Just wanted to see what you guys paid for servicing at different intervals.

I have my 15k due tomorrow at Barloworld in Mascot.

I really want to know this too as I'm in the boat to buy a Golf (maybe), then again I've rarely serviced a car at the dealership. They HAVE to overcharge, their overheads are bigger than the mechanics I trust and use. In the end of the day I think it's more of a comforting psychological thing to get your car serviced at the dealership, than anything else.

I have only done10k so far since Oct 08

Changed my oil at 5k + OEM filter $120 @ Mechanic in Artarmon.

15k/1 year which ever come first - I think I paid $270ish for my first service at European Autotech and that include Brembo brake fluid + removal of Arqray catback.

I would never take my R to a dealer for service - only warranty work and that's because I have no choice.

True Justin hence my reason why I would NEVER take it to a VW for any service - No love !

I would only let respectable enthusiasts do any work on my car

Dealers vary in service prices so best to ring around if you decide to take your VW

I ve got a great website which compares all service cost...I will need to find it though..

apparently to keep your warranty or less hassle from the dealers in regards to warranty claims, its best to do the services at the dealership. I paid $400 for the first year/15,000kms service and all they did was change the oil and check everything :(
i don't think it'll be worth me going to them after this year because they WILL know my car is modded hard and would probably void warranty regardless.
Every 5,000kms my mate and i do the oil change ourselves which is just the cost of the oil (cheapest i got was $37 at repco) and and oil filter from dubaddiction.

Frenchie

@Paolo No need to stick to VW for services, it will NOT affect any warranty work in the future as long as OEM parts are used - excluding mods, VW can not refuse warranty work.

Sounds about right SUGA around the $400 mark, it should cost you half that.

Where in Artarmon Frenchie? I am thinking of trying somewhere closer to home (Killara) for my next service. Took it to Seb in Giraween for last one which was fine but a long way to go.

10K since October 08! OMG Frenchie! Walk away from the keyboard, grab the keys, and go for a long drive!

I get mine done by Derek & Adam at European Autotech. I can't remember what I paid, but I remember thinking it was a good price. I've usually had other stuff done at my request at the time, and I remember being more interested in those costs than the service costs.

i usually get mine done by derek and adam as well at EA, i remember my 15k was roughly $230. great service from EA all the time!

Picked up the passat from Ramspeed, everything done and seems to be running perfectly fine. All parts were geniune VW parts, but have to VW let us down as they took their time to deliver them! Missus says the brakes are more responsive as they did a brake fluid flush. Overall a very good experience from thomas and the crew down there $1573.93 was the end payment which is a tad higher than dealer service but cant beat the customised service from them. Now will have to decided where to take the R for service next (EA or Ramspeed). I'll definitely recommend ramspeed again but also EA is great too.

ps on the end of the receipt it qoutes (congratulations, you've just been serviced by the best)!

I pay $300 at my mechanic, who is an ex-Audi/Porsche mechanic. Going to an indy isn't going to void your warranty as long as you use genuine parts. The dealers will try blame his work but at the end of the day, you kick up a stink and they will do it. Been there done that, fire up and they agree.

with previous issues with my old 4wd, i had a terrible experience with my cars service dealer. On my first service they broke the radiator and they didn't tell me anything and then i realised it when my car was parked on my driveway there was a lot of water leaking and also it was overpriced. SO I WILL NEVER BUY A KOREAN CAR AGAIN!!!! absolutely disgusting. So now i am servicing my golf at vw dealer so i don't want to avoid warranty, but just be aware of consequences that's my best advice mate. :)

random
16-06-2010, 06:19 PM
you don't void you warranty going elsewhere, as long as they use parts verified by VW...

First service is only oil change... all you are paying is the stamp, oil is pretty cheap compare to what they are charging you! they do look around the car for faults as well, but nothing major... and vw can't void your warranty just because your stamp doesn't have vw symbol on it :)

FYI, 7,500km oil and filter change cost me $105 in total using the "genuine" Castrol Oil and VW Oil Filter from the VW Spare Parts counter and honestly took about 10 minutes to complete in total. These intermediate services are a definite DIY job!! I spoke to VW Service about this prior to doing the job, they confirmed that as long as genuine parts are used it will not affect warranty. There are probably other oil alternatives that will do just fine, but because I don't know what additives VW have decided the engine "must have" I decided to just stump up the extra for the Castrol variant they sell over the spare parts counter. Even with the overpriced oil it's still a huge saving.

