Fellow members.

My 3 year car warranty (Std) will run out in June-July and I need to start planning for getting an extended warranty or maybe not.

I really don’t want to take the risk of running my car without it even tho my car has only done 25,000km (early 07 model).

I need to know WHERE and how MUCH$$ to get an extended 3 yr warranty.

I remember reading on another site of a place and ppl recomending a CS person (Sharon I think) and around the $1500.

Recommendations and your thought will be appreciated guys:)

Thanks

Sam

yes. Read the fine print. Most extended warranty are managed by Underwriters and not the Car manufacturer's themselves so they may not cover parts that you assume they would.

Thanks Frenchie. My main concern is the DSG. Touch wood, the car has been a Gem and I guess its all about how I treat the beast!

I sorted my extended warranty with Jaz and it was all a quick and hassle free exercise.

For more info have a read here:

Its important to read the fine print, as there are limitations to the cover. For example, VW will cover a part up to $2000, but any more than that and you will have to pay the balance. It goes into depth in both of these documents.

Good pickup. That's pretty dodgy, if your DSG fails, you will be having to fork out at least $1500 when you had spent $1300 on the extended warranty and that may be your only part failure..

You'll get the exact same warranty from the Business Manager at Denlo Jamil Syeed for roughly $300 less than what Jaz will do them for. Call Denlo and ask to speak to him.

Something else to consider, if you want to have your extended warranty honored in case of (say) a DSG failure, I have been advised that you have to adhere to the service specifications. Example, you can get extended warranty in a dealer, but you need to have the car serviced with them. The dealer can give you a warranty, but they will tie you to their service department for the next 3 yrs. This may not apply to all extended warranties though. :)

They will not insure:
any modification to your vehicle which altered its specification from the
manufacturer’s original specification, including but not limited to any change over to
LPG (liquid petroleum gas), turbo-charging or a change in piston size.

Does that mean most of us would not qualify for claims?

The way I see it, is that it depends what you're trying to claim.
If you try and claim warranty work for dodgy stitching on your leather seats (just using this as an example...) they can't turn around and say that they won't warrant it just because you've got an aftermarket intake and different suspension.

I think it all depends on what you try and claim and within what context (how serious the repairs are)
I suppose it also balances entirely on the dealer's disgression and how they want to handle the case. Certain dealers are shocking when it comes to warranty work and others are seemingly 'mod' friendly.

I'm still in the 3 years warranty, and I just came back from the dealer. They wouldn't warrant for the leather flaking off the steering wheel, they said it was wear and tear.
The synthetic leather flaking off after 2 years, that to me is not right...

but they have fixed my other 3 warranty issues so far, the DV, the door not opening and steering angle sensor faulty.

My factory warranty ran out today. I've contacted Southern Classic and I can take out the extended warranty with them for another 3 years or 60000km for $1500 although they quoted me $1800 initially until I said to the guy that I'd read it had been sold by them for as low as $1200.

My main concern is my DSG. Has anyone had any experience with actually making a claim with extended warranty policy ? I'd just like to know before I hand over my hard earned $$$ if it's actually worth it.

I'm not sure about the DSG issue but I'd be checking what the 'with them' actually means. The extended VW warranty is exactly that from my understanding and extension to the initial 3 yr warranty with all the protection it offers, dealers (like mine) offer an extended warranty however it only covers very minor things and from the fine print of mine (which is free if you always service with them) it wouldn't cover something like a DSG failure.

There are 3 types of warranties you can get.
- One is a Dealer specific or limited warranty. Which (as nath said) covers only basic things, so stay away from those. If you've got a limited dealer warranty its up to the dealer if they wish to cover things, which in some cases could get nasty and you've really got nowhere to run if it turns sour.

The other two are VW warranties with a few 'gotchyas' if you don't read the fine print. The VW warranties go through Allianz and VW Australia.

