Just thought I start this.
The watch I currently wear is a Rolex Submariner.
Would love a Breitling Navitimer if funds permit in future
the submariner is a seriously nice watch!
i currently have a Tag Aquaracer..
http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=16697&stc=1&d=1191606757
and a Nixon Sentry as a more casual everyday watch..
http://www.normalmale.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/07/Nixon_SentryLeather.jpg
next watch on the list is a Bell & Ross BR03

Yeah Bell & Ross is on my fav list too.
Panerai is the other...
But the Breiting Navitimer is still top of the list for the next acquisition (who knows when that it)
Woo hoo. A watch thread.
Submariner is always nice. I just recently sold my Sea Dweller Deep Sea. Panerai bug will bite you hard once you got them. One will not be enough.

Hello fellow horologists!
10d why'd you sell the Deep Sea? That is my favourite out of all the Rolex's. Bit less common than a Submariner and much more imposing, due ot its larger size.
Brietling Navitimer is a bit too complicated to look at for my personal tastes. If I HAD to get one it would be the B01 (bit of marketing spin as to how it's their first in-house movement) which looks better.
Bell&Ross BR01 in Black on Black would be a great everyday watch, if you can fit it under french cuffs.
Blancpain L-Evolution http://www.blancpain.com/e/collections/l_evolution/men/alarm_watch/steel/8841_1134_53b is currently on my list to "look" at. Bit different to the run of the mill luxury brands.
However, at the top of my list of watches would probably be the Franck Muller Crazy hour with black face and red numbers.
With unlimited funds I would probably head for a minute repeater by JLC or a tourbillion. But really at those prices I think I would get more use out of a fully modded car.
Tag Heuer 'grand" carrera Calibre 17 *sigh* one day maybe

Pharkus, I friend of mine really interested, and I traded up to a different watch anyway. IMHO it is also one of the best looking Rolex, due to it's size! and Blue illumination. hmmm different.
I also have the JLC AMVOX2 DBS Limited, which is a lot less than the Tourbillon. Hahah. A friend bought the AMVOX 3 which is a tourbilllon for US $60K. Ouch!

Ouch!!! Did that come with lobster?
There's an Amvox down here at Hardy Brothers, was going for about $10k (I think cos it wasn't selling), very tempted but can't do it at the moment. What did you upgrade to?
I'm just finding it hard to find a watch with an automatic movement and a sweeping seconds hand. They seem to put that into a sub dial most of the time which means you miss out seeing what you actually paid for, THE MOVEMENT!
My experience is that buying watches here is grossly overpriced. I've been looking at a "cheap" Omega as a knock around watch and have been told that the RRP in Hong Kong is about 30-50% less than what is quoted here. That is before bargaining!!!

thats why i want the BR03. its smaller than the 01 and it looks identical!

I currently wear a TAG Heuer Link Automatic Calibre 6 that my wife bought for our wedding in 2007. I love it :D

I'm very big on my watches...currently have 2 x Tag Huer's...a Calibre 36 and a Formula (Indy 500). Pics at the below links...
Formula (Indy 500) (http://www.watchesview.com/images/uploads/tag_heuer/new_tag_heuer_formula_1/tag_heuer-new_tag_heuer_formula_1-20038-1-overwatches.jpg)
Calibre 36 (http://tevami.com/gallery/TagHeuer_calibre_36.jpg) this is very close to mine except I have the chrome dials.
Other than the above, I have Citizen Eco-Drive
Interested to see what you guys all have!
Anyone ever had one of these?
http://t2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:Wvb6M3VJcx2nkM:http://www.farfo.com/menswatches/Page2/omegaflightmaster.jpg
I was tempted to get one of these last week. Did anyone here buy the one on eGay for $1600?
Seven dials. From the small pic can you tell what it is?

Omega Flight Master???
Seems very antique like! Personally I distrust e-bay for high value items.

