Evening All,
Got a mate who has just become the proud owner of some nice 18" BBS CH Black Edition rims. So he is looking at selling his OEM 18" Detroits.
They are currently on his Mk VI GTi and should be off the car by end of next week.
At this stage Expressions of Interest for offers. The Rims are in perfect condition, no gutter rash at all, they will be cleaned, waxxed and have a double coat of wheel sealant applied prior to potential new owner taking them!
This is strictly for the rims only and NO TYRES!
Will try to get some pics in the next few days...

Okay guys! Thanks for the interest, in the process of getting some individual photos of the rims and will post shortly.
Price wise, I think my friend is in the process of checking what it would cost to replace the rims, he already got the price from VW Dealer, apparently $742 per rim no rubber!!!! FAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKK!!! Thats crazy!
Anyway rest assured price wont be anywhere near that, i think they cost $1200 as an option anyway with the car so will be around that mark give or take..

It's a shame OEM wheels always go for almost nothing on the second hand market. $1200 even second hand without the tyres sounds cheap.
Considering the fact that they do cost $700+ per wheel as well as the $200+ per tyre - they're really worth so much more.
Anyone buying new and not ticking the $1200 option is nuts IMO. Such great value for money. Though some have no choice when buying 'in stock' cars I suppose.
If/When I change my wheels I doubt i'd be selling them.. What's $1000 here or there. Surely having original wheels + tyres in 100% condition is worth more come sale time.

Jay, I am with you 100% on that one, only issue is that this dude was thinking of keeping them but he has nowhere to store them...
In saying that though, yeah $1200 or there abouts is pretty cheap for these wheels but at least they will go to a good home and a forum member who will give them the respect they deserve...

Detroits are NOT worth 1200.
I don't know if i can agree that 18" are worth the 1200 option... 17" comes free, so for an extra inch you have to pay 1200? But that is life, any car brand as an "optional" extra is cost more, not necessary because that particular item is worth that much, but just because it is not standard.
They are just a box standard set of rims, nothing special about them. Some people like them because of their looks, all shiny and stuff. I find it weird to be honest the amount of people wanting those rims... they are everywhere, i would of thought IF you bought a car that didn't come with those rims, you would want to differentiate yourself and buy something different. Considering you are paying $1200 for used rims.
Ps. i still don't get the difference between denvers and detroits apart from size, they look exactly the same, and no one can tell if they are 17 or 18.
But yeah my mate sold his brand new ones (only from dealer to home) for over $2k. He said it was the easiest money he has ever made, ticking the option for 18" for 1200, and selling them straight away for 2k, he was like who the hell would want to pay for those wheels lol and i kinda agree
money could be better spent on a proper set of rims
Oh ps. if you don't have ACC the ride is pretty rough compared to 17s.

Denvers and Detroits are a little similar but there are definate differences. Detroits are more of a horse shoe look with the black inserts. As for not being able to tell if they are 17 or 18, well simple difference is the Denvers never had the Black inserts, in Europe and the US, they had the 18"s as an option for the Mk5's, they were called Huffs or Monza's in the UK, these had the grey inserts and looked very similar to the current Detroits or Monza 2's in the UK.
As far as what they are worth, well they must be worth something because people obviously like them and think they are worth paying the $$$ for them... Are they worth $1200 to you?? Maybe not...
Are they worth $1200 in general, yes definately, I mean if your mate sold them for $2000 and I have personally seen another set sell on fleebay for $1650 without tyres then the demand is there for them so people will always pay what they think they are worth. Not to mention the fact that they are certainly quite rare as well. They definately don't come up for sale all the time.
TempeTyres in sydney, just got the new Detroit Reps, they are selling them for $1799 with el crappo tyres, so factoring in that the el crappo tyres will cost you lets say $150 a corner (being generous), thats $600 for tyres making the rims $1200 for copies??? So would you rather copies or OEM's???
I personally think they are a hot looking rim espescially for an OEM rim, I also like the look of the Pirelli 18's as well, yes agree there are better rims out there, lighter and better performing rims but keep in mind a lot of people also like the OEM feel and hence these rims are the goer's...
But hey that's why this is forum, a good place to get together and actually read and find out varying tastes and opinions. >D

i dont think any oem rims are worth the money vw ask for them but that's life. $1200 is a good price but in about a year they will be worth half or less. best to save for a set of BBS.

yeah fair points.
Personally i just don't see the appeal of those rims, but i'm in the minority lol
But hey everyone is different. some mods (to me) look awesome and some mods (to me) look ridiculous (but yet people do it).