I sincerely suggest you take it to the mechanic to get done or have another forum member assist or do it for you. It's not something you want to mess up as the oil type and levels are critical and it could be an expensive fix. In saying that it's very straightforward but you'd be better off having someone show you how to do it or continue getting it done at the dealer/mechanic.

^ what he said.
But if you're just after knowledge, there's a sump plug under the engine. Undo that, the old oil will drain out. Make sure you have a oil pan or bottle ready to put the used oil in. and disposed properly. Once all the oil is drained out, refit the sump plug, and pour the same (or little bit more) amount of oil back into the engine via the opening of the '710' cap. :) Just make sure you put in the correct amount. and you're good to go.

Oil filters, if you're changing the oil change you might as well change the oil filter. Not necessary but neither is a oil change at 7500km. If you're using different oils then best change the oil filter at the same time.

Guys, My car has done nearly 105 000, and I think the timing belt will require replacing soon, as it is a bit squeaky, although its somethign that is done at 120 000. I will also change the water pump, as its somethign you may as well do at the same time.

Just wondering how much the parts will cost? Because I just found this on ECS, http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Golf_V--2.0T/Search/Timing_Belt/ES1884412/ which has the belt, pulley and waterpump, and its quite cheap. So maybe get that then just pay labour at a VW specialist?

Look up your local TAFE college...find out if they do courses for basic car maintenance at home. Enrol. Once you've done the course, then do it yourself. In the meantime, find a qualified mechanic.

My 75000km service was around $430 at Southern Classic in Wollongong.
Problem for me is closest VW dealer's are Wollongong or Mossvale. Which are both 2 hours away.

There is a VW opening in Nowra but I think its apart of the ford dealership, until I find out who will be doing the work I'm not taking my car there.
We've taken previous Ford's in there and they've been totally crap with their workmanship. I have a feeling they'll be sharing the same workshop though...

My 90,000 will be coming up within the next couple of months.

So they're getting along with the new VW dealer in Nowra. Their site is up and running and they have phone numbers etc.

I enquired about service costs for my 90,000kms and the GT Sport's 30,000km service. I was pleasantly surprised. I think these prices are quite good?
GTI 90,000km - $310 + $35 for pollen filter if needed
GT Sport 30,000kms - $295 plus pollen filter if needed

I'll be popping in on Friday to have a chat when my car goes in for its pink slip, but so far so good. I'm really hoping it will be a good workshop!
Its a nice change because its only about a 10-15min walk to work, as opposed to having to take a day off to take the car to Wollongong etc.

Hi saad.
I was quoted by cityperformance to do timing-belt change + water pump for around $900. It may require up to 2 working days also.

wow thats cheap! Quote from VW dealer here was $2200 all up!

$1430 for just the timing belt change and no water pump

each of 2 tensioning rollers are $225. I think I might get the kit from ECS and just pay labour. Much cheaper that way.

I figured having the major service done will appeal to buyers of my car.

45000km Service done at Southern Classic Cars = $319.50

I supplied my own Castrol Edge 5w 30 and I did the pollen filter myself which cost $28 for a genuine VW filter which was actually cheaper than the Ryco equivalent.

I would have done the air filter myself but I couldn't get the fcuking engine cover off. I think they charged me $58 for the air filter. I now know how to get the engine cover off and have done so to check my pcv. Easy when you know how.

Next service for me is 60,000km and they have to change the DSG oil and filter and spark plugs I believe. Not looking forward to receiving the bill for that.

45000km service as per schedule = $144.30
Emission Service (WTF) = $41.00
Fuel Additive, oil flush
Lifter free (WTF again) = $20

Oil Filter = $28.80
Sump plug washer = $3.50
Air Cleaner Element = $52.84

Net = $290.44 + Gst
$ 29.04

Total =$319.50

Cost $430 roughly.