Pharkus, traded the Deep Sea for AP ROO. Been collecting Black watches lately. Got the IWC Top Gun, Panerai PAM28L which got the sweeping second hand you like, Graham Swordfish Black Knight, and my current fav, Tag Calibre36 RS2. Black Titanium with 1/10th sec Rotating Scale accuracy.
If anyone interested in the Bell & Ross, I know a good shop that can do good prices

I don't/won't wear a watch. I'm too devastated when they get scratched.
Although this morning I noticed Grant Denyer (Sunrise weatherman / car racer) had a watch the size of his head on his wrist.
Looked a bit weird, but it still made him look like he's ballin.
ok - carry on gents. excuse me.

Holy smoke batman! Those are definitely some very nice watches!
Thanks for the heads up on the PAM28L, I hadn't seen too many where the seconds hand is not located on a subdial at 9 o'clock. The PAM's are very distinctive in their size and shape. Pity the retailers here don't get many in. Rambo likes the PAM's.
AP ROO, never really looked into these, funny cos Arnie likes the AP range as well.
I'm still inclined towards a Franck Muller, the guilloche on the faces are something special.
Thought of trading them in for an R36 turbo build in the GTI? I'm pretty sure they could fund it.

I love watches so its probably one of the first things I check out. But you are right. Most people probably wouldn't spot anything past your usual "luxury" watch brands and know what they are looking at.
You don't need a watch nowadays with your mobile phone being able to tell the time. Therfore it's even more a luxury and appreciation of the mechanicall movement more than anything else.

So what exactly floats your swiss mechanical boat?
How vintage, obscure, complicate or rare do you want to go?
Would you go for the one best one at the top of your list, or start collecting a lot of watches, step by step?

Rolex DSSD
and a couple very nice IWC and Breitling replica's. (not the crap you usually see online)

Nice to finally have you here, Jay! I see you got the DSSD too now.
I remember I did my year 10 work experience in a Tag Heuer repair shop and i was fortunate enough to see someone fix one of those calibre 17, since it was an automatic watch the amount of minute pieces gave me a headache!! and i was'nt even the one working on it!!

Ahhh Portugese! That was one of the first watches that I really loved for the simplistic and classic styling. Power reserve indicator ++++, but then seconds sub dial at 9 o'clock WTH!!! That's why I love the DSSD, massive sweeping seconds hand that isn't attached to a chrono.

Im no watch connoisseur but I do love my current one for its simple lines and basic presentation.
If I was to buy something as a collector, or for engineering design appeal, I have to say that the Tag Heuer Monaco V4 would have to get my vote, the sheer engineering and design effort that has gone into it alone makes it something I find appealing.

Crown guard lever. That watch is a Panerai 312K and the Crown guard is a feature of Luminor models from Panerai. It's purpose is to lock the crown in place with a firm seal to prevent any water breaching. Panerai watches were first produced in conjunction with Rolex many many moons ago. Initially developed for the Italian navy. A lot of history - most of which I find fascinating. It adds so much to the experience IMO.
Also, some of those watches above are replica's. I buy and sell a lot of high end and well replicated pieces. It's a hobby more than anything.

PAM Luminor 1950 8 Days GMT is my fav out of them all, followed closely by the Rolex DSSD. The PAM just feels so much nicer on the wrist (maybe due to leather strap) than does the Roller. Nice and simple.
I see you are also a big fan of IWC as well. Did you consider the Aquatimer before buying the DSSD?

Well the pictures of the DSSD above are actually of the modified replica I had - I now own the genuine item after falling in love with it.
I've not owned an Aquatimer .. it's not in the same league as the DSSD IMO. Still a very nice line. I actually prefer the last series to the current.

I've got a replica DSSD that I'm trying out at the moment (if you can find em). Even though I love the bigger diameter watches I'm still not completely sold on the DSSD as an everyday watch. It tends to get caught under the french cuffed shirts, or any cuffs for that matter, that I wear to work. Whereas the PAM moulds a lot better.