That just comes down to your own personal preference, if everyone had the same taste as each other we would all be driving exactly the same car, same, colour and same modifications.
But you got to admit, they kinda look a bit different,

lol - I cannot believe the bullshit that comes out of some of your mouths. Ridiculous.
There are plainly obvious differences between the two wheels - if you think there isn't than you are blind and stupid and simply trolling.
As for thier value, they're worth what the market will pay for them. Coming into someone's sale thread and claiming they're not worth shit is disrespectful.
At $1200 the OP is not trying to rip anyone off - it's a bloody good deal IMO. As I said earlier however, they're worth more by keeping them come resale IMO.

+1 , they are a lot nicer than the 17" denvers, anyone can see it.
$1200 is a great deal and I wouldn't sell mine that cheap. Not long ago you couldn't find any on the second hand market.
Agree bit fukn rude coming into other people's threads and saying they aren't good or not worth the money. I'd want $1800-2k if i sold mine.

$1,200 is an absolute steal and I agree with elisiX on his comments.
People will pay what they think they are worth. Or you can go to the dealership and pay the full RRP for each of the wheels. The upgrade cost of $1,200 as an option to get the 18" wheels is on the basis that the old 17" cost a certain amount. The $1,200 represents $300 additional (per wheel) that you are forking out for the upgrade for the total cost of your wheels. It doesn't mean they are only worth $1,200.

Either that or just let them realise it's not a $1,200 set of wheels from VW that you can buy from spare parts but closer to $3,000 outright buy price.

All...
Rims are no longer up for sale. It seems after reading through these posts, my friend has decided to keep the rims. In fact I have actually offered to keep them in storage for him.
Sorry guys, if anything changes i will repost.

I think that is for the best.
When it comes time to sell the car he is going to want to put the stockers back on.
Having to hunt down some 17' plain looking stock wheels (selling the BBS separately) will be annoying.
18's make the car look so much more attractive.

Hah...should have just kept quiet and bought them I reckon!
Not really useful here in Australia, but you could just have them as your winter wheels with appropriate rubber *shrug

I still havent had the chance to put the set of Detroits that i bought from Melbourne on my car yet.. Been too damn swamped with work!
I need to get my priorities in check i reckon! >D
Got a nice deal from Tempe Tyres for Conti SC3's, got quoted $280 a corner. Was thinking about those Nitto NT05's but they arent getting the best reviews for wet conditions.
May try to get it done this weekend....

Anyone know if the Reps of the Detroits that Tempe Tyres do look like the real deal? I know the pictures do on their website but would be keen to know if anyone has seen them in the flesh.

Grant... when i spoke to TempeTyres a few days ago they said they didnt have them in stock. I know though that the old Huff replica's they had were just that a replica and a good one at that too.
Jump on fleebay and have a look at the replicas on there, you may need to do a advanced search for international sellers. It will give you a good idea of what they look like. They are basically identical.

Just spoke to Tempe Tyres and they said they have some in stock. Said they could to them fitted with Pirelli tyres for $1600 delivered to WA. Only worry is that when I asked the guy the weight of the rim he said 8 kg! I'm no expert but I'm sure that's not right . He sells wheels for a living !

8kg can't be right!!! That seems very light for them. You are talking 18's?

The stock Detroit rim weighs 28lb or 14kg approximately.... seems quite light by all means and also with Pirelli tyres??? $1600 is damn cheap...
When i asked i was told $1799 with Falken tyres.

FYI, from experience, the guys at tempe, most of them have no idea about stuff like offsets, wheel weight, and so forth
seems like as long as its big, chrome and shiny, then its a-okay

exactly. what drives us to come back here and say stuff that really has very little impact on our lives. i mean can you guys live without your cars? can you live without your health. funny working in the private sector. people spend more on car tyres and servicing than they do sometimes on their health. people in general have a warped sense of priority in life. so i guess who really gives a shit what i think about EOI's or anything car for that matter.
