i would also be happy with a full race preped Cayman S Turbo for under $150k...

it must be based on initial retail price but even the mentioned of the C63 <$150k is a push pending on the options!!! add mods and being Ramspeed itll be dope, it has to be more then $150k!!!!

There's a story worth publishing in its own right! :) Hopefully with pics of the owners with their cars, along with the City Performance team!

I read the '09 comparison last night and it's even more VAG-focused this year. Looking forward to seeing how Guy's Cayman S turbo turns out, too. :)

Are the tuners allowed to use Hoosier's tyres?

Good question! What's the story with tyre requirements, anyway? That someone gained a massive advantage last time?

Robby_jai
15-07-2010, 04:20 PM
Hoosiers aren't technically allowed so we will see how things go this year also prices are based on rep and the 135 does look very suss in the under 75k category cos it clearly cost well over that.

There is no limit to how much you can spend on mods and it does not add to the total cost of cars when categories are devised

Should be fun.

The categories are based on original RRP, so motor went back through the historical data & checked that out.

No twin groove tyres allowed this year, but in last years format, the Hoosier s didn't give any advantage at all (they were R6 hard compound & require at least a 4 lap warm up). With a single warm up lap, 2 flying laps & a cool down, its pretty hard to get a tyre that's going to work well (and then on the skidpan, the drags & the standing start slalom) so just a good old R compound will be the ticket. Oh, you never know, it may be pissing rain as well.

Hope the Cayman will be ready, it's been at the panel shop for 6 weeks (should have been 3) and only got it back Tuesday morning, so will have to pull some all nighter's to get it sorted. Anyway, we can only get it so good in so many hours.

Will be nice to see the R32's, S3's, Golf R's & FWD Golfs running against the swag of EVO's & STI's - should be an awesome comparison :)

Hear Hear!!! I would love nothing more than a couple of VAG cars to give the establishment (EVO and STI) a couple of stiff uppercuts :) And im sure we'll get the holden and ford fan boys in an uproar should be able to topple a couple of their beloved hero cars :)

There's no way even the RRP of the C63 is below $150k!!!

I'm not sure if it's been answered, but the C63 at City Performance during apmitchell's Scirocco unveiling is no 'ordinary' AMG version. It's pure black label car porn!

It would be great to get some kind of credit to the guys paying for the cars, like our amazing members.

It would be great to see some reference to the rivalry between certain owners for oneupmanship and also for certain members to build three supercars in a row. :P
Not to mention their loyalty to VAG-based sporties, taken to the nth level. :)

This says something about these people and also their great experiences with these cars.

What's the chance of having another reception of some kind, on behalf of our forum's entrants? That would be amazing.

PS. Good luck with the build, guys, and the contributions from interested parties. Why not just ask for Hoosiers? :D

They didn't seem to have any security last year - certainly at the drags, the gates were open.

Problem is they are not catering for spectators, but it's always worth a try!

Thanks Guy. Might tag along with JayC with his ABT supercharged R32 and take some pics. He is doing some serious stuff on his R32 SC right now to prepare for this event. Also keen to see what the C63AMG from Ramspeed is going to do. Its got BRABUS stuff everywhere and your turbo Cayman S Guy. May need to speak to you about this at some point in time.

I think Guy is adding the kit to his Cayman S 3.4L, is this right? I am interested in that too. :)
I would like to see this on the standard 2.9L engine, but the 3.4L S engine is ideal for this challenge!

Sorry Anthony, I got excited about the AMG blackness and forgot it's the rare CLK version. Amazing car, but not the City Performance star-car.

Hey Robby

I'm getting a HPA race clutch built in the US, mechatronic upgrade, upgrade core interlock motor mounts it's over there being built at the moment. I was having troubles with my stock clutch so decided to do the full upgrade not for the Hot Tuner but needed a bit of a rebuild anyway to maximise the extra power from the SC.

The irony is that it may not be ready for the Hot Tuner shoot out, but the condition that the clutch was in anyway wouldn't stood up to any performance driving.

Here's a list of my mods:
ABT Supercharger
Capristo Exhaust
PSS10 Coilovers
Haldex Gen 1
HPA race Clutch & Engine mounts
HPA Mechatronic upgrade
BBS CH 19's
Carbon Mask
2 Baby seats & a set of roofracks :)

I will take some pics once the install is complete in a few weeks & hopefully get to the next GTG.