They're both relatively big pieces but the PAM tends to sit a little more snug.
I don't wear french cuff shifts cause the scratch the bracelet of my watches :)

I question about replicas... Are they legal? If not, are they very prevalent in the market? What do the watch manufacturers do about these companies that make them?
My understanding is that they are legal so long as there is one item that is different to the original. It is then considered an homage, not a counterfeit. Of course it would depend upon the type of movement they stuff into the replica. You can usually choose between a cheap asian movement or an ETA movement. The ETA one is the same as found in most swiss watches without the modifications/quality control of most well known brands. That is my reading of the various sources around and understanding of this market.
In terms of how many are out there, it would depend on where you have recently visited and how much you trust a website to purchase one. The last time I visited Malaysia there was a market where there would be stalls upon stalls of these replica watches. Most vendors would even have official catalogues and encourage you to compare the watches. If you are not into watch collecting then upon initial inspection there are some that do look incredibly good. The Rolex DSSD is one that comes to mind, even down to the detail of the adjustable clasp. Other examples however are clearly fake and can be spotted a mile away. The major watch companies are of course trying to crack down on the practice and factories that produce these products. Last I visited the Hublot website there was a story on a raid on one such manufacturer, there is even a page that describes what you should be looking for in terms of a fake (this helps more when buying second hand or if you are on the lookout for a "good" replica).
I don't encourage this but wouldn't it be useful to take a watch with the exact dimensions for a cheap "test drive" before splashing a good $10k on it???
There out there and really there's nothing stopping these guys making more unless the real watch makers stop making their own watches. Luxury watches are now a dying breed with the digital age. There was a lapse in popularity when the quartz watch came out. Now with mobile phones, your car and electronic signs etc having the time on them, is there really a use for a good time keeping piece that you wear on your wrist??? Or do you really buy a good watch because you can afford a nice one? Or are you one of the few that appreciate the workmanship that goes into them and buy for that? For the common people, me, I think that having just one would be special enough.
@elisiX - Panerai wall clock looks awesome!!!

Nice little bunch Tendy :D That 28L is stunning.
Guys with replica's - dont kid yourself - they're fake/illegal. Simply changing 'one bit' doesn't mean a thing - still 100% fake and illegal. The difference is that there is market quality crap out there, and then there's the stuff I know about. Totally different in terms of accuracy, build, quality and replication. As for how many are in circulation - billions. Most people would not be able to tell a $50 dodgy Rolex copy to a $500 highly replicated Rolex to the genuine article. I can but i've spent the last 2 years buying and selling crap loads of reps and gens.
Let's not make this thread about reps though - lets just see your watches guys!
Ill leave you with this though. The below set of pictures are of a Breitling Super Avenger.
Ill let you guess which one is Genuine and which one is a replica with Genuine parts fitted.

Talking about reps, I had a horror story once.
Got a friend of mine to buy me a 2nd hand Rolly Submariner. When I took it to the Rolex centre in Sydney, the technician took it to have a look just to find out that it was a fake. A really good fake with a genuine Rolex movement inside (Datejust)
He said some of the really good fake were made in Italy, and the only way to tell is to check against their database of serial numbers. By right, they can smash the watch into pieces in front of you. But since I've serviced some of my watch there, he said just try to get a refund from the seller, which I did. So still lucky in that sense that my $3K didn't go to waste. Whew.
Moral of the story, don't buy watches from dodgy dealers >D

lol yup.
Look I am heavily involved in the hobby - love it. However I can see (using your example) how the 'hobby' can have a serious negative impact on people. We (the other collectors) as a group are constantly monitoring sales on ebay and the like to report any fraudulent sales of replica's as gens. Not taking the moral high ground, lol. It's just that this is a hobby, its a game, some fun to me. I dont want anyone to get ripped off.
Owning some high end genuine watches really puts in all in perspective. The Super Avenger I posted above is a good example of how close they can get. But not all are so well done. And ill let you guys know the answer now. Pictures 2, 4, 6 are of the replica. It has a genuine dial fitted. The case/watch is the third attempt by the factories to replicate the SA, this is the best yet - as you can see. The way to tell? Well the bezel finish is not quite as good as the original. This was the biggest tell on the V1 and V2, this is the V3 and as I said, much better. That's it.
Crazy! The extent these counterfeiter do!
The hardest thing for them to do is actually the leather strap. They can't get the same quality leather as the original, specially those "hump back" alligator straps on the AP.
Metal bracelet has not been a big issue for them.

