View Full Version : EOI: [VIC] Group Buy - H&R Street Performance Twin Tube Stainless Steel Coilovers
Pharkus
30-06-2010, 02:07 PM
I've been in contact with Quadrant Suspensions in Victoria: http://www.quadrantsuspensions.com.au/
Subject to some final research I will be looking at purchasing a set of H&R Street Performance Coilovers - Twin Tube Stainless Steel. I am after non-track use, no need for frequent adjustment (so external adjustment not required), some improved performance and lowering for cosmetic improvement (MOOAAH LOW). Of course this will be all subject to insurance and roadworthiness in Victoria etc.
http://www.hrsprings.com/products/coil-overs/
If we can get interest for 5 sets (you can opt for the more expensive ones if you want) there will be some sort of discount, around 15-20% I have been quoted so far. If more than 10, which I doubt the discount will be bigger.
I am not affiliated with Quadrant in any way and am looking at this to save myself some money. I have been quoted $1,372 + $300 fitting for these, which is reasonable for me. Please express your interest in this thread and copy and paste your name to the end of the list for easy reference. For efficiency I will close this thread in 2 weeks as by then I would have made my decision.

Thanks for the interest guys. I will call them next Monday to get a price, hope by then we get 5 or more for a bigger discount.
I have the H&R SPC on my R32 for 2 years now. Great street coilovers in my opinion, probably the best "street" coilovers. Only Height adjustable these coilovers are and its set and forget kind of setup. It can go as low as 50mm but you would not want to do that of course? Its TUV approved as well. If VIC have the same rules as NSW, lowering it at maximum 30mm will pass and wont need an engineering certificate. Go lower than these than you will need to get one.
A review of the SPC can be found @: http://golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?t=62927&highlight=SPC

Thanks Jig, I noticed you linked that the other day, but I've just been too busy to link it myself.
I am only intending to lower 10-15mm on mine initially to see how it settles in. Your car was pushed probably harder than most and in some corners that resulted in some minor rubbing?? So just wanted to avoid that.
In Victoria the rules per VS18 are:
4. Ground clearance
Not less than 100mm and some other requirements which I personally don't think should be breached by this mod (you should check and satisfy yourself that this is correct).
5. Lowering or raising of vehicles
A vehicle may be lowered or raised provided the clearance between a suspension component and its associated bump stop is not altered by more than 1/3 of that specified by the manufacturer. In addition, the original relationship between the front and rear suspension heights must not be unduly affected.
Suspension coil springs must not be shortened by cutting. If lowering blocks are used, they must be manufactured from either steel, aluminium or a metal of equivalent hardness. The vehicle must not be raised by the use of extended or adjustable shackle plates.
So...I have no idea what a bump stop is so am not able to look this up. However, generally you should be able to at minimum get an engineers certificate (I think) to make sure that your car remains legal for road use (this is your own responsibility), and to check with your insurer that you will remain covered by your policy after informing them of the modification.
Of course maybe Tim or even dare I say it Maverick might be able to or already has provided this info in some post elsewhere.

Sorry guys, been real busy at work and also found another place that may be cheaper. I will let you know once I find out. I'm also checking for myself whether or not I can or can't install them for insurance reasons. You will have to make your own mind up as to whether or not you are comfortable with fitting them and getting the ok from your respective road authority and insurance company.

you're with RACV right? It would have no effect on the mods you put on. They treat the car and mods seperately. Thats what they told me when i rang up about my mods.

Yeah it's pretty stupid now. Apparently no need to have the mods listed on the policy as it's "separate". They will assess the mods at the time of claim or something like that. However, me being me I want stuff in writing acknowledging what I have and that it is ok for the overall policy.

Sorry guys, I have been absolutely swamped with work so much so that I haven't had the opportunity to have a proper chat to the guys at Quadrant about the potential group buy. Let alone contacting my insurance company to make sure they have provided me in writing coverage after installation of the coilovers (this is my personal preference).
However, I did have a brief chat to Peter at http://www.magwheelcentre.com.au/ and the prices were already lower for the H&R Sports Performance Coilovers before I even began bargaining with him. They no longer do installs at their work shop but have a place nearby that does it for them. They supply spare BBS wheels at the Porsche GT3 events (read up more about them on the website. Price was better than Quadrant so just have a chat to Peter and tell him that John sent you. I have called him this morning to let him know we have interested members so he should do a good price.
I have not searched or compared with prices overseas so cannot guarantee that this price will be the absolute lowest, but remember you are buying a quality part from a reputable company so you shouldn't expect it to be cheap as chips reject shop style. This is because I would rather be able to sort out warranty issues locally and be covered. You should also ensure that you are comfortable that the installation of the coilovers is legal with your local road authority in your state and that you will be advising your insurance company of the modification as required and remain covered after the modification.
Well that's it. I will most likely be proceeding through this place for the purchase at least and probably installing through Trutrack (Can't remember the place exactly but MKVGTI recommended them) once I get in writing from my insurance company that they will still be covering me.
Thank you all for your patience.

