View Full Version : Bizi's Blue Smoker: BBS Jetta TDI
Hey guys, I put on a couple of nice sets of wheels on a couple of cars today (plus a bit of brake work).
Decent photos to come.
In the meantime, a dinnertime, post-sunset pic after a great run to Galston Gorge and Berowra Waters via Arcadia.
I'll post it in the morning.
Next pics will be of the VW navigation install.
After that, the inpro chrome mirror replacements!

Nice look forward to some pics....
It's a grainy phone shot, so it's only going to give you a general idea, but here it is.
Trying again; I uploaded the pic to my page on this site, so it should be in my profile.
Second time lucky, forget picasa annoyances!

Pic not working Bizi..
Thanks, Frenchie; The album feature is good when it is too much hassle to muck around with faulty weblinks on photo hosts.
I'll just upload to this album and report progress. Hoping to get the mirror caps on to make it slightly distinctive.

Thanks,

Much better Bizi....What are your next mod plans?
I'd better put this thread back into action.
As you are probably aware, I've been hunting down a few bits and pieces.
I just need to find a time and a person/workshop to install the suspension and brakes, the intake and get some new shoes. :)
Since the Jetta TDI is just the stock TDI ride height, the suspension should make for the biggest cosmetic upgrade:

Koni FSD shock absorbers
I'll get some pics of the other gear and get some feedback.
Wheels are currently the BBS ones pictured. New shoes are hopefully not too far away, but I badly need to get this stuff installed, plus the GTI brakes.
If you have an opinion, let me know if you like or disline the idea of repainting the GTI calipers bronze, silver, black, yellow or whatever on this thread:
WTB (& yr opinion) Caliper paint GTI brakes (caliper colour options on Jetta) (http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?1811)
Thanks - and let me know if your recommended workshop... I'm leaning toward Dedy so that I could get the front guards rolled at the same time (and catch up with someof his regulars!).

Your not big on the photos eh? lol
Good effort though - Gives us the general idea...
Wow - There is alot of gap - You could have taken that thing to boat harbour... lol
Not a lot of Jetta build thread here. Good mods there. Neuspeed is a softer spring and matches well with the Koni FSD. Any reason why you chose Neuspeed instead of Eibach perhaps? I guess the Jetta is more of a cruiser(although I doubt seeing how you drive it at RNP) so these combo might go really well.

It grips and handles surprisingly well with the stock suspension and wider stance (35 offset 17x8s), until it gives way to terminal understeer thanks to the heavy donk (like when trying to keep up with a Cayman S, R26 and R32 ABT to Wollombi on the twisty hill 270degree turns!).
A few pics from my vw picasaweb account ( (http://picasaweb.google.com/benbrowning1/VW#)not so interesting, which is why I've not posted them):

Hi Bizi: Need to see the entire car in side stance to see the gap with the neu's and fsd.
By the way, received the below links from my email account. They have a spoiler lip for the Jetta now made by OSIR and a rear valance. I reckon it will look hot against your car's colour. I am sure you can get them from Ian but here it is.

Thanks for this, Jig!
Note that I've just ripped off and posted a few pics from a few browser tabs I had open, for future cross-reference.
Once mine is finally done I'll have a go with camera and tripod and see if I can get some decent pics.
Really appreciate the help!
Ben
I've booked the car into Dedy at Top One to get the Jetta fitted with:
Koni FSDs;
Neuspeed springs;
GTI sway(s) [unsure if it's too much time/work to fit the front one];
GTI front & rear rotors/calipers/pads/lines assemblies (but have been told the lines are all the same for Jetta/Golf);
Roll front guards.
I have a spare set of brand new rotors and pads in case there is any issue with the GTI ones.
Anything else? Let me know if you have suggestions. Thanks!
Anyone planning to be at Top One 'next' Friday the 13th?
I have the Modshack to install, too.
Thanks,
Ben

Yeh I like it just sitting on the tyre...
Gives it a 'sleeker' look... But then again? Who am I to talk - I still havnt lowered mine - But ill just be taking mine straight to Pedders for coilovers e.t.c from them... They install and set up and ive been happy with them in the past...
Just adding this here because I've never seen nor heard of it before and thought the front bumper is a bit of a Thunder Bunny (?) / R32 hybrid.
A bit much for most cars (and this particular one's overkill unless you own the parts shop), but interesting enough to keep in mind.
http://www.abdracing.com/project/jettaV/images/main.jpg
The bumper is OK but I don't like the grillle. Needs something different.
I'm still thinking about a chrome deletion/replacement with an OSIR front, so the bumper here is just for reference.

Ben maybe forget the front swaybar. I don't think you need it and it's a big job ($ in labour). I'll see if I can drop in when you're at Top-One for a catch-up!

Thanks, Justin!
Do you know if it's possible to securely park my car there overnight and leave the keys, so that I don't have to do a drive through the peak hour on Friday? Dedy wants to begin at 8AM!