Cheers

What is the cost for the clutch / mechatronics unit & labour? I have a customer with stage 3 that wants to become a drag racer & I'm sure he will want to do all this first!

Guy

Guy, I've enjoyed your stories on the 987 forum about your Cayman S, so especially look forward to how you go with this.
I recall there being an anti-turbo sentiment on the old 986 forum due to the 986's more fragile engine (I guess), but Rocco gave me the impression that the sentiment toward pressurising the 987 engine is a lot more positive, with the kit you are using.

The 3.4L S is a great, torquey combo on the twisties of the Old Pacific Highway north of Sydney, but I suppose once you go to a track you need a lot more than that.

Bathurst sounds like it was a blast!

Thanks on behalf of a few aspiring Cayman owners, for doing what you've done. Everyone I've spoken to says to get the appropriate LSD 'pack' upgrade and enjoy the car. :)

Although I've been schooled that the Gen2 3.4 is a much better drive than the original, engine and suspension, my budget likely would only stretch to the gen 1 plus a few mods like coilovers etc.

I hope you do well and everything runs as well as it should. :)

Edit to add: we should continue this on the Porsche Talk thread!

I imagine our leading VW bloke is extremely busy with things relating to his Scirocco and other stuff, but hopefully Anthony and Robbie can let us know more when they can. :)

If that is your car Rob or Blake's it takes more than just a near stock R32 to withstand the punishment the Motor tuner challenge throws at it. If you are serious about joining, you need to mod the R32 a bit more than just exhaust. Your on the right track though.

Hey Ben: Sure mate. No reason why you cant visit them anytime. Speak to Thomas or Andrew and I am sure they will be more than happy to show you around. My car is in there right now getting stuff done to it. I will ping you when I am there next. I know AP, Frenchie and Paolo wants to see the ADV wheels when they arrive so will ping you when that happens.

Thomas is a really, really nice guy. He knows everyone but he is not overtly technical. Andrew, the other director is the technical guy. He has a porsche carrera 4s that he tracks regularly. He is into suspension mods rather than power but they recently did an X6M modification by Luma Design in Germany and did 400KW at the wheels. Crazy stuff. I actually went for a drive in that Brabus C63AMG and it made me sick because the G-Force was so brutal.

I cant wait to see the cars in this year's challenge.

wow what a diabolical day for Testing. Rainy on and off all day. Going to be interesting to see how Motor Mag interprets and tallies up the final score. Track lap times in the earlier sessions were faster than the track lap times in the afternoon session and so on....

Just got the magazine today - interesting reading. Wonder why Robby_Jai's S3 nailed some really impressive 0-100Km/hr & 400m times but was wayyyy down on lap times?? Also expected a bit better in the braking department with all that $$$ spent on those anchors.

hey mate my car just wasnt set up for wet track sadly.. and my car is set up super aggressive and stiff for a dry track... so its really to skittish on anything other than a dry track with maximum grip.. the combination of bigger and very stiff anti roll bars... etc contributed to the poor lap on wet track cos it couldnt get any grip.... but thats how i requested my car to be set up... we lost a lot of times in the corners as you can see by the poor apex speed :) but thats a given considering how little grip the car had :)

Warren luff had several moments where the car over steered and wanted to swap ends... but thats to be expected on a super wet track.. in the dry it works perfect because it was set up to dial out understeer... on a wet track you want a naturally understeering car... its more manageable

also i suspect the my software tune was playing up.... if the power figures are anything to go by im down quite a few kilowatts... so that could have been a factor..and as for braking....

i think i know why.... my rears are bog standard.. where as the fronts are modified.. hence... when you brake really hard the car tends to wiggle around cos of the brake bias at the front... so that could be why.. and also.... and possibly the suspension tune .. specifically the spring rate....

but theres a whole heap of ifs and scenarios... for why the car performed like it did...

getting the tune sorted out... got it booked into a hub dyno .. with computer to diagnose the car and run different software tunes on it to see if we can get it right.... as for suspension set up.. will get it sorted once i have ordered my camber kit... will get it all checked out and probably chuck on a set of eibach race springs

Hey Robby, I tend to agree regarding the imbalance of the front BBK and the stock calipers at the rear. Its common when pushed hard(on the track more than the road) that your brakes lock up because the front and the rear dont match up. The effects of the lock up is what you said, the car would wiggle a bit, especially on a wet also. If you track your car regularly and I know you do, best get the rear matched up too. Maybe go 4-pot at the rear baby.

