After years of 4WDing in my 1997 Jeep Wrangler the call for a 'fun' car for the road took a hold of me. Next step was a small daily driver Peugeot 205 GTi, a car i always loved and admired. Whilst the 205 was an amazing car to drive, 20 yr old French cars are not the most reliable. The decision was made to sell them both and get into a Golf R32.

The Jeep

The Pug

I have a bit of a thing for the slightly unusual car; the one that everyone doesn't have. Hence a Wrangler instead of a Hilux, a 205 GTi instead of a Corolla, an R32 instead of a WRX.

So off i go and start looking for an R32. With less than 190 left in Australia (some say closer to 150 now) there are not many to choose from. Fortunately just as my Jeep sold a Silver one with only 50,000km on the clock came up for sale, in Sydney too. Headed over and checked it out. It was imacculate. The feeling i had when he drove it out of the underground garage was a great memory. The sound, the look of the thing and the fact it could soon be mine. A week later it was.

Stock as rock for now. Wouldn't mind some black rims at some stage ut after dropping a bomb of $$$$ into my Jeep i promised myself i wouldn't modify again. Had it down at Wakefield a few months back and was very impressed. Finished with a 1.16 but am pretty sure i could have pushed into the 15's if i didn't have a small off which bust one of my rims. Damn.

Let's see if this works. I think it pulled abgout 137 or 138kw at the wheels.

Once a modder, always a modder! Get those black rims!;)

Nice addition Sir_Camel...

Looks like you and I have very similar taste in cars, I too had a Jeep, Subaru, 106 & 307 Peugeot and many other French cars...

Agreed, Black wheels will tie in nicely with Silver but remember once you start modding there is no stopping :)

My first update in here and isn't about a new set of sweet rims or anything.

Got back to my car parked at the station on Thursday to find one of my number plates had been stolen. Lame-o. Called the cops etc etc. Haven't been used for anything but yea $100 to get a new set printed up. Previous owner went crazy with double sided tape too so LOTS of it on there. Hopefully next update will be better news.

And even that is only temporary. Just wait til the wallet fills up again and forget you were ever sick

I like this car a lot and I agree completely with having that 'slightly unusual car'. Much respect, even though she's (currently) standard - very clean :) The number plate is kind of unusual.. Who would just take one, and then not use it?

That my plates will always be on police system as being stolen apparently so will always be pulled over if they check my plates...

hey sir_camel! yet another Aussie Frog converting to VWs

The 205 will without a doubt be the most fun to drive car i have ever owned. Was basically a go kart. Was the best i could find for sale in Aus when i bought it. Was in Adelaide. Flew down and drove all the way back to Sydney. While it was amazing fun, it was a 20 year old french car. Learnt how to push start a car with it. In rainy weather it would just not start sometimes. It leaked a bit too. But all that was forgiven when in the twisties. It had 130,000km on it when i bought it in Sept 07 and 150,000ish i think when sold in April 09. It now lives in Brisbane. A few more pics...

After i got home from rAdelaide...

Some ugly yellow standard issue plates temporarily. Wasn't allowed to get Pink Slip passed with only one set of plates so got some yellows for 2 weeks.

Update time:

So i've been a bit silent on VWGOLF for a few weeks. My mum had an anuerism about 6 weeks ago so much attention has been focused towards her and the family but things are going well and she should be out of hospital into a rehabilitation centre in the next week or two.
Update time:

On the Golf front, i've had my R32 in the workshop for 2 weeks getting suspicious clunking in suspension sorted out. It seems i was a bit paranoid and there was actually no damage so it must have been something on the road i heard. I also got my leaking drivers window seal fixed. Can i put in a massive plug for Pacific Motors in Pymble. These guys were so fantastic. Amazing customer service and very knowledgable. They apparently service 3 MKIV R32's regularly (all Reflex Silver!!!) so know their way about them and common probhlems. I'm wasn't worried about the 2 weeks either as i had an extra car available and told them i'm in no rush.

I picked up the 32 yesterday and oh man i am loving having it back. I've still been in the VW fold while the .:R was in the shop driving my mum's 06 Jetta. Hmmm...nasty gearbox (non DSG auto). The one good thing about her being in hospital.

Will hopefully be ordering my new plates this weekend and giving her a wash. I'll try get some decent photos of her soon.

So I've gotten into a bit of road cycling since I got back from europe and today sorted some Thule racks to take the bike places if I'm too lazy to ride. Basically an excuse to put a fairing on...

Nice Mark, how do you find the wind noise? ~350 for bars and locks etc? + 120 for fairing?

Looks good.

Euro numberplates or black and silvers maybe?

sir_camel
22-10-2011, 11:53 AM
Thanks Mal.

No wind noise to speak of yet. Haven't been above 80ish though. Hoping the fairing will sort that out. Got the bars for just under 300 and fairing for 120. fitted for free. A mate is a supplier for a roof rack shop near me so they looked after me a bit.

Completely agree about the plates. I had euros with N RR32R but they got stolen. These were temporary but everytime I am about to go to the RTA to get new ones i decide i'm going to sell it. I think I'm going to hold onto it now for a bit longer so I might go some new plates.

Contemplating bike stuff as mine will always have the bike rack on. Don't have any tuning/mods on my .:R so none brand specific mod stuff.
