true it probably is too good to be true.
The hunt continues!
Justin,
Dedi is really Top, eh?
FYI, we will be selling our MkV 2.0 FSI Sportline too. Interested?

Okay - being 21 and all - I just did a check on insurance for a MKV GTI with AAMI. $3188. That changes my mind completely - goodbye GTI :( (at least for a few years... until insurance costs stop biting me up the bum). That is ONE cost I cannot justify and a track I do not want to go down. Maybe it is time to go back to old(er) school :) Now thats exciting!

Justin: Yeah the second hand car thing can be a dangerous road, good to see you have an awesome mech, helps heaps. From memory Cam when he was looking to buy his GTI looked at one at a dealership that was reported as 'immaculate' ended up being an absolute lemon. Hopefully Tendy's car suits, although its auto and if youre after the manual then it may be back to the drawing board.
shida: Ouch $3K for insurance is mad, I remember when I had a subaru (RS not WRX) and it was cheaper to catch the ferry from sydney to tassie, insure the car and register it for 12 months than to register and insure at my then Watsons Bay address, mad I say.

Ahh life in the puss, and yes thats is the real nickname for the Navy...
Navy = Pussers (traditional name based on all the STD sailors used to get in the old days)
Army = Pongos, because where ever they go, the.....
AirForce = Pansies, because they're all girls and dress in powder blue.
Just some random facts for everyone :D
Sorry to hear the car wasn't good Justin.
As Nath mentioned I've just been through the whole saga with my GTI. I looked at a GTI in Drummoyne. In the photos it looked great, the guy said it was absolutely spotless (no dents or scratches) it was practically new. We explained that as we lived down the coast if we liked it we would be driving it back after all arrangements had been made. The guy said no worries, I wouldn't stuff you around its actually being detailed tomorrow blah blah blah it will be all ready for you when you come up.
We get up to Drummoyne (Nowra to Drummoyne = http://tinyurl.com/ygnc39d long way) and the car is filthy. Huge dent on the passengers door, huge scrape on the drivers front guard, leaves inside the door hinges that have been there for ages, scratches galore inside, craploads of rattles and other annoying noises and no service history. Yet he said it had full service history and he didn't even know where to find the books!
We've just been through the same saga looking for a car for my brother. My father and I have driven up and around Sydney to look at cars in yards/private sellers and hardly any of them check out. People will blatantly lie over the phone. One example, we looked at a MKIV 2.0 Golf which the guy said it had full service history (including all receipts IN HIS HANDS as we were speaking) and the timing belt done as it had over 100,000kms. We get up into Canterbury to look at the car and he didn't have any of the receipts. The timing belt hadn't been done and it was 20k overdue for a service.
Second example, we looked at a 1.9 TDI Polo in Thornleigh. The guy said it had a few small scratches on the paintwork but nothing too serious. We get up there and the car looked like it had been taken for a joyride or an ATM ram raid. The roof had been jumped on, dents everywhere, front bumper was all cracked, headlight smashed and a pile of other things. To top it off, the guy we were dealing with rings us up later on in the day when we were heading home (he wasnt there in the morning when we went to look at the car) and abuses us for not buying the car. He starts going on about "I took the car off the market under the impression you were going to buy it blah blah" and starts swearing at us on the phone. The car had been off the market for half a day and we had made no such commitment.
We must have looked at about 8 or more cars and none of them were in good condition. Very hard to find a decent car.
There are some really really really dodgy people out there.
However, there are also some extremely nice people out there. Like the gentlemen I bought my GTI from. He looked after it like I look after all my cars and he genuinely loved cars.
When we were looking I just couldn't believe how poorly some people treat their cars. Ranging from not servicing on time to blatantly just trashing the car. Very very sad to think there are awesome cars out there that just don't get looked after.

What do you guys think of this? If I can knock it down it would be substantially cheaper than a GTI, almost as fun and cheaper to insure (maybe not?!).

Seems reasonable the GT, and would allow you to play some more with the look of the car and concentrate less on the performance, make it into a real show car.
The price seems alright however maybe a little high, but this may be due to the less than average kms. Redbook is:
Valuation Prices
* Private Price Guide $23,600 - $26,300
* Trade In Price Guide $19,300 - $22,000
* Average Km 45,000 - 75,000
As for insurance not sure, logic would say insurance would be low however you never know till you ask

Justin you should talk to Tinto, he had a DSG GT Sport so will be able to fill you in.

My sister has the GT sport and from my knowledge she doesnt pay all that much insurance for it. Ive driven a few times and actually love the lightness of the engine and the pick it has in it. I say go for it and see how things go from there. I know that whatever you do it is going to be amazing!

shida - $3k is rather steep. Do Bingle cover it? They would be cheaper surely.
Just had a quick quote done - $3052 for a 06' model GTI
:(
It's very likely that it's got to do with my post code as well! Can't wait to move!!! lol

I've spammed out a whole lot of un-realistic-low-ball-offers on carsales today. I've had a few replies. Most people are willing to know off $1500 from their advertised price but I'm asking for more like $5k off!!!

did you see this one (http://www.drive.com.au/used-cars/VOLKSWAGEN/GOLF/Sydney/detail.aspx?id=13866195&lid=13866195&pg=3&pp=3&d=0&SG=1372640898&pt=1)?
not sure if its a manual or the actual condition, but its a mk5 GTI

I still miss my GT TSI.
So much torque off the mark from that 1.4.
Revs smoooooothly right the way through - like nothing I've experienced before.
You get GTI looks with a Jetta style nose, and you can get subtle add-ons like R line fog grills (I'll be flogging a set when I clear out the shed).
The TSI won't gear down when you hit a hill (unlike my GTI), it will just turn the supercharger back on to get a new wave of torque. I love it.

