I'm not sure if this is an artistic photo, however I'll post it here as I'm not sure where else to post it.
Something I just did up, not enough photos to make it really nice, but maybe I'll get some more and give it another go. Most of them are Mk6 GTIs, a few randoms in there of wheels etc. Not too bad for a first attempt though me thinks.

Yep working on that have 160 at the moment want at least 200 which is hard to find as the mk6 photos just tend to repeat themselves on the web after a while. Once I have enough I'll give it another stab :)

lol Tendy, not really, just worked out how to do it properly, piece of cake now, been playing with different ones for the last 15 mins and have made 2 or 3, pretty cool though hey?
Got something else I'm going to try tonight that actually requires some skill in PS, so I'll be following the tutorial I found. If it turns out well I'll post it up when finished, fingers crossed it works out well.
nath_mk6
20-03-2010, 08:50 PM
So I finished the new thing I was trying, not really happy with how it came out but thought I'd post it anyway. The idea is using a negative mask to create shadows and midtones of grey and black into words, applied a gradient to the scheme to see what it looked like. It didn't turn out like I had hoped but then again its a case of trial and error for me at the moment.

Did you HDR the image aswell??? the halo effect on the ground actually really suits this shot and the light hasnt blown out to much... great effort...
when you edit as good as that, you will be fine... i need practise mate... cant wait to get stuck into it again once i have moved and finished revos... i spent 27hours over the last 2 days on scaffolding painting my new houses ceiling.. i cant wait to get my camera out again!!!!!

thanks, didnt take the shot though so wish I had your eye. I didnt HDR, whoever took the shot did I think, the original is very nice just wanted to see what it could be in B&W, those clouds and the sun breaking through mid left made me want to B&W it.
my editing skills are pretty basic at the moment, about 15-20hrs behind the screen since I got it 2 odd weeks ago, so I have a long way to go before I'm in JCs editing realm, and even more to reach your framing and shooting skills, one day...
for me I baby sit my son friday and saturday nights whilst my wife is at work, so when he goes down I have plenty of time to play with stuff on the PC :)

No problems Frenchie, was just giving an HDR a go :)
Just learning how to use the manual mode on the camera setting the ISO etc, this just happened to be mixed in with some truly shocking shots! I've also only just started shooting in RAW (with the backup Jpeg aswell) on suggestion of a friend, so my memory card is filling up quick!
Just for you Frenchie here's the untouched original

I think it's just me and HDR don't go well together, esp with nature shots. Sometimes less is more.
But don't make me stop you, you have already improved a lot.
Great to see you develop a taste for photography.

Okay so I went to Cronulla in the wee hours today and took some photos, the Car shots are a mess, but I will play with them and see what I can salvage. I mostly took 'nature' shots whilst down there and spent a good 3 hours wandering around. Here is a selection of the better photos, mostly raw images fixes have mostly been around reducing exposure, got to love shooting in RAW.

First attempt at a shot like this, not 100% with it as the flare top right needs fixing, and turns out the lens had salt residue from the surf hence the speckles. Any idea how to fix?

A warning though they arent cheap, the price was a shock, but its aluminium and has a 3 yr warranty and unlike the cheapos when you lock it, it stays where you want it >D
By the way Benough, nice shots!
Mt. Kilimanjaro looks like a nice backdrop for a decent photo.
My Shuffles Senior up front looks like he spends a bit of time trudging through the swamp land all day.

The only issue with that is with Digital photography, the technology improves every two years.
And sensors wear out.
Film was much better in this regard. I am still using film equipment that is older than me.

OK. Thought I had found a great location (couldn't park in middle of the street and lucky I didn't as a car went by). But, lucky that car did go by, look what happened. Pity I didn't have another light source to light up the foreground where my car was sitting for more detail. The aim was to try to get the trees with the lit up leaves.

Really cool shot, I agree shame about the car being so dark because those lights are awesome looking :)
Just need to find some time to head out and do this sort of shooting, Brighton-Le-Sands here in Sydney offers some good car shot oppotunities with the overpasses and such.
Well done Pharkus
Or I need to get the front exposure right then get a mate to drive by =) Thanks Nath, still trying to catch up to you.

the other thing to try is still do the long exposure but at the start of the exposure hit your car with a light... because the lense is open, it will catch the light but also continue to expose the drive by etc... you dont need very much at all perhaps just an on/off with an LED but just experiment and itll come... trust me, try to find time and then practice practice practice... this is where i fail, finding time to get out is hard as i typically work 12-14 hour days.....

where would one get an LED from Byza and what do you need to look for?
on a related note I just purchsed a UV filter and a set of ND filters so that will be some fun when they come >D

mate they are like 9.99 at every local servo!!!! not great quality but does the job... its a small investment but essential if you get into night stuff, you NEED a torch.. i am going to buy a head lamp LOL will look stupid i know but frees your hands...
ND filter is good... i need to get one.. ill probably try and get an 800 so you can get longer exposures during the day to get cloud movement etc... UV wont do much but will protect you lense but ND will be fun...
nath. one more thing, just been checking out your flickr and i have one suggestion with your panos... instead of shooting in landscape when you doing your panos, try the pano in portrait... this will give you a larger span and gives better sky and foreground... you can always crop if you need to but you need the height rather then width... just a suggestion to make your panos a little more interesting and makes the viewer feel part of the shot...
example... this is an 8 shot pano i took but shot in a portrait position giving foreground depth but also plenty of sky... its just increasing the appeal... just a thought mate...

Thanks for the tips Byza.
I have a headlamp that I wear when detailing my car (until the three double tube florescents are installed in the garage). It's an energiser LED one with 2 spot and 2 focused LED lights and also a red "night vision" function as well. Cheap from K-mart at about $40. Well cheaper than LED lenser one anyway.
So you reckon just point that at the car? Does that light then need to be kept stationary?

By the way Benough, nice shots!
Mt. Kilimanjaro looks like a nice backdrop for a decent photo.
My Shuffles Senior up front looks like he spends a bit of time trudging through the swamp land all day.
Thanks yo. Yeah we actually had that elephant get all pissed off and chase us. Kinda freaky.
I love it how you've owned a GTI before flying, best!
thanks for the feedback everyone... getting there slowly and happy to help anyone but i am still learning too...
some might not be a fan of this but here is a Halo Rainbow I shot not long ago... something different... apparently quite rare and hard to capture.. i did ok at getting it...

Nice one. You need a fast shutter and a big aperture for that kinda stuff right? I've never had much success with that kinda stuff.
Any post?

thx AP, but still learning, next thing I want to try is a proper photoshoot of some cars with lighting which is beyond my resources currently.
You need one for the Rocco and the R32, that black and white R thing is sooooo hot