Hey Ibrahim
I called up Peter at mag wheel centre today and told him john recommended me.
I'll quote what he said, "Mate, are you sitting down?"
Me: " No, but should I be?"
Peter: "Yes, $5200"
I asked about group buy / shipping to sydney and he said shipping isn't really effected by the numbers.
Oh and pls also note though $5200 was for my C200 kompressor so golfs could be cheaper? you will have to call up and ask yourself but he said numbers don't really effect shipping charges.
Cheers

I didn't get a pricing on the Merc ones....pricing must be that to match the badge. The quote I got from him for the H&R Sports Performance for my car was much cheaper than that quoted by the other place.
5200 for H&R SPC? or is that for the BBS Wheels?

$5200 for H&R SPC for a Mercedes C200 Kompressor. He didn't tell me how much for a golf. Sorry :(
but he did tell me that postage and handling fees to sydney won't be effected by the number of sets in the sydney group buy.

i instead got some bilstein pss10's from ecstuning.com for 2400 landed, thats including the customs fee of around 400..

hey jose, just wondering are yours the fully adjustable ones or just shocks and springs.
Because yeah i saw this set on ebay for my car: http://cgi.ebay.com/H-R-COILOVER-SPRINGS-08-09-MERCEDES-W204-C63-AMG-/200371678918?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2ea7152ec6
and they are only $1800ish landed too but city performance and mag wheels quoted me $5200 so i'm guessing their set is fully adjustable or something?
I'm actually interested in this set, anyone know where i can get it?
Let me know please, thanks.

Hi Harry, the H&R SPC is only height adjustable. There is no damper or camber adjustment on these coilovers. You can only adjust them also when hoisting the car and you use a special spanner which they provide with the coilover. There is another SPC variant which is the lighter version as well but essentially is still a height adjustable setup only. Unless H&R have changed their SPC approach, I really dont see what other adjustable areas it would have other than height. I would ask them what do they mean by fully adjustable because that is such a loose term. The H&R SPC is perfect for the streets and have the ability to lower if you want to more than 30mm. It has good comfort characteristics as well. The more you lower it, the harsher it gets of course. The only thing I dont like about the H&R SPC is to adjust the height you have to do it the hard way compared to say Bilstein PSS's. When I first installed it, I only had to adjust twice otherwise its a set n forget kind of setup.
KW V1 is equivalent to H&R SPC.

My apologies to all on this one as I had every interest in going through for one of the "final" mods for my car seeing as I am getting wheels delivered soon.
However, due to the way that I want to do mods to my car and my current work load I haven't had the time to speak further to either Quadrant or the other place with regards to a formal group buy. I have posted a few pages back contact details of the cheapest place I could find (pre group buy arrangement). However, there is also a group buy for the PSS10's (not sure if still running) on GolfMkV which was a good price.
However, given the latest numbers I will give the guys a call to see what prices they can do (If I have time today).

If any of the details above are incorrect or if you are no longer interested, please update this post (I can't really negotiate on a price for 10 when people drop out).
I will not negotiate on shipping to your state as there is probably not that much to be saved on that front. You will be responsible for the costs of installation and making sure that you are comfortable that your car remains road worthy and street legal and that your insurance company approves of the modification and that you continue to be covered by your insurance.
Just also keep in mind that the quote we get may not be the most cheap as chips price that is available through the internet (back of a truck) or otherwise, so please don't complain if you can source it cheaper elsewhere. I leave you with this quote from Dusk til Dawn:
"All right, pussy, pussy, pussy! Come on in pussy lovers! Here at the Titty Twister we're slashing pussy in half! Give us an offer on our vast selection of pussy, this is a pussy blow out! All right, we got white pussy, black pussy, Spanish pussy, yellow pussy, we got hot pussy, cold pussy, we got wet pussy, we got [sniffs] smelly pussy, we got hairy pussy, bloody pussy, we got snappin' pussy, we got silk pussy, velvet pussy, Naugahyde pussy, we even got horse pussy, dog pussy, chicken pussy! Come on, you want pussy, come on in, pussy lovers! If we don't got it, you don't want it! Come on in, pussy lovers!
Attention pussy shoppers! Take advantage of our penny pussy sale! If you buy one piece of pussy at the regular price, you get another piece of pussy of equal or lesser value for only a penny! Try and beat pussy for a penny! If you can find cheaper pussy anywhere else, f*ck it!"
Most likely, I will have Peter provide me with a price for the different makes and numbers of people interested. To purchase I can then just give Peter a list of confirmed people to contact him separately to facilitate payment and confirm make model and delivery details.
I will provide an update this afternoon after another call to Peter.

There seems to have been some confusion with quotes etc. I am liaising with the guy now to get a firm price with part numbers etc to avoid any further confusion. However, having said that you will most definitely get a much cheaper price over the internets (things being what they are), the local distributor still has costs that they cannot avoid.

Out of interest, I also plan to sell my H&R SPC soon. I will post it up on the For Sale section and sorry, I wont be responding to posts on this thread nor PM's yet until its up for sale. Keeping things fair.