The AP's are another dangerous replica. Seriously close but there is one glaring tell - ill show you one day mate :)
As for the croc's.. that's why most high end reps are made to accept genuine parts - just buy the OEM Croc.

Thanks for the clarity. I never thought that reps were really legal and for me I could never own a rep.
Because I appreciate the design and engineering of a timepiece I could therefore not buy a rep where the TRUE designers and engineers are ripped off for their craftsmanship.

I see your meaning there Howie. You always gotta pay to play with the real stuff.
It's the real complications that provide the artists with the payoff for their work in my opinion. No amount of copying should be able to replicate that sort of skill and workmanship and you really do have to pay for that.

I like how the face flat blade screws are perfectly aligned around the circumference. Some other brands don't bother and it really detracts from the finish.
Saying that, I absolutely hate flat and cross drive screws!!! They slip, shear and are just not condusive to be torqued for any real accuracy. My general faves are socket heads and torx. There are some cool security and proprietary ones but they too have their drawbacks. Mmmm fasteners are among my other strange hobbies :s

The flat blade screws on the face of the watch are actually bolts going through all the way to the back of the watch casing. They are also recessed to the bezel, so the can't be removed without doing the bottom. That's why they are so perfectly aligned.

back on topic with watches!
I'm looking for a 'sporty' chronograph with rubber/leather bands. Must be automatic mechanical movement with some exposed face or similar to show the movement (I like getting hypnotised by the marvellous movement). My budget is under $5k.
I liked the Tag Calibre 36 RS2 as it doesn't have numerals to indicate the hours but not so keen on the 1/10th measurement (superfluous) and I wanted an exposed surface to show the movement.
I like any colour as long as it's black. (or grey / titanium dark finish)...
Any suggestions?
Tag Calibre 16 RS2 would fit your budget, Howie.
Cleaner look since you're not interested in the 1/10th measurement.
Howie
15-03-2010, 08:46 AM
I knew you would say that! but I would like to see its movement. Is the budget too low to ask for something like that?
elisiX
15-03-2010, 08:57 AM
Watches which display an open movement are generally tourbillon based.
There are a few exceptions. Perhaps look at a Zenith Open.
http://www.prestigetime.com/items.php?brand=71&series=637
Within budget (second hand) and can be worn with a leather strap or bracelet.
For new ones, probably. Most mechanical black watches are made of titanium or coated stainless steel.
Bell and Ross would be the next one on my recommendation list, but it's a stretch above 5K.

You'd be pretty unlucky to get passed off a rep from an authorised dealer. I would imagine that the loss in reputation for them of selling you a rep would be far too great a loss. I usually just browse the online sites to get a feel for the price at which to start bargaining at.

Hey fellas...
Picked this one up just yesterday but it might be moving to a new home very soon (no need for 2 1950 In-House movement monsters after all).
The OEM croc on the 270 is seriously incredible and the grain on this particular strap is spectacular. One of the best i've ever seen without doubt.

I think you might be able to buy a small nation with some of those watches. Very off centre in taste for design as well, though the innovation and movements can sort of justify the novelty of not being able to immediately tell the time on some of those pieces (Urwerks). Is that an oscillating tourbillon on the Zenith?

10d, that would be a good match for your GTI.

Haha. Ben, it would cost as much as my GTI.
That would be a princely sum, considering what you've bought for it!

One day, just one day I'll have a 1959 Rolex Submariner to match my 1959 Leica.
I inherited the Leica from my grandpa and he was a bit of a Rolex guy as well.
I'd love a watch to match my Leica, there's just something special about the beautiful, functional, well engineered and purely mechanical nature of both that appeals to me.