- The second is the VW New Vehicle Extended Warranty which you can purchase within the 3 years factory warranty and have an additional 3 years (e.g 6 years of warranty total) The policy for this is below
http://www.volkswagen.com.au/etc/medialib/vwcms/virtualmaster/en_au/service/warranties.Par.0005.File.pdf/POL271DEVW-Volkswagen%20New%20Vehicle%20Extended%20Warranty%2 0Policy%2012.07.pdf

- The third is the VW Used Car extended warranty (which is what I've got). And the User car warranty is for vehicles up to 10 years and under (or 12yrs) here are the conditions for that:

Eligibility
Eligibility to apply for Volkswagen Used Vehicle Extended Warranty Insurance is dependant
on the age of the vehicle and the number of kilometres registered on the vehicles odometer.
• 36 month or 60,000km Warranty
You can only apply for this warranty if the vehicle:
– is no more than 10 years old at the date you buy it, and
– has an odometer of less than 150,000 kilometres at the date you buy it, and
– is distributed by Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daihatsu, Daewoo, Ford, Holden, Honda
Hyundai, Kia, Mazda, Mercedes, Mitsubishi, Musso, Nissan, Proton, Skoda, Subaru,
Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Volvo.
• 12 month or 20,000km Warranty
You can only apply for this warranty if the vehicle:
– is no more than 12 years old at the date you buy it, and
– has an odometer of less than 150,000 kilometres at the date you buy it, and
– is distributed by Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Daihatsu, Daewoo, Ford, Holden, Honda

Having just used the extended used vehicle warranty on my GTI for my aircon compressor replacement, the general process was that the dealer got in touch with VW Australia to make the claim. My dealer took copies of my warranty statement, service and log book history and passed it on. Day later it was all accepted and they sent the parts down. I'm not sure exactly where Allianz come into it, but from my understanding the dealer liaises with VW Australia for extended warranty claims. Which is a good thing, if you can show that the car has had VW service history they'll be more likely to treat you fairly. This is just from my experience.

Its only the second time I've had to get parts replaced under warranty (fortunately both times were common problems). The first I had the DV/wastegate actuator replaced at Southern Classic and the aircon done down at Kinghorn. So I can confirm that the Extended VW warranty can be used at different dealers.

There is a good thread on watercooled about extended warranties.
http://www.vwwatercooled.org.au/f27/vw-extended-warranty-42475.html

For reference (I just checked my warranty invoice) I paid $1154 for my 05 manual GTI.

Assuming that the car that I'd be purchasing is out of the VW original factory warranty....

If I were to purchase a vehicle privately, could I still apply for the VW Used Car Extended Warranty?
Is it worthwhile applying for this warranty, regardless of whether i am buying privately or from a dealer?

Cam

Yes its definitely worth having.
I purchased my GTI privately and still bought the Extended Used car warranty with no hassles. As long as the car meets the criteria above (with regards to year model and kms done) you won't have any issues.
Even though our MKIV Golf is 10 years old because it only had low kms we were still able to get Extended warranty on that too.

Its well worth having, you just don't know what might go wrong. Even if its a common problem (like the aircon in earlier MKV models) I found out parts for that cost 2-3k for the compressor and various bits and pieces.
VW Australia have honoured warranty work outside of the warranty period for a lot of people as long as the car has had good service history. My dealer was telling me the other day they had a MKIV GTI which came in and needed a new aircon compressor, it was a few years out of warranty and VW Australia still replaced it for free.

As a follow up, if I were to purchase the car privately from interstate (there seems to be no good ones around here), I could still apply for the VW used car extended warranty?

Yes.
The warranty cover is Australia wide.

Update on my VW Extended Warranty.

Just got off the phone with Kim at Southern Classic. Jaz is off with a broken foot.

Anyhow, I got the extended full manufactures warranty which is through Allianz for $1320. That's for a 2007 MY08 5 door with DSG. :)

Ah thats no good with Jaz. She is really pleasant to deal with.

Glad you got it sorted David, I think thats quite a good price. Especially seeing as they supposedly went up mid way through the year.
Its nice having that peace of mind with extended warranty.

Cam, who did you buy the used car warranty through? I've spoken to Jaz (recommended on the first page) who has advised they can only sell the new vehicle extended warranty if the car is still in the factory warranty (or up to 3 months outside of it if it has full logbooks). I also rang the VW warranty line who said they can only sell the used car extended warranty if the vehicle is purchased through a dealer who sells the warranty, i.e. not privately.

I bought my used car warranty through Southern Classic Cars.
Thats correct, she told us the same thing that you can only get New Vehicle Extended warranty under factory warranty.

That doesn't sound right what they've told you, I purchased mine through southern classic cars at the start of the year and they knew I purchased the car privately and not from a dealer.
I've since had one or two things replaced under warranty and everything has checked out with no worries.

Unless their policies have changed since the start of the year?

Sorry for digging up an old thread... I bought my pirelli last year (2nd hand), it's still under factory warranty now... do i get the new car extended manufacturer's warranty or the used car warranty?

As most have mentioned already, DSG is my biggest worry, does the used car extended warranty cover DSG gearbox?