Justin,
Dedy's a very hard worker! He was still working away when I dropped off the Jetta (after the bloody GPS' errors sending me the wrong way) and it was after 7PM, sad to say.
It was a pleasure to finally meet the one who so many trust their cars with and I am looking forward to returning tomorrow, around 2.30PM (maybe a bit earlier).
Anyone around to catch up? I will be stupidly happy that the car's finally sitting better and rolling less.
Yes, the front sway is too much time and hassle (undoing the front subframe etc) for the install.
Those GTI front rotors and calipers are bloody heavy together, as you may also have experienced. ;) They have been washed and scrubbed a bit but remain red because I figure it's better to leave for now.
Sadly, the wheels are not able to be delivered to Top One as I'd hoped (as the company wouldn't change the destination once it had been arranged), so it will still have the BBS RX tomorrow.
Enkei Racing gear will be for another day. I will need to get suitable wheel bolts! :D
I might swing by in the arvo if you still there :)
That would be fantastic, 10d. I'll PM my number.
Too bad about not getting the wheels to here, instead of to my place. :(
Unfortunately it's not practical to go home from work, put two huge boxes in a Corolla and drive to Top One, and get there at a reasonable time.
I am so happy you can make it! :D Dedy's rolling the guards, if the paint's OK for that... and will likely need it as the wheels are 35 offset, 18x8 with S Drive tyres.
My lock nut's gone missing!
I am sure I'd left it somewhere appropriate, IN the car...
I've had to PM a few of you.
If anyone has some info regarding using other VW locknuts, let me know.
Dedy's running out of ideas. :(
I am on my way home to see if this stupid lock nut is there. Sorry, guys.
Tendy and co., if you CAN get there and see Dedy, PLEASE see if your lock nut works!
I'll be coming back in the Corolla, hopefully with the locknut and new wheels, so will hopefully have news in the hour.

It really makes it more memorable when things don't exactly go to plan!
Good luck finding it Ben, hanging in here for updates!
Yep, 'what could possibly go wrong?' thoughts when Dedy said Friday 13th was the best day to get it done. Not his fault at all... point the finger at YT.
My ex
press train home leaves the platform as I get there;
This next train spends 10mins sitting on the tracks, 1km from home, with no explanation (no trains passed and not a normal stopping point).
There are apparently four major wheel lock kits at dealers... Dedy tried three.
I hate rushing and had to do so to get everything there in time, last night. Dedy even asked about the bolt last night but we didn't bother looking through the car to have it ready... major lesson there!
Bizi, those 3 locks at Top One were mine. Tough luck, mate :(
Thanks to my local VW dealer and my mate who went out of his way to source me some nice locking bolts, it's happening really soon.
Car is with Dedy.

Car wasn't ready for collection yesterday, but it looks hopeful to be ready this arvo. So you are invited to see it!

Just FYI if you are interested in seeing the longest build of the simplest mods in history. ;)
Here's my experience.
Dedy was great! Always a pleasure. Very gracious considering my locknut disaster last week. Did great work!
Sorry about the quality. It was getting dark when I collected it, then I had to get lost, then get to see Johno and then home, then a late dinner, unload the original parts, THEN take pics!
Pics taken somewhere near my place, but not my place. :)

A few people have seen the car at Top One and on the way home.
Now, some feedback.
First, on my way back, I get, for the very first time, an alert about tyre pressure!
There is a slow leak from one of the metal valves. This will need fixing. There was a substantial difference in pressure between front and rear tyres, hence the alert. Hopefully mostlyfixed now that the pressure has been equalised to approx 40psi.
Now the fun stuff. After all of the traffic lights, getting a little lost after missing a turn, I finally got onto my fun route home.
On my mini test drive I notice that the steering feels so much more direct; lightning-fast and light!
Tyres are a bit noisier than the ones on my 17" BBS.
On the twisties of the Comenarra Parkway,it feels like the same engine but a Cayman S handling! Whoopee!!!!
Is is SO much better!!! :p I didn't think the Koni FSDs, springs, Enkeis and Yokohama S Drives would work so well together. :)
The northern B roads will be the true test drive, tomorrow. :)
I'd like to thank Dedy for making this possible, YouSnooze for originally selling me the suspension, Oli for his great help and the brakes, Kaan for his amazing helpfulness and the wheel locknuts and lots of other stuff, Tendy and Justin for sending me to Dedy, plus Rocco, Shannon, Jig and John for the drives, Stephen for the advice and inspiration with your Jetta project and so many of you who have shared your experiences and welcomed people to share their experiences, both here and personally.
With Winter over soon, let's try to get a few drives happening - not just mega things, but impromptu ones too. I hope you can see this little blue smoker sometime soon. :)
[Wheel nuts again were a slight issue, hence they are not all silver as expected...will need to get some more!]
Looks good but need better pics to really see the car. I might see it in person in one of the drives. Great result by the sounds of it Bizi. Well done.

