I know this is usually done to death on other forums and can sometimes result in some interesting discussions :icon_neutral: but I thought it'd be good to have a tyre thread on our new home.
Discussion should centre around questions on all things tyre related, including user reviews on current and new products as they are released.
Hope this fits with the theme of the new forum.

So I'll run with the first question then.
Has anyone here fitted the CSC3's to their Golfs?
I currently have RE050's (OEM fitted) on my 17" stock wheels and I think the replacement wheels I'm looking at come with CSC3's as an option so just wanted thoughts on them as a tyre?

if you're going to be putting new tyres on, look no futher than Goodyear EAGLE F1 ASYM

really have loved these tyres , after running toyos and michelins (and conti's on the old MK4).

Yeah I think the F1s would be my preference, just wondering if the CSC3s are any good if the money is right on the wheel package.
If its not then I'll prob just buy the wheels and order F1s from tirerack.com :)

Tough call this one and many people just love the tyres they buy, or they have on their cars from factory.
For years I used to run R Compound Semi's on my daily drivers. A lot of people say they're dangerous on the street (especially in the wet) as they don't warm up enough but I found that they did, quickly too (10 minutes into a drive). A few negatives: They wear out damn fast, they constantly kick up little rocks which you can hear from inside the car, they're noisy at speed (sound like a swarm of bees under your car) and they're slower too as they're so grippy and sticky but damn, it's like cornering confidence nirvana, so much so you begin not only not braking into corners but you begin to power down before, during and out of corners you would usually brake, lift off, turn and power out of.
So it took me AGES to get used to being on street tyres again after semis. Bit of understeer here, oversteer there and I just lost a lot of confidence but yes, all the tyres I've tried had better wet performance on the street than semis, longer tyre life too. For me it's 2 tyres that stand out so far:
Toyo T1R - great in the wet.
Bridgestone RE001 Adrenalins - perfect all-rounder. I've had them cure freaky oversteer on the S2000 (quite a twitchy car on the limit) and had them on a few other Honda's. They're most likely what I'll continue to use from now on.
Justin,
What about them RE11s? Ordered a set of them for me new rollers

I can't recommend the OEM Dunlops on the r32. :(
Realised yesterday that one of them had a bubble on the side wall, took all of them off to check and found more bubbles on another 1. So 2 had bubbles. :(
So the R is off the road and i'm up for new tyres. Car isn't even a year old and i've only just hit 10000k.

I've not had any experience with them but damn on paper they sound almost too good to be true! A track tyre for the streets?! Nice!

I'm currently got Bridgestone RE001 Adrenalins. I'm quite happy with them and would not hesitate to get them again. Some people have suggested they're somewhat lacking in the wet. I think it's more a case of driving in an appropriate manner according to the conditions.

So a question, I've picked out some wheels (my one big purchase for the next 12 months at least) and am about to place the order (2-3 weeks to ship :() and need to buy my tyres at some point, so trying to save some cash I intend to buy from Tirerack (hopefully they still ship to Aus).
Anyway my question is, the wheels are 8 x 18 ET 50 LK 5x112, will the 225/40R18 XL tyres fit? Want to make sure I buy something that is going to fit.
Also with the TPMS, is it easier to just tranfer them from the old set to a new set or buy a new set, and if a new set is required where can I source them from?
Kind of excited now I found a set I like at a 'reasonable price' now to break the news to the wife..........
Don't worry nath, 225's easily fit an 8" wheel.
And TPMS isn't in the wheel (only US), I think ours works off the ABS. So again, nothing to worry about mate.

Yup. Don't worry. It will be fine. Just reset the TPMS after you change your wheels.

Nath,
My most recent quote (this week) was $302.20 FedEx International 3-5 business day shipping, or $432.69 Express shipping 1-3 business day shipping for 4x 18" tyres.
Everyone I know that has purchased tyres off them them haven't had any issues and the only problem i've found is that they can't accept credit cards.

I'm due for some new tyres soon which is pretty early. There definitely is a price advantage from ordering from Tirerack. Anyone checked the manufacture date of the tyres they have received from them to ensure they are recently manufactured? I imagine you would still have to pay someone down here to fit them. I'm on Tirerack right now looking at the Goodyear F1 Symmetric. If the difference is a grand or so I may be tempted to go through Tirerack and get some wheels as well. Unless of course someone here knows a local dealer selling nice wheels =)

Yeah the F1s are around $170ea I think according to their site, maybe a little less without taxes? not sure will let you know on monday when I hear back from the dealer if you like Pharkus.

I was running these in 225/40/18 on a previous car and I thought they were a great tyre for the price. I found them to be a little quieter than the Bridgestone RE050's currently fitted to our Golf, too.

Good to hear, I was going to get the 595 Evo's, but they seemed a bit extreme for just street use, so i went for the ss-595, also quite a bit cheaper. Getting them fitted this week.

So after dealing with a very nice and helpful guy at tirerack I decided not to buy them fromthe US. Whilstthe tyre price was good at US$176 ea for F1s the shipping pushed this beyond US$1000 total and at that price I'll stay local. So after listening to the comments here and via PM (thx 10d) and reading a bunch of reviews online etc I've gone in another direction. In place of the F1s that I was going to get for around the same money (little less) I'm going to give the new PS3s a run :)
Ordered them today and will pickup Thursday hopefully they live up to reports/expectations but I'll let you know.
Don't thank me, Nath. LOL.
I just go with what AP recommended. But according to him and some other people, the PS3 is not a replacement to the PS2. It will still be a very good tyres, but the PS2 replacement wwould be even better. Sorry for being blunt, but I'm just saying what I learnt.
Would be interesting to hear your say.