You sir have a taste for finer things. Kudos to your grandpa for putting you on the right track. I'm a bit of a Leica nut myself. Mechanical watch goes hang in hand with mechanical camera.
I love my Leica more than the digital SLR.

Yeah, my dSLR got stolen a few years back and I've just never got round to replacing it.
There's just an indefinable je ne sais quoi about the Leica - the experience of using it, the pictures it makes - and the Rolex I think is similar.
What kind of Leica do you shoot Tendy?
Currently I have the MP (love it to death, I will never replace it) and the M8. Use to have the M6-TTL and the M7.
A lot of people said je ne sais quoi is pretentious, but I don't care. I like what I like, and don't care what others think.
I honestly think you choose you frame more carefully with the Leica.
With my DSLR I just got lazy. I haven't take any nice picture lately. Maybe it is time to buy some film and start again. :)

My thoughts are that there are a few trusted online dealers that I have read about (but would still be hesitant to try out dropping $5-$10k on a real watch). I'd always go to an authorised dealer to purchase mine, which should also provide you with a point of call for servicing of your timepiece. The quality of rep watches has gotten so good to the point that it's often hard to tell the difference between a real and a fake. Rolex is no longer spelt with two "l's".
It's often going to be cheaper going the online option, but you may find that your local dealer may be willing to bargain (target for at least 30% off the retail price as a starting point).
Read through this thread and I think ElisiX has posted some links to reputable online sites.
I recently priced up a JLC Master Compresssor extreme world chronograph.
http://www.jaeger-lecoultre.com/ao/en/watches/sport-et-complication/img/global/nullimage.gif
$21,000 RRP, but after some haggling got it down to $12,500. So there is definitely some movement in local prices out there. The other option is just to do your research and bide your time until you go overseas. I know from looking around and comparing local to Hong Kong prices that their starting RRP is at least 10-20% lower than ours, plus given our strong dollar at the moment I'm definitely going to have a good look whilst I'm over there.
Thanks, Pharkus; I monitor dealers with a longtime offline shopfront/watchmaker/dealer premises, though I mostly look at their vintage 70s chronos.
Plus occasionally visit watch forums, but haven't seriously hunted products from their FS sections.
It always amuses me to recall someone mentioning (the Urban myth?) that the world HQ for the cheapest, pawned Rolexes is the Las Vegas area. :)

Christina and Justin are in the area as well Howie!!! Not sure if you knew that, should definitely just catch up even if for lunch for our first international GTG (minus cars).
Can't be of more help for you there Howie. Rolexes you just go to Chow Thai Fook (sort of like upmarket Bevilles there and on nearly every corner). For the more luxurious brands there is a place that had about 5-6 watch shops all clustered together with the usual suspects (IWC, JLC, Graham, Breguet etc.) but my poor memory isn't working. We basically just walked most of HK last we were there and found it. There is also a few places along Nathan road near Jordan station.

Good choice
Thanks! It's my in between watch to satisfy me whilst I bank up the cash for the one that I really want (which I am still looking for the perfect watch).
Popped into the Franck Muller boutique at lunch and they had some CVSTOS there. Still a step up from the BR02 in terms of mechanical complexity, but same shape. I'd love to have a power reserve function on my watch just so that I can keep an eye on it. However the CVSTOS there also had stupid chronograph function on it relegating the seconds hand to a subdial at 9 o'clock...NOT COOL. In my opinion, it's still a waste to change the sweeping seconds hand on a beautiful automatic movement to a sub dial and have the big sweeping seconds hand remain stationary 99.99% of the time!
So basically: Richard Mille > CVSTOS > Bell & Ross BR02 in terms of price and complexity for that largish tonneau shaped sports watch.

Ahhh the dangers of old age! Can't see due to poor eyesight, then when you do get a proper look and the number isn't the serial number but the price you have a heart attack =P
You have an option for the Pro model which replaces the numerals for large dots, or the one pictured above. They are supposed to be easily legible as this is more a diving watch than anything else.