Different!
I'll get some with wine country backgrounds if it doesn't rain. Car looks better now it's been washed this morning. Looks lower than those crap night flash pics indicate. Especially the front, considering the springs and FSDs may be for GTI, not TDI engine weight. :)
Dedy did his front guards magic. :)
Luckily my car's top speed is constrained by the diesel being a lazyboy, otherwise I'd be trying to keep up with the 997 CS and 996T boyz, Jig!
Lets do a nice drive next weekend again. Hopefully JayC can join us with his ABT SC R32 and his modified clutch.

hey Ben they look great!!!
Even beter on the car than when I saw them in their packaging. Mate you certainly had a few hassles with that bloody lock nut but you have prevailed, well done and the car looks schmick!!!
Wow it sounds like the suspension package has made a great difference and reading your review reminded me when I put 18s on my GTI, so different. Anyways, great stuff Ben and definitely need to check these out in the flesh-are you thinking OPH at anytime soon? Rocco, Jig?
Well done Ben v nice mate!
Lets do a nice drive next weekend again. Hopefully JayC can join us with his ABT SC R32 and his modified clutch.
I hope I've not missed the duelling ABT SC R32s! Next weekend? Can we get Kaan along, too? :)
Speaking of nice cars on the good roads, Jig...
I did spot a nice 997 on our fun stretch (it was just about to get to the twisties near Laguna, north of the Great North Road) as we headed back to Sydney.
You will laugh at this... we did notice a few people staring at the car quite a few times as we drove through Broke Rd, where there are people hanging around by the street. Maybe they were confused! :p :D
Aside from the 997 coming home, there was a Carrera at the Crowne Plaza in the carpark and a nice black C63 headed to Wandin Valley Estate for a wedding function. A nice white 1 series coupe and that's about it for interesting cars. A couple of stock GTIs and TDIs too. That's all.
The Yokos and Enkei 18s handled all the roads, the potholed Hunter Valley thoroughfares and the stretches of unsealed roads to get to a few notable cellar doors.
If anyone's open to options for going wine tasting in September, I'm happy to assist with an itinerary which includes scenic backdrops for pics, places with seating for tastings, places with grassed areas for picnics or kids play and whatever else. :)
Pics uploaded and a few will be posted here for feedback.
Here ya go, Stephen... PM me if you can meet up and try it with me, so I can fine tune anything.

hey I've stayed there, it's nice. Ben that looks like a different car man, I absolutely love those rims and good pics too, can see it much better now.
I like the wheels... Lower that bitch a bit more
Big transformation there. I like it Ben. Wheels are peculiar are'nt they with a spider web kind of finish. Very unique and matches well with the car. Is that as low as it can go? Lowering probably another 5mm will further improve handling but may get bothered with all the road imperfections we have in sydney.
No drive this weekend at all. Next drive might just have to be the one on Sep 25...

Seen these wheels in the flesh today & they're BRILLIANT!! soooooo much nicer in real life. Well done Ben.
Thanks for the comments. I suppose more lowering on the back is still a possibility. However it gives me the ability to load up the boot. I had four BBS wheels/tyres, four more 18" tyres, the old front and rear brakes and coils and shocks in the car on my way home from Top One and will likely drive to car to Melbourne again soon - plus a couple of Canberra trips.
It's got to remain functional as a sedan, not just as an OPH touring car. :p
Jig, we did make it to the Brooklyn section of OPH today but sadly that was all for today.
I can say that the car's much flatter on these roads and can easily do 15% more through each of these corners. I kept up with Rocco with no problems. Thanks for the BBQ, Shannon and Corinne! :D

I give you full marks Ben for trying something different. I've never been a huge fan of those Enkei's but I've found myself very damn close to buying some at times in the past (for various cars I've owned) as they're tough and light and I've seen them on a lot of hardcore race cars.

NT03's showing off a concave face (aggressive offset).
Lowering the car some more would really set them off but hey, not everyone can tolerate a low ride so I very rarely push people to lower their cars (geez, so understanding!).
Thanks, Justin. They are a great combination with the quality tyres, great oh-so-smooth FSDs, biger rear GTI swaybar and the springs (which may not be progressive as it can get a bit bouncy).
I eventually went this route after considering a ton of other options which didn't really fit my needs. They will be a bugger to clean but they are light and the 'webbing' bits allow the ret of the wheel to be lighter and they really are light wheels. I think they suit the look of the car and arguably would do well on other dark cars with chrome or brushed alloy themes.
They make a real statement when you see the car sparkling and the wheels having that great brushed metal look. :)
There are always thngs that could be done to improve the functionality of the car for its applicatio to its usual twisty roads, but I plan to enjoy and fine tune it for the upcoming months. :)

Good call, Stephen. :) That's hot. City Perfirmance should put these on their orange BMW V8 supercar. :)
BMWs seem to get everything thanks to their bolt pattern; I've not seen this wheel on many 5x112 cars, but I was alway looking at the lightest possible wheels on Tire Rack and some wheel experts had good comments about Enkei Racing. :)

I think it's an improvement on the OEM style, for black cars anyway (like GTIs & Pirellis).