Nah red is fine now. I've got to get over the fear of red cars turning pink as I'd most likely sell it before it goes pink right?!

TSI's are a fun little car, definately an option if your in the market for a cheaper MK V with some go :D

^^ They're the same size (just kidding - now I sound like I have wee man syndrome) ;)
Very happy with my GT TSI - I liken it to GTI Lite.
On a number of GTGs I've found the on road performance gives away little to the GTI (puts on flame suit) until you get into illegal territory and the around town 'squirt' is excellent and fun with all the whines, farts and hisses.
The only downside is very little aftermarket parts are available at the moment however with the Mk6 TSI becoming the mainstream model this will surely change in the near future. I'd definitely recommend getting behind the wheel to see if you like it - they're probably not for everyone though so try before you buy. I'd compare the feel of the engine to be diesel like at lower revs (when on supercharger) then more a rush from 4000rpm when the turbo is fully boosting.

So Justin, not sure if you've seen these but here they are in case:
2006 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF V GTI (http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/private/details.aspx?R=8275281&__Qpb=true&Cr=&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_Price_Decimal|1|| pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=834 1216 1247 1282 1252 1246 4294962746 4294962677 1558 898 414 4294927728&SearchAction=N&silo=1011&PriceTo=414&CT=Compare&__Nne=15&__sid=1251AF542DA6)
Looks pretty good, manual, 5 door in black - $25K with 103K on the clock
2006 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF V GTI (http://www.carpoint.com.au/all-cars/dealer/details.aspx?R=8399656&__Qpb=true&Cr=&__Ns=pCar_RankSort_Int32|1||pCar_Price_Decimal|1|| pCar_Make_String|0||pCar_Model_String|0&keywords=&__N=834 1216 1247 1282 1252 1246 4294962746 4294962677 1558 898 414 4294927728&SearchAction=N&silo=1011&PriceTo=414&CT=Compare&__Nne=15&__sid=1251AF542DA6)
Again from the pics looks clean, can seea slight gutter rash on one of the shown rims, but looks good. Manual in Shadow Blue, which is nice, and only 47K on the clock. They however want $29,900 so it may be out of you budget.
ok in my quest for a decent mkiv gti, i have come across the mkiv v6 4motion.. there is only one for sale on carsales. It's on there for 20k.. It is seriously tempting... does anyone have any idea if there are any more of these around and is that price reasonable? Also was this model sold in australia or would this be imported?

Paul thanks for the review. I'm slowly coming to another conclusion now: GTI over GT as the price is too close and I am also re-considering an FSI as this really just has to carry my bikes and I need it now that the ED Civic is gone!
J.T I saw that too. I'd 100% do it. 3 door too!!! That's sooooooo awesome.

this one looks awesome!! seems the engine is stock? (which is good i guess)
not sure about whether it is an import or not so best to check with VWA.

OK my Skyline V35 350GT is up on carsales. IF it sells I'll go all out and get a GTI. Still so many decisions: MKV or MKVI - DSG or Manual. ARGH! Either way I'm kinda excited!

Justin if you decide on the MK6 GTI it can ONLY be in carbon steel or black with 18inch detroits =)

Justin looking at the 2 direction you mentioned in going with (dropping or racing).. i'd most likely go with an MKV (even tho I like them less than the MKVI).
Reason being that it'll be a hell of a lot cheaper to buy, which means more money for mods. If you do buy the MKVI, dont buy Carbon Steel - crap color. :D
ps. I cant believe were going to have the same cars AGAIN!

personally between Mkv and mkvi, i'd buy a mkv and do it up if u have big plans.
if u only want a daily, i'd buy a mkvi and put a chip in.
the OEM 18s huffs/detroits are bloody heavy. my fuel consumption has gone up by 2L/100km around town and the car seems to take longer to stop. given Justin's baller status, some lightweight Advans etc would probably be a better choice lol. (or just fit Suga's OEM 18s)

whoa, i wasnt expecting this to happen! lol.. im sure you wont have any troubles getting rid of it though. Your bikes will love you for it though :) It's a step or six up from the bunky..
Goodluck with sale though

Cheers man. I'm going to need it on this one as there are just so many of them in the market and all of them are older (thus a LOT cheaper) than my one.
I wouldnt worry too much, i was in the exact same position when selling the mx5, my asking price was premium for 1990 model, but it had very low kms & was in excellent condition. There is always someone willing to pay that bit more for a tidy car.

Yup considering sending him a message but if I sell the V35 it's GTI all the way. He's far away though but I did just notice he has a tow bar thingy, now that would be awesome for the bikes!
well after many hours of searching & research, i have finally replaced the mx5 with a mkiv gti. Found this one out at camden, it has the oettinger chip installed also and that makes a big difference over the stock car. Cant wait to pick it up next weekend and start driving it :D Oh and cant wait to start modding it also :D