Yeah but a $20 watch doesn't come with a heart attack feature I bet. Maybe these fancy Swiss watches should have a heart rate monitor function as standard in case.
Bell & Ross: Very nice watch but does not have deep heritage as the other brands. The quality however is just phenomenal.

Agree with that comment on the B&R which is spot on Jig, and also from the many that I have now inspected in person I can say I haven't found fault with the workmanship. Of not however is that the movements for Bell & Ross watches were provided by Sinn (a German company est 1961). Since 2002 Bell & Ross have been making their own (as in putting them together, I am yet to confirm if they have an in-house movement, which I would doubt).
The other in between I was considering was the Omega Seamaster Liquidmetal. Limited run with special new scratch resistant alloy, but yet to see in the flesh and trip cannot wait. However, Omega does have that well known pedigree that Jig was referring to.
Graham I would think is just a passing fad maybe. I like the design though but they would only be the type you buy if you had squillions and wanted an out there watch.

most low lifes wouldnt know the difference between a Caltex $29.95 watch and a Panerai.
We are very lucky here in AU. In most places we can still wear flash jewelry and not be scared about being mobbed. In the country I grew up during Teens, you get killed just by wearing a nice jewelry which is why no one wears flash jewelry unless they are in their homes. Quite Sad really. My mom once had a gold necklace and mistakenly left her window half opened and someone reached into her car and grabbed her jewelry and bruised my Mom's neck severely. Luckily the car was moving slowly in traffic otherwise she would have been knifed.

NICE! I hope that you are not joking. I was just in the Franck Muller boutique here and the price was well out of my comfort zone and my CFO would not likely approve without first sacrificing my first born.
In other news, just got back from my contact at a local boutique here. Will be getting the Cartier Calibre de Cartier in stainless steel white dial black alligator in a month or two. HK ain't what it used to be for bargaining on watch prices. The mainland Chinese don't care for price and just pay full retail =(
Example was I was set on the BR02 as mentioned before, it's still on special at Hardy Brothers on Collins Street in Melbourne for about $4.2kAUD here. Over there they weren't willing to bargain below $5.5kAUD (note there were only two boutiques in HK that I could find that stocked them anyway. Apparently not that popular over there)
Here's my small collection in the order I got them:
Sinn 556, ETA 2824-2 (2007)

Nice. Did you source it locally or from the source country? I was looking at the early B&R faced Sinns.
(Tag) Heuer Carrera 1964 Re-Edition, Lemania 1873 (1999)
http://users.on.net/~whatdot/images/cs3110.png
Nicer. Similar question; is there anywhere you recommend to keep an eye on,as sourced for such a watch?
Heuer Triple Date, Valjoux 78 (~1950)
http://users.on.net/~whatdot/images/TripleDate-01.jpg
Did you get bitten by the Heuer bug? Very, very nice. I won't even ask avbout this one as I suspect it would be very hard to get at a decent price.
I see you like the old school chrono style. Did you ever consider the original Breitling Big Navitimer, re.f 816?
Not as interesting as the Heuers but I'd like your view. :) They are in the $3-4k arnage for a '67 model, I've noticed, locally, but much less from international forum sources.

Never really owned a wristwatch since I was 8 when I had one of those Casio calculator watch thingamajiggy's. So last year I decided to splash out. I don't like the current trends in watches, they're too chunky and complicated, I'm not going diving, or flying a plane, I don't need anything other than the current time.
Started reading into watch movements, horology and all the watch making houses etc... and ended up with a IWC Portugese sporting a hand wound movement.
kinda like this, but with a black face

Although, now that I've given into wearing a watch, I find myself wanting more. Been toying with the idea of getting a Cartier Santos, still unconvinced. Keeping an eye out for a vintage Heuer Monaco that's relatively cheap too. I guess a square faced watch is next on the cards.