I suspect they're at it...
Went and had a chat with the Kinghorn VW guys this morning and they've confirmed my 90,000km service will be $310 and that includes oil + everything.
Its also basically exactly the same service as the 75k I believe. And best of all, they have parking!! In Wollongong at SCC parking is so friggin scarce.

I can do all pads, rotors, fit new lines & flush/bleed system myself in under 2 hours total. No hoist or other fancy stuff. You can JUST get away with 500mL fluid but 1L should cover it with plenty in reserve. Personally recommend Motul RBF600 fluid [@ ~$28/500mL]. Therefore fluid cost <$60 plus maybe 30-60 mins labour since they won't be doing lines.

Sounds about right, I was quoted $630 or something like that for my 2nd service on the 118TSI (Goes in Friday at Mascot)

It's expensive compared to an independent but given the problems that can surface on VW's I prefer to take my car to the dealer. Then I can harass them about silly things that need fixing under warranty at the same time.

A few go bang out of however many thousands sold and they're suddenly a potential nightmare? I suppose everybody with a DSG gearbox should have serious thoughts about selling too then.

If it dies that's what warranty is for. Mine has been fine for the last 2yrs so I'm not going to have a fire sale just because I read a few horror stories on the internet. Until something actually happens I'll do nothing other than enjoy the car and drive it how it's meant to be driven.

Do any of the non-dealership mechanics specialising in Volkswagen receive the software updates and service bulletins from Volkswagen as well? Or do they only do the other usual mechanical items?

RamSpeed
05-09-2011, 10:36 PM
Yes, service bulletins are available for shops which do have genuine diagnostics equipment. To my knowledge there is only one company which supplies this equipment in Australia (Autologic)

http://www.prestigediagnostics.com.au/vag.htm

This is a genuine tool used by dealers in Europe and available in Australia under certain 'freedom of information' laws in EU. Call them if you need to know more, but the life of a non genuine repairer is not made easy by our local laws.

Yeah when I picked up my car from Barloworld GW the guy was giving me an indicative cost for the service schedules. He said to expect close to $2k for the 60k service.. I told him he's dreaming.. me old man was with me and started arguing with the bloke the moment he said it LOL.

I don't mind paying if the cost is consistent across dealers. All I care about is when I go pick it up there is not a massive (8kms last time) amount of km's put on the car. Call me a bit paranoid, but I don't see why they would need to do that many km's for a service run. Also, that they park the car undercover and do NOT wash it.

Camera will be coming along with me tomorrow to document prior to drop off.

*sigh really shouldn't have picked up my Eames chair last weekend, bad timing on my part. But at least I have already fallen asleep in it.

I usually wait until a deal comes up like this one (http://www.groupon.com.au/deals/brisbane/-mercury-motorsport-/715862140), because even though I'd love to do my servicing at the dealer, since I went back to University I've just had to watch my budget a lot more.

29-08-08 15,471km
07-08-09 32,299km
06-10-10 36,103km

What do you think my next service should be?

It will be in the next few weeks, and km will be approx 50,000. I'm guessing the normal service +2yr (brake fluid) +4yr (air filter, spark plugs, haldex filters)?

Spark plugs, dsg, haldex all done at 60000 iam pretty sure.

Even though vw long interval service says 15,000 depending on how u drive it (short trips....) i would get at least my engine oil done every 10,000.

Also before you have it serviced ask them specifically whats included in the costs put on paper.
As I presumed brake fluid as well for my 60,000 which the service guy said would be done but after the service i discovered it wasn't done but had no leverage with the service manager as it wasnt on paper.

