So today Christina and headed over to Barloworld to see Peter (salesman) about a possible trade in on the Skyline...

...AND to test drive the MKVI GTI! :>

In the showroom we spotted these:

Fully optioned GTI (also in white daym!).

Interior was a nice place to be. Similar to the MKV but different. Centre console looked flatter, the window controls are up higher and they're now in your face. I also noticed a button for sports suspension. The boot was deeper too (than the MKV) and it's a lot easier to shut on the MK6 than the MK5 too.

Lovely white R36, in white too daym.

Whilst Peter was calling around to get a trade in price on the Skyline he threw us the keys to a DSG GTI. We drove it home (familiar roads for a more accurate test drive).

Povo spec didn't come with HID's but it also didn't have a shark fin antenna on the roof, or any antenna on the roof which I love, less is more! I love how the new GTI's also do not have the ugly side mouldings on the doors. So clean.

Tartan interior isn't my thing but once you're inside you don't see it and these seats felt great, more huggy than the one's in Christina's R32 perhaps? The steering wheel also felt really chunky. Loved it.

OK so my impressions: Initial impression was how familiar the car felt. No surprise here as I am often in Christina's R32. The steering felt lighter than the R32 and the car turned into corners a lot better than the R32. I put this down to weight, it just felt really light and fun in the corners, more chuckable and more inspiring.

Noise: There was none! The car was just so quiet. No road noise, no exhaust, no engine noise but I wasn't really complaining. I thought it was stealthy and I kinda liked it.

DSG/Performance: What turbo lag? The car launches off the lights hard, traction control kicks in but it'll still let the wheels screetch. 4500rpm and the turbo is on full song. 1st and 2nd gear is awesome, 3rd gear it gets a little flat. Upshift at any rpm, even high rpm's on half throttle and it feels just like the DSG in Christina's car. Slow. You've tapped it, let go of the paddle, hit your head and rubbed your tummy then it shifts. Upshift with the accelerator pedal to the metal and a chunky thud can be heard and felt as the DSG just hammers the gear into place as soon as you press the paddle.

This had me laughing out loud. It's so fast, it upshifts as fast as it downshifts and it's damn addictive and it's definitely going to get a LOT of GTI DSG owners into trouble.

I tried hitting redline in 1st but as I thought, the car automatically shifted into 2nd for me. A little upsetting. I would have preferred it if it just hit a rev limiter, even if it was only for a second before it shifted into 2nd.

So I was mega impressed. So much so that I didn't even want to try the manual but Christina and Peter insisted so he threw me the keys to this manual GTI:

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4058/4412807238_bf77619264_o.jpg

I instantly felt wrong in this car. I had to put the clutch in to start it, which was strange straight off the bat and just driving it out of the dealership I felt that the car was super laggy down low in 1st gear. It almost felt like the aircon was robbing the car of power (that kind of feeling).

I then noticed that whilst the shifter initially felt notchy and sporty the throw was long and my fingers were hitting the centre console in 1st, 3rd and 5th. The fact that the GTI is so quiet inside the car also made driving the manual much less fun as I couldn't hear the engine on song and that made me lazy so I just found myself reaching for 5th gear a lot. The dash was also bugging me to get into 6th by displaying an arrow and a "6". I hated that. At some stage I had to reverse but I didn't know how to. I figured it out though of-course

So disapointed I cut the test drive on the manual early, turned around and headed back to Barloworld. I couldn't believe how much of a difference the transmissions made to the same car. The DSG was just so much more fun than the manual, so much more aggressive than the manual and the upshifts are so much faster than Christina's R32 DSG. I'm impressed!

I think the manual would have been a lot more fun with a tighter and shorter shift throw (short shift kit would have to be on the list of mods for a manual owner) as well as a tougher feeling clutch (it felt a little mushy and soft to me). I can't be sure whether or not the gear ratios are the same on DSG vs. manual but the manual sure felt like it had a taller 1st gear which made it feel a lot slower than the DSG off the lights.

PS: The trade in price on the Skyline was $15k (NO WAY!). Peter liked the Skyline and of-course he suggested that I sell it privately. He even said if he had the cash he'd buy it!

I've yet to test drive a MKV GTI but Peter owns a MKV GTI and has conformed that the DSG does not shift as fast as the MKVI GTI. I'd still like to try one though but for now I'll just see if I can sell the Skyline.

Haha nice arent they?

Yes the Mk6 has no shark fin antenna when the RCD510 is fitted, however if you go for the RNS you'll end up with the shark fin, which I think is a downer as the car looks so clean without it.

Havent tried to rev it to the redline in 1st but will have to give it a go next time I'm out.

So the fully optioned GTI was really that by the sounds with the ACC suspension hence the Sports mode, and I can see it has the 18" Huffs as well.

I agree that the DSG has the potential to get you into trouble with the upshift with the foot down, not sure if you did but did you get the DSG burble when doing this, makes me smile too when I hear/do this in mine.