Here's a picture of the Cartier Calibre de Cartier that I have finally decided upon.
- Design is simple, no messy additional writing on the face.
- No chronograph, doubtful if I would even use a stopwatch function.
- First fully in-house movement built calibre by Cartier.
- No COSC certification. Though I would expect it would keep time adequately enough.
- Bonus date display complication, and I like the larger window design.
- It's not as big as a 45mm in terms of diameter, however as the design doesn't incorporate a massive bezel it actually wears bigger on the wrist than on paper.
- Love the signature sapphire on the crown, part of the Cartier heritage.
- Bad sub-dial showing seconds at 6 o'clock. Wanted a large sweeping seconds hand, but on this watch it actually compliments the rest of the design in my opinion.

Nice, John. Your explanation highlights some individual features.
What alternatives (if any) were on your list?

Nice, John. Your explanation highlights some individual features.

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean - Co-Axial marketing campaign seems to make this a pretty solid choice. Let down by the design of the watch face. The normal Seamaster 300M automatic runs on the same Calibre, but is cheaper by a long shot and in my opinion the face looks way more classier. The numbering looked pretty cheap. I would have got this in orange leather band with matching orange bezel (though this would have caused it to be more of a dress/weekender than an everyday work/dress watch)
Rolex DSSD - Too big and bulky in the end to wear on the wrist day in day out. Tried it on for over a month just to see. Submariner is just too common.
JLC Master Compressor Geographic - Just a little out of reach and not really wanting to wait to save up for it.
IWC Portugese - Could have stretched for this but once again design was still a bit "old fashioned" for my liking.
B&R BR02 - As posted before, I still had doubts as to where the movement was made. Design was great and looked great on the wrist but more a weekend watch again. Size wasn't too much of an issue with the rubber strap restricting movement pretty well on the wrist.
Chopard Mille Miglia Power Reserve - Very nice car inspired design especially the power reserve representing a fuel gauge. Decided to go the Cartier for the in-house movement and overall design.
Tag - Would have only considered the Monaco LS but I just have this thing about not buying a Tag.
APROO - $$$
Franck Muller - $$$
Panerai - $$$
Budget was about $3k - $5k (I have a very friendly boutique contact, yay)

Nice. Did you source it locally or from the source country? I was looking at the early B&R faced Sinns.
I got the Sinn from Neil @ Chronomaster.co.uk - I originally looked at Watchbuys, but the $A to Pound was better at the time. I believe both sources no longer ship to Aus now that there's a local distributor (Peter @ Define Watches in Bris). Alternatively, get one from the forums.
Nicer. Similar question; is there anywhere you recommend to keep an eye on,as sourced for such a watch?
eBay, Watchuseek, Timezone, Chronotrader (http://www.chronocentric.com/forums/chronotrader/). You just need to be very careful & absolutely positive about what you're buying. As many have said, you're buying the seller, not the watch.
An original Carrera Chrono sold on eBay last week - looked great, but very wrong hands - still sold for US$2500! If the hands are wrong, what else is wrong with it...
There's much less risk in newer watches, if they've got original box/papers/receipt from an authentic source. There's also more risk in newer watches as they're more likely to be faked.
Did you get bitten by the Heuer bug? Very, very nice. I won't even ask avbout this one as I suspect it would be very hard to get at a decent price.
Yes, very bitten by the Heuer bug. Not particularly interested in the new models (except the Silverstone Re-edition, but it's Bloody Massive). I'm mainly interested now in the vintage (or re-edition) Carrera's. Ideally get a 1960's Carrera 12 3-reg chrono and a 1970's 2-reg chrono.
The Triple Date is worth a lot less than you'd expect (less than 'Jack Heuer'), because it's not a chrono, and it's a pretty odd movement (Valjoux 78) - the chrono version in the same condition would be easily double the price. It's quite small, around 36mm. It's quite rare (in that I've never seen an identical one), but that doesn't make it any more valuable.
It's currently at Tag for a service quote - I expect it to be horrendous, but just put it in to see what number they'd make up :)
I see you like the old school chrono style. Did you ever consider the original Breitling Big Navitimer, re.f 816?
Nah, not really interested in anything non-Heuer at the moment... and I prefer smaller (38-39mm) watches anyway.
Although the new Silverstone is way too big for me, I wouldn't mind the "Red One" - Limited Edition 1 of 1:
http://www.onthedash.com/pics/TAG-Heuer/SilverstoneLE/Silverstone150thRedA.jpg
It's been created for the Bonham's auction of the Haslinger collection - I imagine it'll fetch an epic price!