Hey just going off the press release kit from Michelin on the PS3 and some of the reviews (http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Michelin/Pilot-Sport-3-PS3.htm) already available online.
According to Michelin the PS3 it is the replacement for the PS2 and has marked increases in stopping distance etc, apparently 3m in the wet (not sure what speed), and an increase in endurance and supposedly they're more 'green' being more fuel efficient (not sure how this works), will see how they go.

Pirellis come with the P-Zeros. It would seem strange if i change to any other tyre besides those hahah
Haha. Guess mine would be a CW Pirelli now, huh? >D
Nath, that was the same review and press kit I got. Apparently according to the tyre guys they will bring out something else that will be more performance oriented like the PS2. Kinda the same story with the Conti CS2 and CS3. I also almost got the PS3 and went with the PZero instead to AP and their recommendation.

fair enough 10d, trial and error for me at the moment really, still learning all the bits a bobs.
I guess I'll live with the tyres, if in the future they arent up to spec then I can always upgrade ;)
O and I was only thanking you for the suggestion you sent by PM, but thats cool thanks withdrawn ;)

You are one cheeky bugger >D
The PS3 would be a very good tyres anyway, I doubt that under normal driving condition you will be able to push it past it performance limit. Also, I think it is also a better wet tyres than the PS2. Safety first! Specially if you are carrying Junior with you.

If they are not directional that would be fine, if they are directional, just front to back.

Yes, very impressed, inside wheelspin out of and through turns has been decreased severely and wheelspin off the line has also reduced, and obviously, braking is now improved as the tyres loose traction a lot later. However i have noticed a big increase in tyre noise, as i often drive with my windows down.

Don't know if this has been mentioned already but Goodyear are having a Buy 4 get one free Sale.
Just been quoted $378 a tyre for F1 Asymmetrics

Really I wasnt quote anything near that locally for F1s when I was looking.
A guy at Bridgestone did say that he couldnt get them at all as they were being rolled out, is that true? If so may explain the sale?

RRP for the 18" is $505. I know Fattyboomba got his for $350 but I think this is a good price for the Gong.
Doubt whether this model is being discontinued as its only been on the market for a short while.
Other quotes were F1 GSD3 - $360 a tyre
Excellence - $330 a tyre

I just ordered 225/40/18 F1 Assymetrics from Tirerack. USD 1005 inclc freight. Not sure how much they will hit me for taxes.....
I got quoted $435 a tyre here in perth
Yeah I got that information straight from the Michelin rep himself, he was there the day I was discussing 10d tyres and he said that they are going to release a PS2 performance that will be the replacement tyre for the current PS2.. I thought he would be a good source as they are the Australian importers..

$378 for F1s is a good price. When I looked many months back it was well over $450 a corner. Hence my trip to tirerack at 92c US exchange. Better price than 4 for 3 even. Not so with the rate diving recently.
Stay away from GSD3. I wouldn't put them on anything - RUBBISH. That's right - RUBBISH!!!
Happy with my F1s. Definitely better than CSC2 OEM, noticeably better grip dry and wet. Noise is similar.
i just bought a set of Advan Sport V103s
ive had the following tyres on my past and current GTIs
Kuhmo KU31s
Pirelli P-Zeros
Pirelli P-Zero Rossos
Conti Sport Contact 2s
Advan Sport V103s
and ive had them on both my new GTI and my old one... very happy!
How do you rate the KU31s, Mark?

Put these on my car Yokohama S.drive... love them. Highly recommend and one step below the Yoko Advans (entry level) for $100+ cheaper each. Many forums and reviews say they are just as good as the advans.

I'm really rating the Sport Contact 2's that came on my GTI from the dealer. I've never really had performance tyres before and these are great. I have a lot of mates that run the Kuhmo KU36 on their cars and really rate them. Anyone had any experience on the KU36's in a GTI? I was thinking these could be my next set of tyres when it is time to upgrade.
How do you rate the KU31s, Mark?
theyre not as good as the P-Zeros or the Yokohama V103s but they are on par with the rossos.
i think for the money theyre awesome value, theyre very quiet and grip well in the wet. however in the dry theyre not as grippy as i would want and they do walk around a little under heavy breaking or hard fast cornering.
theyre a great option if you dont want to spend the big $$ for high performance tyres.

Marty,
I'm running the KU31s and rate them highly.
I'm on 30K now and probably have another 10-15K in them and for the record drive them hard.
My GT originally came with CSC2s and I though they were the best thing ever until they hit 10K. They became very noisy and I thought the performance had dropped off markedly.
Grip wise - I'd rate the KU31s the same as the CSC2s in the dry but the KU31s are not as good in the wet. Still excellent but not as good as the Contis (nor would they want be for the price difference).
I've also found the KU31s to be a quiet tyre in comparison too.
If you're interested in a set Marty, try the Option 1 Garage in Qld or I can pm you contact details.

I'm running Kumho KU37's and they're a bit better than the KU31 (which I've had on a few cars) but you summed it up pretty well, they do tend to 'walk' a little under fast cornering.
They don't feel as surefooted on the road as the conti's or the bridgestone RE050A's. I'm not sure what I'll get next, for the price the Ku37's are awesome. Depends how much money I have when I need them next lol.

Not a continental tyres fan.
2 of the EOM continental sports contacts got sidewall blisters (at low km from new), with no warranty cover from either VWA or Continental Australia.

Depending on price/availability of these when i upgrade to larger size/diametre wheels, i think i might go for either the KU31 or the KU36. Mileage isn't a huge issue for me, its more grip in wet and dry. Just trying to burn these shitty maxxis now :(
