Hey All,

How about a short review?
Cheers,
Nice one Sam!
So what was your impression of the car? How did it drive? Power? Sound? Handle?

Ok guys, being lazy and just gonna paste what I wrote else where but since this is the new home, why not..
Power - Amazing!wooow. Smooth and no turbo lag wat so ever. So much more power…
Inside - Exactly the same as the MK5 R32 except the dials...See photos
Drive - Smother than the MK5 R32, tried the sports mode and felt nice but then again NZ’s roads are so much better that Australia so maybe it was that!
Sound - Not bad, no V6 so a bit sad, but the power kept me occupied. There is a bit of a pop when changing the gears which is a nice touch.
Exterior - you be the judge but the front looks hot!
To move from MK5 R32 to this, not sure and not quite convinced. I mean with that amount of power, you’re asking for trouble for sure! But personally, my next car has to be a bigger step than to the new R and don’t feel like it is that much of a bigger step. Inside, you feel like you’re in the same car.
Also, I have tested the S3 before buying my R32 and the new R is different in a good way, maybe it's just the VW touch.
Nice Sammy,
Can't wait to test one myself.

Nice pics Sam! Good to see some pics of it in the wild! How much can you pick one up for over there? NZ dollars?

Paolo, I personally did not notice it much at all but I am having not owned any turbo cars before. The power was overwhelming so maybe it was that that overcame any of it. Not sure if I am making sense!
It was going for NZ$71,990.
NZ does not have tax\on road costs.
Hope it gets here soon so you guys can have a go.
I really think if you go from other cars to the golf R, you would love it but not sure about going from the MKV R32.

Here is another hottie!

That was something else but did not get to test drive it. The Sirocco (R is not available in NZ yet) will have exactly the same engine as the R bit FWD. The thing that may drive people to buying it over the R is the interior and looks. It's something different. Inside is very sporty and felt much different from my R32 and the R

It would almost be worth flying over to test drive one, instead of going another 6 months speculating about it like everyone on VWWC.

Oh man that Scirroco - yes please !! Love the shape and look..
Are we sure we are not getting the Scirroco in Aus !?
Nice short review Sammy...I will def be testing this R20 - no matter how fast it is I will never trade my R32 for R20 but if we were to have Scirroco R then ummmm just maybe...

Yo Sammy!!!
PS: Love how turbo never fails to impress someone who has never driven a turbo.

I've heard that Aus might be getting the Scirroco but we're only getting the R, which would be fine by me :D
I will definitely be testing the Golf R when it is here in Aus but for the dollars VW will want for it, it's not going to be a good enough deal to make me part with the MK6 GTI..or so I think.

Haha, I have a close mate who works as a car journalist and he mentioned it to me when I was looking round at the new GTI. I think the Golf R pricing will be $65,000 before on roads etc are added. Xenons will most likely be standard but if you want the unreal Recaro's which come on, we all know we want, and sat nav (seems silly to have a car in this price range with out it) then you're well over the $70,000 mark. I would have waited but I've also heard that Europe has over 100 Golf R's on back-order at the moment which means they all have to be fulfilled before Australia sees stock so to avoid lengthy delays I bought the GTI. That being said, with a little over a month to go till I get my GTI, I'm dying!!!

Yeah that is big $$ - straight into S3 territory
Nice - bet the wait is killing you !!
I remmember waiting 4 months to have my car delivered ! I was even tracking via satelite :)
In the end the wait made me really appreciate my R..
Thanks for the write up Sammy.
Nice pics and vid!

Still hard to know isn't it.. Thought the Golf R would be cheaper than the R32 but once you add Bi-Xenons it would be the same. Would have thought leather and bi-xenons would be standard but may not be.
No point if it's too expensive as you'd get an S3 or stick to the GTI (IMO).
The wait will be worth it for your GTI! Can't believe the R's may not be out till August, that's ages away.
Scirocco R would be a bit better and more unique, hopefully we get it!

Very nice.
The climate controls look overly fussy, but I guess they have to be seen to evolve ;)

No leather standard from what I've seen...
The leather will be an option and then the Recaro's an option on top of that. Or maybe the leather option will just be the Recaro's...who knows? The Bi-Xenons will be standard though.
Struggling with the wait for the new GTI! It will be worth it though...the damn options are what have pushed the wait out. Once I have it I'll be keen to go for a cruise with you guys :D

Surely someone else with a MKV GTI wants to sell up (to me, cheap) and step up to a MKVI GTI or R?! :O

Just noticed this - thanks for the pic and brief comments.
I am quite sure I want to take the R over the GTI but I just cannot handle the August + wait time when my almost fully options GTI is due to arrive May 5th.
Been waiting since December so far. :(

wow 70K+ for a Golf R... not really worth it. i would be utterly angry if the sirocco does hit australia, because those are really nice cars, and bought a pirelli because they said sirocco won't be coming to australia.
Golf R would be great to drive without a doubt, but definitely overpriced, as the S3 is around 80k, 135i is around 80-90k BUT the s3 is not that pretty either compared to R and it is old. Anyways will definitely go for a test drive to see how it goes, when i go over to the uk mid year, what i want to do is take the sirocco and golf R out for a spin (with my mate as he has uk license)

70k NZD = ~54k AUD ;).

nothing beats the mkv phenomenon. not even more kw and better haldex. i think sammy has been fooled by the turbo effect. i'm sure the golf R throws you more into your seat at the top end but overall don't see much different in performance. what we really need is a road test/challenge comparison between the new Golf R and the R32. i suspect the reason there is a lack of such a comparison is that there are no big gains for the R (apart from cheaper mods to improve performance).

I think more like 54$K AUD + options etc = close to 70K

Yeah stock for stock may not be much different, I wouldn't mind a turbo car again though for the obvious gains when retuned, and as much as ~250awkw with the Stage 3 APR kit if you want to go all the way.
Just got a bit bored with the N/A linear power (low down torque was pretty good though). The interior improvements are nice and hopefully less rattles.. the MK5 still a special car and not too much wrong with it!
It's a good looking car but that Scirocco is SEXY.........

That's what I think too - may be more fun to drive as the weight of AWD takes some of the shine off.