I noticed this in my old Viggen where I had 4pot in the front and my rears where single(stock). As soon as I went 2-pot on the rear, the brake lock disappeared. Is'nt it what they said, go 2 less on the rear than your fronts. I cant remember now.

Jose do you have matching rears?? can you give me info in your rear brakes? I am looking at matching the rear calipers now with bigger brakes at the back

let me know thanks

Hi Rob: I still have stock rears and I thought long and hard about this even way before I got my BBK. I simply just dont need it because its a street, daily driver kind of a car. But I am pretty sure that if I track my car, the rear's will be upgraded to 4-pot. My front is 6-pot at the moment so if I apply the rule of -2 that should balance out the braking capacity. I also learned, and this probably goes without saying that if you are drilled in the front, better get drilled at the rear also. Different bite characteristics the drilled and slotted so best to get the same. They also dont make BBK's for the R32 for the rear so more than likely it will have to be a custom job. I know for a fact that MOVIT from Germany or was it Italy, cant remember, only do custom BBKs compared to say APRacing or Brembo were they do BBKs for most high performance marques. I am sure your guy at VSport can match up the rears for you. They know their brakes.

yeh spoke to john about it mate... its a custom engineering jobbie... looking at 5-6k ... so need to think long and hard.

also looking to see whats available in the VAG stable that I could buy and reuse. eg if the RS6, RS4 have bigger rear rotors and calipers. The carriers should be the same one would think

Have a look to see if some of the UK GTI forum links / brake people are helpful as they seem to look for the VAG mix and match of parts, plus use of Boxster/Cayman calipers.
Hopefully there is a VAG solution for larger rears.

I went up a size (stock -> GTI) and believe I have a crisper response.

perhaps you guys could investigate some sort of adjustable brake proportioning valve. Would allow you to modify the brake bias a touch.

Electronic brake distribution would negate any such apparatus.

that would possibly depend on how the EBD system works on the Golf. If its just a reactive system that only works in conjunction with a triggered ABS or ESP then maybe not.

City Performance can make you a upgraded rear brake setup like my R32. I run RS4/RS6 rear calipers and rotors that are 335mm x 22mm. It requires some custom brackets so they aren't a straight bolt on!

Nice solution, AP! I should link this to the BBK thread as it has a good OEM aspect to it and proven parts and people.
Which generation RS, AP, since there are some significant differences B6/B7/B8 from my reading of various stories. It seems to be a solid, quality option.
Are you happy with it?

Do these rears have the two-piece calipers (e.g. the mini me second caliper for the handbrake, insted of a mini drum)?

I just read this issue early tonight and lurve the Scirocco! The Rennenhaus 118TSI is nice as a handling-mod car and all of the other VAG cars - wow, you don't hold back! :D Very nice package.

A very good mix of approaches. The APR R getting $5 short of $35k mods is memorable, as is its power!

Scirocco still wins in performance and wow factor- well done, City Performance. :D
Whose Scirocco is the CW one in their ad? A CP customer?

Well you have a twin evil brother for the R32 :)

Tuners for japanese cars are:

TMR: Subaru STI, Evo X
Tunehouse: Subaru STI
MRT: Evo X, Liberty GT

Tuners for Euro cars:

Rennenhaus: Golf TSI
APR: Golf R, Golf GTI
Peak: Audi S3
Evolve: BMW 135i
Scuderia Imports: Scirocco

I highly recommend to buy this magazine, it's really good info for those ones asking who's the best tuner?,

Cheers!

TT guys - hope you all got as many copies of the mag as you wanted! :D It's the least the mag could do - especially if the 'testers' trashed your car.
At very least, I'd expect the Tuners to get a lot of copies seeing as they would also be hit up for some fullpage ads to sell their touted wares.

To me, this issue is a brochure for several tuners and several VWs. :p

Hey Robby,

Nice car man! I love it! You may want to talk to Pierre he has an S3 with a competitor tune it may be worth comparing cars/performance to see whether it is the tune or is it just the suspension setup etc.
