GTR35 (I hope they squeeze in under budget)
Because it is ugly and magnificent... And not a Porsche.
Or perhaps a fleet of poverty pack Nissan micras to play car football.

I like the car football idea. :)
You might be onto something here, Kev. Suspicious.

Come on guys its hypothetical! All the moons have to be aligned for this kinda money.
But Tendy you are pretty spot on. I have been looking at the TT RS. They look great on the road!

Hmm well plenty of new cars that I'd look at but for a classic approach it would have to be the Aston DB6, not quite a DB5, but it has a few extra luxuries and well its under the allowed budget >D

White RS4. Saw one for the first time on the weekend. Really subtle (as subtle as those flares can be) in that colour.

+1 on the C63! I was looking to buy that but the 911 won out (even though it's in a totally different bracket). I found it far more streetable than a M3.
A 2nd hand Porsche Cayman springs to mind too, better drivers car than both the merc and beemer.
How about the Audi A5 coupé? Very executive, I always see middle aged obusiness suits driving them.
-11 for the R35 GTR. $11k for a new set of tyres and brakes? Forget it!
TTRS while not my cuppa, is a worthwhile consideration.
Classics? too many to choose from!

Unfortunately $140K in this country doesn't buy you a worthwhile car. You have to tip the scales over $160K before it becomes worthwhile.

Id buy a White Beemer 335 Sedan, Bilstein Coilovers 19" BBS LM's, nice exhaust and a tune :)
I'd buy a used Polo 1.9 TDI.
Then put the rest of the savings into a investment account for a while then get an Aston DB9
:D
Since this is a hypothetical (and I am strange), how about one of these, in five colours, for every day of the work week?

A colleague is in a very fortunate position to buy a car in this price range and he is looking quite closely at a TTRS. He knew I was a bit of a car nut and asked my opinion so I thougt it be interesing to see what my other car enthusiasts thought.
I like the Cayman S but need to spend more to get the right specs. Of all of them suggested above my money would go towards the AMG C63 or a second hand RS4 then I would buy a Ducati 1198 R with the money I save.
I would still keep the GTI though!:D

Has it occurred to anyone that it costs $5,000 every time you change a brake pad in the GT-R? A good mate of mine in Melbourne had bought a demo GT-R and when the car reached 7,000 kms he had brake problems.
He took it back to the Nissan stealership and it turned out that the brake pads had cracked. They refused to honour the warranty as they claimed that he had tracked the GT-R. As it is in the new GT-R you must change brake pads WITH rotors as these two wear together. He took it up with Nissan Australia and they refused his claim.
$5,000 to change some brake pads which SHOULD HAVE been covered under warranty. Pathetic. Needless to say, he's never buying a 'super car' from Nissan again.
In last months MOTOR magazine another dude wrote in with the same issue, except that he had to change something else (which I can't remember) and he was charged $11,000 for his 'warranty' work.
Twice the money buys a Porsche 911 GT3, but at least the pads only cost $500! At least it's properly designed and engineered.

I heard Nissan won't warrant anything on the GT-R if it's been tracked!!! WTF...

That doesn't even make sense!..
What the hell else is the point of buying one?
I imagine for most buyers that is the sole reason for buying on.
Surely it's not seen as a daily runabout? lol

Haha I'd like to think not! I think the whole voiding of the warranty if you use launch control is a bit ridiculous too...it's a massive gamble for the owners. Nissan say if you use it and it doesn't break, then you're all good to keep using it...but if it breaks - sorry no warranty!

Does seem a bit crazy, and can't you use aftermarket pads anyway ?
Guess you have to pay to play, the RS6 front brake discs (& pads?) are 3500 to replace.
Silly having a supercar you can't drive on the track.

New Motor magazine review of TT-RS vs Cayman S puts the Cayman ahead. Though budget wise I think the Porsche gets a tad expensive with "standard" options once you start ticking boxes.
Also joining in on the R35 discussion. Even though it costs less than other cars of its ilk, apparently it costs more for everyday maintenance than those more expensive cars.
$140k for a car other than the C63 I would probably get a S2000 and mod the crap out of it.
Tinto
10-03-2010, 07:37 PM
On a perception front, I think it is harder for a car with a lower spec model in its range (like the TT) to punch too far outside its category.
I drove a BMW Z3 (sub two litre) once, which forever tainted the Z cars in my eyes (it was a hire car, so I HAD to flog it) - and that was after being taken for a spin in a Z3M too.
I couldn't shake the stigma.
IMO Manufacturers need to release the hot model first and create a strong desire (but not necessarily sales), then trickle down to the poverty pack models.
That makes the poverty pack models seem affordable while the halo model doesn't seem like a hopped up cheapo.
I know this doesn't apply in all cases - eg I don't think less of an RS4 because an A4 exists.
But there's something already niche about the TT that feels like they needed to start at the top and move down.

I heard that the R35 is fragile (highly strung). For the money, i would get a second hand porsche 911 gt3 if I wanted to track it.

$140k for a car other than the C63
Are you prepared to change your tyres every 8000km, my boss owns one and drives like a granny and has replaced three sets of tyres in 20,000km. It's an expensive exercise because the tyres are specially rated for the C63. Very soft tyres.

I'd gladly replace as many tyres as it takes Capercat if I HAD the money to buy a C63!!! That does sound pretty bad though, but not as bad as the exhaust in full song. Now that is BAAAAAAAD!!

Isn't that the same issue with the R32 and the required load rating and why it is such a pain in the arse (or at least expensive) to get the correctly rated tyre if you want to go up to 19"?

Oh don't get me started on a NSX-R *droolz*
I was contemplating getting that instead of the 911 but could not be justified due to the complications of importing and no cost effective way to have it registered as a business vehicle for taxation purposes :p