Says who? People that know, will appreciate if a car is serviced at a known independent, otherwise do the math. Stealers r at least twice if not more than an indep workshop. Over say 5 services (75k km), it will cost say $2k more in servicing costs alone. Will u lose $2k in resale. I doubt it very much. So please do the sums if u think people value stealers over indep mechanics

walbjj
15-01-2012, 10:26 PM
thats cool if people look for those things. me personally, if i was buying a car, i ask who serviced it, if they say derek at european autotech, then ill give derek a call and ask. if its a jap car, and they say indy at is motorsport, ill give indy a call.
i understand that sometimes people dont know specific workshops, and thats all part of the game, but fortunately i do know some of them and ive been lucky to buy cars that have been serviced and worked on by them, so i feel confident that their work is better than a 2nd year apprentice.
also, factory service is no guarantee of buying a shitbox, even if they took it to a dealer, they can still negelect the car in between services. its like some guy drinking and eating shit for years and then seeing a doc cos their chest hurts. sure they r getting medical treatment, but maintenance is always the best bet

@Paolo No need to stick to VW for services, it will NOT affect any warranty work in the future as long as OEM parts are used - excluding mods, VW can not refuse warranty work.

Sounds about right SUGA around the $400 mark, it should cost you half that.

i know its 2years later frenchie but i want to start getting mods to my car what can i do without getting my warranty voided ? i just want ecu and exhaust ?

Not being rude and this isn't obviously everyone just a broad statement...

But i genuinely can't believe how some people are so worried about 10-30 even 40 difference on their servicing cost.

You'd be surprised what some places would check vs others and that alone is worth the extra $$ at a specialist. And you pay for a service and a relationship between you and the guys you use. If you are after cheap and nasty, go find your cheapest priced service centre and stick to it and be a royal tight ass because you genuinely belong in an echo or on a postie bike if you are that worried about saving a few dollars!

Your car doesnt need some "NASA based" high grade oil, it only needs what the manufacturer uses. You don't track your car non stop and do an oil change after every track day or even monthly for that matter. The VAG R&D team i am sure has worked out the right oil for the car and seems to work for the other 40014398509183450981430598340198510349850394853804 9 trillion golfs/a3's and other VAG cars in the world! (lucas r, this isnt to you.. fyi lol)

Luckily i do my servicing myself, and if i do get lazy i will pass it over to Arthur and whatever the total of the bill is well it is that as i have a lot of trust in the guys @ Exoticars (http://www.exoticars.com.au)and they always check my car very thoroughly every time it goes in for ANYTHING (which mind you its back for a restrictor to be removed lol) and i am happy to pay for their services at the end of the day.

Going to receive some banter and what not after this.. But all i can say is you spent HOW much on your car, and you are worried of a few varied 20-30 $$. Don't get me wrong, we are all internet pricing wh0ring searchers for the cheapest possible parts. I am all about saving money but we don't drive a lada niva now do we. (which no offense to Lada Niva's as their cool!)

However you really should base your Servicing Experience on either a) Service Centre - in and out, hello goodbye stamp thank you. or b) a Service Centre & Relationship with someone who does take care of you and thoroughly checks your car, or c) any knob who will take your $$ sign your book and just change the oil and filter to save you some $$.

Also take note, someone in say Sydney CBD will charge you a little more as he may have more overheads vs someone who may be out like Campbelltown. Take a small business into account vs a dealership, support a small local business as they support our economy and YOU. :)

^ regarding Fuzions comment above - I agree with many if not all of the points he raised. But, here in Newcastle, we have no where near the choice of specialist service centres that people in Sydney / Melbourne etc have. We have Newcastle VW (who are useless therefore I won't use them), a place called European Car Centre which I've heard both good and bad reports about, and Newcastle Audi.

I chose Audi for several reasons - because my brother works there, I know quite a few of the staff members including the service manager and business owner, I know quite a few other VW's and Skoda's get serviced there - the fact that my service was a good price (trade price) was just a bonus. I talked to the service manager for 10-15mins after paying my bill and felt quite comfortable and happy with him etc.

The reason I provided my own oil is so that I know exactly what has gone into my engine. I don't need to worry about mechanics accidentally pumping oil out of the wrong drum (I used to work at a car dealership and it happens - believe me). The added bonus of this is that in most cases, the high quality oil you buy for circa $80, will be cheaper than the price per litre that the service centre would charge you for whatever oil they use.

If anyone from Newcastle is reading this, then I suggest you consider Audi for your servicing.

But Fuzion is right. Saving money is fine. I'm poor as. But getting the right kind of quality service is important.
