Well not quite. This is my wife's R36 and given my MKV R32 is getting the most attention lately, I figured its time I start a build on my wife's R36. The wife has said no to the HGP Turbo due to too much power for her as a daily driver car. I tend to agree. So here it goes.

2nd Modification

Brushed In-pro Chrome Side Mirrors

3rd Modification

H&R Sport Comfort Springs. Rubbing on the rear slightly so will need to do some fender stretches again. I dont think 19"s are an option for me now as I can imagine I have to do some more aggressive work on the fender which I am hesitating due to wife's car. Will see.

a crazy R32 and a cruiser R36.... perfect!

Jose, I was always under the impression that the R36 already had the HGP turbo on it? Or did you take it out? Or am I just being confused? i think i saw it on the passat gallery thread

I am really looking forward to seeing this, Jig.
Did you hand-brush the mirrors or have someone do it, either by hand or some other brushing method?

I'd like to see how such a look might go for mine. I bet if it's your project, it will look better than expected.

Work wheels - will be very interested to see these, too, since they are likely to be good and light. Would these have cleared your R32 Brembo front brakes?

Hi Stephen: The Passat R36 is a naturally aspirated V6. HGP can convert an NA R36 to a Force Induction Turbo'ed R36. Crazy engineering and solid workmanship and parts. It will increase the power to 502HP and the torque to 700Nm. HGP also has a switch that you can press to reduce the power down to 400HP but the wife still is not comfortable with it. If I had my way, I would have done this ages ago. This is how long I had to negotiate with my wife and smooth talk her into it, but unfortunately, all to no avail. This has been de-tuned for longevity as well because HGP can tune the R36 to maximum power capacity the engine can take to 550HP and 750Nm of torque. They chose not to because they want the engine to last a lot longer.

Imagine, I would have kept up with the almight Audi RS6 and E63 Station Wagons. Oh well.

Hi Bizi: You buy them polished chrome(very shiny). I then have to brush them. It came out pretty good actually. Its never going to be a perfect job like you see on the Audi S3 or the Alfa 159s but looking at it, you cant tell the difference unless you really get up to it closely. I already have the work wheels in my car. Just no pics this stage. It has an offset of +35 so whilst the BBK may fit, the wheels may not necessarily fit the R32.

I also have the in.pro mirrors as they come from the reseller (chromed ABS) but figured you may have had them brushed by a pro.
Did you follow Robby's guide or some other source of info; or did you already know how to get the best result?

Stephen: ah. ok. got it. It may have been a photo from HGP that I shared and what my R36 engine "will" look like if HGP Turbo is installed.

Ben: its not that hard really. Just bought one of those soft green scrubbers from Coles and just scrubbed the mirrors until the brushed look started coming together. Just scrub in one direction to keep consistency. Dont scrub too hard or it will eat off the chrome and you get a bald patch on your mirrors. Slow and steady wins the race!

Would Ross' 4 day old wheels appeal in any way?
Regardless of the timing, I wonder if you like the look and could see yourself maintaining them; Ross thinks they are the only ones of their (genuine) type in Australia.

PS. Any chance of a close up of a mirror? I was just in Coles and it was hard not to go and buy the green scourer pad! :D

Thanks guys. Photoshoot of the R36's is on the cards. Just waiting for Frenchie's parts to arrive and you know Ross, everyday is a different look on his R36. Love Ross' new wheels Bizi but I am after simple designs these days. I took some photos of the mirror on the weekend. Will upload it soon for you to have a look at.

The H&R Sport Comfort Springs is arriving this week.

I have just ordered the new generation Sprint Booster as well. The R36 needs it. Oh and keep an eye on my Work Wheels Varianza T1S 18x8 ET 35 for sale on the parts section soon as well.

I have decided to paint the OE Omanyt's gloss black until I decide which wheel to get and whether I want to stay on 18"s. The drop will give me a good idea to go bigger or stay the same.

Insync or what. You got the KW V2's o V1's? I reckon V3's could be overkill for our Wagons. You got the itch back! Well done Frenchie.

Nice one Jig it will look great though I think going up a size will make the world of a difference. 18's too small for such a big car.
Not sure why European R36 have the option of 19's and we don't.
Can only put it to our roads and politics ?

Agree hence why I went with KW V2 Inox
Didn't want to bother with V3's
We're getting there Jig.

I did not know 19"s is an option in Europe. Are you doing 19x8 or 19x8.5? Will 8.5 scrub you think esp with the V2's?

stephen8512
14-09-2010, 02:44 PM
I dont think the 8.5's will scrub..... it should JUST fit, depending on how low you go. A 1 finger gap drop shouldn't rub on 8.5 width. I'd still roll the guards though.

Indeed so not sure what the fuss is here to up size wheel.

DPE only released 19x8 and 19x10 in that style of wheel.
Tempted with 10's but didn't think I would of being able to pull off at the front with some fender work.
19x9 is what I wanted If I was willing to pay an extra charge then DPE could of sourced 9'' wide barrels but was content with 19x8 spec. Intead I went with the weight reduction program.
I think these DPE's will be too sexy for the streets !! Might set up my BBS's first hehe

The DPE will be fine with my V2's, more concerned about my BBS 20x8.5 - ready for some rubbing >D

19x10 will DEF need fender work for the fronts!!! but damn that would be an awesome sight!

20x8.5's BBS's should still be fine C....will prob be more prone to rubbing than your DPE's though. did u get 20x8.5 all round?

I see it regularly, probably awaiting a pickup of someone as it parks in the same place, 5PM, Clarence St.

Nice result. This weather could actually be a good testing time, since you have AWD. :)
The three TTs/TTS plus one S in today's drive ate up OPH!

