View Full Version : My Mk1 GLD....

While my mk1 16v is off the road at the paint shop, I been sitting around board out of my brain needing a mk1 fix! I always search for mk1s for sale because i know finding a decent mk1 is hard, i've been searching for around 4 years for a 2nd mk1 as good nick as my 2door and i found it :)

Picked up a 1978 mk1 GLD genuine 150.000kms or so (old speedo stopped working), from a old fellow that has spend alot of time and money keeping her in mint condition. Everything works and i mean everything and no missing trims or should say no cut up trims for speakers haha.

This is what it was and where it is now, still a few things need to be done to tidy her up to my satisfaction. I know pictures can hide alot but this thing has nothing to hide shes mint

What i have done so far. (in the 2 weeks ive owned it)
* hottuning coilovers
* rota jmag 16x7 wheels
* new front/rear bumpers
* changed grills
* duckbill

Still to come.
* front sway bar
* new dashboard
* stealth stereo system
* new guard spats

Thanks for comments guys I love the old girl :D. Just something about old school cars ive alway liked ive been down many paths new, old and imports, seem to always step back into the old stuff my mk1 2door has been with me though most of my fazes. Now with the new addition i think the mk1 bug has been cemented into my brain for the long term.

Yeah thats becoming a money pit haha I have to many bits to list stored in boxes atm, im really waiting to get the car back from paint then as i start to put it back together ill take some pictures and share the process. The car will surprise some people, im going to great extent to get everything new and attention to detail is key with this rebuild. Also thinking my painter has forgotten about me haha he is a busy man so just have to be patient :(.

I have been working while the car has been away, picking up the rest of my parts from the aluminum welder this friday, gearbox is rebuilt with LSD all painted same as engine etc..etc.. 90% of parts going on the car are new sourced high and low at great expense! example: brand new chrome bumpers, new end caps, brackets, bolts and rubber insert. The wheels on the GLD are ment for this car aswell. Over the weekend might take a few more shots.

Shot below are just randoms i took off my phone.

What she used to look like

When she left to paint

Just a couple random shots

Great to see another south Brisbanite :) Love your second Mk1. I'm looking for an Mk1 here in QLD and it's a tough mission! Let me know if you come across any.

Have you got the white Mk1 back from the painter?

Your cars look perfect. I'd say you know plenty given how much work you did.
I have questions about the GLD suspension:
Is GLD suspension different from GTi? Is it easy to lower a little? How bout adding 1degree negative camber on the front?
Any thoughts would help. I just purchased a 1980 GLD. Currently not running, so work to do.