I personnally think the interior has just the right level of subtle differences between the mk6 and mk5 to make the mk6 that next level, the removal of some of the nastier plastics and the change in the steering wheel/vents etc feels much more expensive and luxurious, and I like that the window switches are up higher and more visible. The one thing I find wierd is that the tire pressure reset switch is in the glove box in lieu of being out and accessable. The fuel consumption would be heaps bettwe than Suga's R as well ;) from memory I've averaged around 10l/100Km for the life of the car, and when city driving it sits around low 7's (cant help the odd little squirt) best I've had was high 5s, so from a tank you can get a min of 550km without a GTG thrown into the mix :D

I've got a small warranty fix needed at the moment but aside from that the only gripe I have with the car is the leaking rear washer, which is pretty common I believe.

So the question is Justin, after the drive, would you lay down the cash and make the leap to the Mk6 GTI?

Tendy I'd really appreciate this. A quick blat around Dedy's block would be more than enough to help me decide! I'll wait and see if the Skyline goes first before deciding on a MKV/VI GTI.

No problem.
Also, I'm just wondering if the DSG mechatronic unit is the same with the MkV. Maybe just different software.
A lot of noise made by people who reprogrammed their DSG. Said to be faster. Don't automatically upshift and so on.
Maybe worth a look too, Justin

Justin! Great write up! I felt just the same way when we test drove the TSI. So impressed with the Golf VIs. I really am thinking now that the MKVI Golf R could be a replacement for the MKV R32. Jane wants the BLUE one. It was quite a hard decision to choose the R32 over the MKVI TSI.

Peter is a good man - he sold me my R32

So what is the verdict MKV or MKVI ?

U cant go wrong with a dsg! only if i got mine in dsg form.

Hey Justin.

Maybe worth wating on the R20.

Or get a $300 ticket to Nz and test drive one. I am sure I can get my brother to pick you up and show you where to go :)

Not sure what your plans with the GTI, alot of modding, or are you gonna keep it stock (doubt it!).

Anyways, good luck with the decision and purchase.

Good write up!!! Love the two storm troopers at the dealership. Glad to see you went out and got in for a real experience to decide for yourself. Sounds like the DSG is go for you. Don't know if you travel around Sydney in the city much, but whenever I'm there I get nervous around all those one way streets and steep hills.

Would you upgrade to the Detroits or just keep stockies with the intent to buy aftermarket later =)

...and what colour?

I'm not jumping the gun yet guys. 1st thing's 1st: Sell the Skyline.

If that happens soon then I am open on talking price on a white 5 door MKVI GTI with Peter but in reality I'm perhaps leaning towards a clean low km's with remaining extended warranty MKV GTI (DSG) as I still like the shape better. I like the more square and minimalist interior better too, thinner plastic on the doors give a sense of more space. I like that the window switches are lower and not in your face and I love the centre console design and just general simplicity of the MKV's interior.

I drove Suga's R32 tonight as the MKVI test drives were still so fresh in my mind. I took it through the same roads too. The R32 just turns so well too. I can't fault it on most corners, it's just those longer sweepers that give away just how heavy the car is. There's a huge sense of security with the R32, mentally I might think it feels a little wrong at times but I know 100% it'll do it without worries. Faith. That's what that is.

I had a few high rpm blats and shifted whilst the pedal was flat to the ground and yes, Suga shifts fast but it's smooth whereas the MKVI GTI was almost instant, abrupt and aggressive. The DSG on the R32 feels refined, the MKVI GTI just felt like it was in some sort of sports mode (which I really liked).

In regards to mods I can't say I've planned out my route yet but I'm leaning towards track spec coilovers and to complement them I'd like the lightest forged rims out there in 18inch for more unsprung weight and response out there off the lights. If it was a MKVI GTI I'd leave the rear seats in there, if it was a MKV GTI I'll most likely try to strip 100kg at least off the car.

When you say that... Which one?!? I can't picture you getting rid of either, RB26 means so much to you and VQ35 has only been around for the blink of an eye!

Nice review. When I drove the DSG MK6 I was sold instantly and hence here's me waiting patiently to pick my new GTI up next month :D. The manual felt much the same to me...I thought that it didn't have as much go in 1st and my hands kept hitting the plastics. End of the day the DSG box was just too good to pass up for me.

I went for the 18" detroits because I liked the look. Those rims will suit me and I don't really see a need to upgrade. Stayed away from the adaptive chassis...I had 2 out of 3 dealers tell me it wasn't worth it unless I wanted a completely spec'ed GTI. Did you find it made that much difference?

As soon as I have my new baby I'll definitely be posting some pics up for you all to see. DSG in the MK6 GTI all the way!

V35 of-course. GTR4LYFEYO!

Ah that was the one in the showroom, the one tested didn't have it.