J., did the front and rear drop by the same amount, with the H&R setup? Would you expect a little more to come as it beds in?
If I'm back in time tomorrow (and weather permitting) I'll see if it's a good time for a road test.

How it is with the whole family & their stuff inside? Can you adjust it upwards to suit when you need to take all the holiday gear?

I expect it to bed in within the next 2 weeks or so. It will go down still but not that much. These are just springs so no way of increasing the height. The front always ends up higher than the rear from factory and after market springs even with c/os but the beautiful thing about c/o's is you can lower both to how you want it to be. You dont want to have too much rake in the front because that is where the engine sits so traditionally the front height is 10mm higher than the rear.

This car wont pass OPH or any spirited driving at all. Its a cruiser B, and it will remain that way. I drove the car today with the sprint booster at red, and boy this car now pulls.

The springs have settled in well. I am not getting too much fender rubbing anymore but its still there depending on the road surface. I will see what I can do to get my rear fenders sorted out. Not a big deal for daily driving. Well the wife is now driving the car with the sprint booster on RED and she has not mentioned anything. When I was a passenger and she drove the car, she revved the crap out of it to get to the left lane so that she can turn and she scared the crap out of me. She did not mention that it pulled more aggressively so I think she is ready for the HGP turbo kit with 700Nm of torque.

Jig, your household is a tuner's dream. Looking forward to your quality updates. Will you be getting a before and after dyno test of the car?

Will you have any use for the car doing towing? I'm just wondering if that's an application we see for these cars locally. Would be very nice at the local boat ramp!

Do you have a good insurance broker and/or company, with all of your tasty car mods? Obviously you would, but I am just noting you're creating some incredible VWs here. Thanks for the updates and may you both keep enjoying these drives.

Thanks Ben.

Dyno before and after definitely Bizi. After will have to wait until the kit is fully run in. The R36 is legally not permitted for towing. Its just not built that way and I have no reason to tow. My boat is moored permanently because I hate the idea of towing the car onto the boat ramp and ruin my wheels.

Funny enough, i use NRMA for all my cars. They are very good and never had problems with them. I do know some insurance brokers that are also very good BUT, very expensive. Only use them if you have a car that is so unique that NRMA or the bigger insurance companies dont want to touch.

Thanks Nath. Good question. Put it this way, never have been game to cruise too far. On a full tank(i think its close to 400Litres), I can go all the way up to Scots Island at Pittwater, then back to Sydney Fishmarkets, then nice fishing over at the edge of Hawkesbury River and still have a little over then half left. On a full load(+7) it probably would be close to half full. Its quite economical if you really think about it. Take it twice in a weekend and you'd be filling her up to the full for sure.

Nice, Jig. Maybe I'll see you sometime at Kangaroo Point or Bobbin Head. Do you ever get over to either? I figure Bobbin Head's not too bad a drive. Unfortunately I don't get to Cottage Point nor Akuna Bay too often, but either would a great motor boat marina and not too far from home. If it's on the northside, it's going to be in some idyllic waterway in the NP anyway!

I did see a WRX towing a boat when at Bobbin Head on Saturday, which was kind of funny. Seen a S3 do it too, but both were smallish boats, not the monsters you often see here.

I am not on a first name basis with My CEO. he probably doesn't know I exist. WhAt do you drive when you are the 6th richest man in the world? Pretty much anything. He drives an R8 right now. These billionaires are Not really big on cars. Boats, airplanes, real estate and winning america's cup races is where they are at. Also trying to recreate body organs and killing cancer is a nice legacy to have.

He will never race Sydney to Hobart despite him winning it back then, ever again, after so many people died at that race.

Supersprint Cat Back Installed today.

First impressions:
1. Sound - Its meatier and bassy however NO drone at all. Pheeew. On idle, you can hear the amplified tone(probably 30% louder). On acceleration, you can hear it louder as well which is what the R36 needs. Inside the cabin, you can hear the meaty sound also but once again, zero drone. Its not a raspy sound like the R32 for sure but it brings out the 3.6V6 characteristics a lot more. The satisfaction bar is around 8/10. Its 8 because I thought it was going to make the exhaust tone more raspy like the R32 but I guess the car is tuned a bit differently. Would I recommend it to all the R36 owners here, ABSOLUTELY!

2. Workmanship - Cant really fault it. Its the usual SuperSprint craftmanship. The welds could have been done better but after being spoiled with the CApristo, you cant ask the same from Supersprint considering the price is 60% cheaper than the Capristo.

3. Weight - Definitely lighter than the OEM exhaust. I would hazardly guess probably 10-15% lighter.

4. Performance - Its seem to be a general consensus that cat back systems do not add any performance gains but I am starting to believe this is a fallacy. You would be amazed on how restrictive OEM exhausts can be and you can tell from the OEM picture below. Also there is a lot to the design of the mufflers and what they fill in there to make it more free flowing. So yes, I think there are power gains and you can definitely feel it more responsive down low and on the higher rpms. If I could guess probably another 5KW at the wheel improvement on the catback alone.

I want to thank Ramspeed for ordering the system and installing it for my wife's car. Enjoy the pictures.

Nice!

I think main criteria for stock exhaust is to keep it quiet. So I would not be surprised if performance is lowered to do that.

Need some audio now! :)

OEM Audio is quite good, to my ears anyway and 100 times better than the MKV R32 stock. What I need is some coilovers because the H&R springs are too soft.

JIg! I meant the audio from exhaust, not stereo. Too old for that now lol. Jees, these 'youngens' putting exhausts on their cars talking about stereo and db's! :) HAHA.