I got quoted US$100 just to ship it to Switzerland so they could provide an estimate for the service... I said no :P

Anything is possible Tendy, I'm just waiting for the announcement of when not if you get that watch =)
@zz2 - Nice PAM, but if I were to get a Tourbillon I would expect to be able to see the movement from the watch face. Kind of a shame to hide it.
Can anyone recommend a watchmaker in Sydney to assist me with my 1960 Omega Seamaster?
Alternatively, one in Adelaide as I'll be there three days and might get someone there experienced with these old classics.
I'd broken the leather strap, had the watch in my jeans pocket, accidentally rested a weight on that leg and managed to squash the crystal (any who knows if I've done more damage!).
Thus I'd need someone able to thorightly check/service it (it's almost 5yrs from when bought in NYC freshly serviced).
Would at least need a new plexi crystal and a service.
The watchmaker.com.au bloke now says he only bothers with Rolex. :(
Thanks,
Ben

Well I wish it had a ceramic/black buckle... but other than that - its awesome.
Pictures do not do it justice. I'll wear it out when we catch up so you can give it a whirl. :)
I dont have any suitable straps for it yet but ill find something.
I think I have a spare black PVD pre Vendome buckle if you like. Not the sewn in type too :)

Well i've got the one that came with the watch... 22mm (due to OEM tapered strap), and another at 24mm I think.
It's just that all my straps are 24mm or sewn in polished silver buckles. lol. Next time we meet bring it along anyway. :)

that is a nice watch!!
I'm looking at a new watch as well... saw one i really like the other day at bvlgari

It is a little pricey, but i had a few good weeks on the market, so i might reward myself :)

@Jay - Impressive collection of PAM's there mate. Do you even have time to cycle through them all?
@den - BVLGARI is coming up in the watches, but though it looks nice I still have the impression that they are more a jewellery specialist than a well known watch maker. The price probably reflects the precious metals used on the watch more than the movement. Still if you like the look you can't argue with that.

oh yeah lol i'm more into the look of a watch than the mechanical side of the watch... anyways, i've hunting down a few watches recently, hard to make a decision really.

Just to reiterate again, I haven't been back to my watch dealer as they didn't want to source (or even advise) as to when the next shipment of the Calibre de Cartier will be made. I was told the only one available was the one on display which they have had for some time (and no doubt handled by many people). I was going to drop a pretty penny there but they don't seem to be interested so I have put a hold on my purchase for the time being.
Take your time (excuse the pun) when looking. It's a real personal choice and you might not have the same priorities such as mechanical -> brand -> precious metals etc. I personally don't like a watch with a complicated face, but hey everyone is different. You might want to chat to 10D to see if he can hook you up with his dealer =). Maybe providing them with a price range will also allow them to recommend some watches you might not have thought about.

oh i'm a big fan of cartier. They are an absolute classic. I bought one a year ago, and absolutely love it! but it is not really an everyday watch for me, it is 100k afterall lol most on special occasions and a collectors item (investment in a way).
I did see a few cheaper cartier's which i can use for everyday, like the tank ones, which range from 5k to 25k. Or the ronde louis which are around 8-9k.
I also looked at another bvlgari one which is slightly cheaper... the classic one with the silver round front.
Other ones i could dream about are the IWC ones!! they look amazing... but i think i would get a ferrari instead for the same price as a watch lol

Even the Pilot's watch looks great. A classic look.
Anyone else considering one? I'm thinking it might be a better option than to hunt for a good Omega Flightmaster - although I occasionally get that bug back.
