Autotech High Volume Fuel Pump Upgrade
After waiting for approximately 3 months my GIAC software for a HPFP (K03) arrived from the US. There was no HPFP GIAC map previous to this in Australia. Only US cars had the flash or you incorporated with a K04 Extreme tune upgrade/Pirelli. Thanks Lucas for persisting and chasing it for me! I think I am the first with this GIAC tune so fingers crossed!
So it was off the see Arthur at Exoticars early in the morning. As always his workshop is full of exotics..
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4068/4649647522_a36d9e805b_b.jpg
After the reading the instructions and lack of mechanical aptitude I thought it best for a professional to do the install.
Once you remove the engine cover the Fuel pump is easily accessible.

New Autotech HPFP. Doesn't look like much and an expensive little sucker. It also came with a huge one page disclaimer on that headlined with 'Important Notice and preventative notice.."
"..Autotech cannot guarantee that your camshaft’s fuel pump lobe will not experience increased wear leading to a catastrophic
failure. All customers who choose to use Autotech’s high volume fuel pump must accept the additional risk of camshaft failure."

Inspection of the old Cam follower. You can see the signs of wear at the top of the follower.
'The new kit is designed to provide up to 50% greater fuel volume than the standard factory
fuel pump. In order to drive this additional fuel volume under the basic laws of physics it will take up to 50% proportionally more pressure to drive the pump. The pump is driven by a lobe on the factory intake camshaft which in turn drives the fuel pump piston through a follower. The pressure exerted on the cam lobe can be up to 50% greater than the standard application.'
I will need to inspect this fellow a bit more often now. You guys out there with tuned engines should check this regularly! Plenty of camshaft failures out there due to the failure of this little part that cost $80. I took no chances and replaced mine.

Initial Feedback
Car feels great although it will take another 100kms for the new tune to adjust. Feels more responsive and much better mid range that everyone told me to expect. Bum meter tells me that the car feels more powerful but this upgrade is not suppose to deliver extra killer wasps. Perhaps the other components installed working better? Need to get on a DYNO! I will report back on fuel consumption!

Phase 1 Sound System Build Complete
Got the car back late last night with front components installed, amps, Bit One and a temporary sub box. A lot of guys rave on about FHRX and now I know why. Marty knows his stuff and his attention to detail even surprised someone as pedantic as me. He actuall drove me nuts in the end with all the science involved. Its always a bit nerve wrecking seeing your car pulled apart from front to back with wires hanging out all over the place.
Well gone are the days where you could wire a pair of 6 x 9's and 6 band graphic equalizer in a few hours. Now I am showing my age :-) Here are some build photos sorry they are a bit boring as car is not finished.

Ah it was your golf that needed the coding. Fhrx is the best
Awesome work on the stereo - should sound awesome! In regards to weight, dynamat doesnt actually weigh that much, unless you do the WHOLE car!
Amps can weigh a fair bit (my 2 JLs weigh a ton, but thats why I'm jsut getting a single 5 channel class D), but you wont really notice much of a difference at all
Edit: Actually my amps only weight 10kgs - which is not much at all. Add maybe half a kilo for the MDF they sit on, and 3kgs (if that) of dynamat! The HD900/5 only weighs 4-5kgs :)

I just weighed my Arc mini amps and come in pretty light at 1.5kg each (got two). I didn't get them for that reason though, but they are small and can put them anywhere (will both be going under the passenger seat).
I couldnt tell the difference when i temporarily removed the spare, the tools and the rear seat bottom besides loud road noise.
No need to get too carried away with dynamat, I didn't even have any beside a bit behind the midbass. Most people just go crazy with it, but it's mostly the foam (tac-mat) you need to stop rattles of where the trims are touching etc.
FHRX do seem to do things properly, great getting the photos too.

Dyno Result
As most of you are aware Justin, Tendy and I recently got our cars on the rollers to see what our cars were pushing out. I was curious as I have never had the car measured before. I recently had the car flashed with a new GIAC map incorporating a HPFP. Prior to this the car was flashed with GIAC's standard flash incorporating a CAI and TBE. I am a bit annoyed I didn't measure the car stock to see what my base power was and the gains I got. Just to clarify and to eliminate any confusion GAIC do not sell their products by way of Stages so I am not sure how you would compare this tune with other brands that go down the route. As far as Lucas is concerned it is the base GIAC tune with HPFP. A HPFP does not give additional power but improved midrange and to this I can concur. I now have a base to work on and I believe room for improvement.
I am a bit disappointed how power cannot be sustained post 5350rpm with the standard KO3 or Intake? It is to be expected though.

I wasnt game enough Michael I got the panel shop to do it! Its quite fiddly as you need to apply a bit of pressure. However when I was contemplating it I was told to use a glue such as Sikaflex urethane - loads of it and masking tape or clamp to hold the sucker down fow a few hours.

Been a bit quiet on the forum of late but have started on a new project this month starting with
Forge TWINtercooler
There has been much conjecture about this product in every forum you read and a bit of an overkill for a K03 particularly when you are also running an S3 intercooler. However having read hundreds of posts I decided to take the plunge and I can tell you that the biggest myth of additional lag is busted! There is no lag and the car pulls stronger mid range and fills more powerful according to the butt meter. I have a dyno appoinment to confirm this very soon and will report back. At the end of the day it serves as an efficient cooling unit for future track days.
Once again the install was done at Top One
Front end off and the unit in situ. It doesn't weigh that much and I was impressed with the welds and overall finish
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4141/4751368601_939d3619a3_b.jpg
Its a nice snug fit. You can see here the S3 intercooler piping and turbo discharge pipe.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4081/4752011620_9d02e68b1a_b.jpg
Hoses on and nearly complete - some trimming of the hoses was required (that myth was true everyone fiitingg these coolers has that issue)

Sorry for taking this off topic, so taking it off doesn't have any real detriment and just makes the brake rotors stand out more?

it doesn't do shit!! and worst of all, it lets little stones get stuck in there.
And it collects heat, causing brake to fade quicker
Looks great man. Black Stealth pocket rocket. The rear CF wing makes the car look even better.
Hey Kev,
Quick one with you twintercooler, did you find that the new horn bracket (on the drivers side) got in the way of the xenon washer jets.
That's what happened when we put mine in so we ended up using the bracket in the factory position and it all fit together... very tight squeeze for the 1.4!
The intercooler btw, looks exactly the same as the one I have on..

Hi ya Tom yes the horn needs to be reloacted slightly. You should have a got a bracket supplued with your kit? Check out my post earlier on when I put the twin cooler on.

how does it feel to be 'extreme' kevin? did you end up custom fabricating the twin take to adapt to the tune?

Hey Paolo I didnt bother with the twin take custom fabrication the tune was too specific so will leave it for now as the car feels great. I had trouble with one of my injectors so had to replace it today. Been driving under 4000 RPM for the last two weeks due to chronic misfire in the fourth cylinder. Arthur suspected an injector failure and he was right. I am very happy and relieved at the same time.
I need to take 'test drive' it somewhere now and get it on the dyno in the next few weeks after it settles.

For those that know me I have been contemplating a K04 upgrade for quite some time now. After reading countless threads and talking to countless people I finally took the plunge. All up it has taken me about 6 months setting the car up with mods to accept the new puffer before inevitably taking the plunge several months ago and purchasing a K04 kit from the US.
Impatient as I am I was at the DYNO less than a week after I got the car going properly to see the result of the exercise.
The DYNO plots below show the different stages of my engine mods from the same DYNO.
http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4126/5095858685_ed2c1e5586_b.jpg
Pre K04 my best result from my K03 was 159.2 which was a tad disappointing. I was anticipating a bit more. I had great power as you can see up to 4500 RPM or roughly 115km/h. It was quick but ran out of puff showing the limitations of the K03.
As I was already running a GIAC tune I decided to maximise the K04 by going for the ‘Extreme tune’ version of the K04 tune which was really developed for the Pirelli or ED30 in mind. This tune required a specific intake by VF engineering, HPFP, RS4 fuel pressure valve and S3 injectors.
The gains achieved post 4500 with a K04 shows why so many people go down this path. It just keeps pulling reaching peak power of 196kw at 5100 or 130km/h. I have a lost a bit of power in the lower range (around 15%) as to be expected but gained 25% above 4500 RPM.
This version of the tune is slightly ‘detuned’ as I am running stock internals. The Pirelli’s running this tune has achieved results close to 210kw! Mental! Still I am very pleased with the end result. The car is not as laggy as what I thought it would be and is really good around town.
It’s time to hit the track again to see what it can do properly.
A big thank you must go to Arthur from ‘Exoticars’ for being patient, accommodating and doing a great job. Lucas of course for supplying the tune, advice and taking my calls over the last six months.
Finally for those contemplating this upgrade – just do it!
You da man!
Great result, KeV!
