I'm a sucker for Ronals too.
My fave wheel of all time though is still the CE28N. It's one of the lightest forged rims that Rays make and it's just a timeless Japanese multi-spoke classic. Here are mine on the GT-R:

Leaning towards the Advan RS at the moment, trying to find the time and a place where they have both them and the RS-D's to look at in person. Mentioned in the tyre thread I need new tyres so may just bite the bullet and do them both at the same time. I've read mixed reviews on the quality of OZ wheels, but I like the look of the Alleggerita HLT in Matt Graphitt Silver or Titamium Tech. http://www.ozracing.com/at-team/wheels/racing/alleggerita-hlt/en

If you have a GTI I think it's not so bad for tyres. The rating required for the R32 is a real deal breaker on 19's.

I've just seen Jig's wheels and have been left speechless. Most people would get turned on by the look of the wheel, how classic it is, colour, how light hey are, how big etc. I'm blown away by just how easy those look to clean!!!

OK. Anyone know of a design similar to Jig's that are around the $2k mark but still good quality. Looking for 18 x 8.
Very nice, what rubber are you going to wrap them with?
Thanks Steve. I will have to look and see what state my OEM Dunlop Sport Maxx is at. I dont do a whole lot of kms driving and I have only clocked 16K kms. If there is enough thread left, I will just swap them over to the new wheels. If not, I have 3 tyre choices below in order of preference.
1. Michelin Pilot Sport 3
2. Continental CS3
3. Yokohoma Advan Sport

You can Pharkus. After my Work VS-XX, the classic style of this wheel is perfect. EAsier to clean and makes the wheel look bigger. I also chose this classic 5 spoke Wheel because my brakes will be replaced by Brembo's 6pot BBK which will show up nicely. You are reducing unsprung weight on the car by 22Kgs. That is significant and can easily equate to better performance. Same with the BBK. It will reduce 10Kgs off compared to the OEM calipers and discs. So in total 30Kgs of weight saving.

Frenchie your wheels are the BBS CH-R right? And in 20"?
I'm interested in those wheels but 19" - just dont know if they will go with the CSG on the GTI.
If I switch to the R I am 99% sure those are the wheels I will go with.
If I stick with the GTI, itll most likely be the VMR 710's.

Hi Justin: I dont have the offset as yet. The forging specs is coming within the next week or so and once that has been applied onto the wheel, only then can they tell me what the offset is going to be. Very similar -
best is to open 2 pages from Tirerack side by side and compare, you will find that CH-R are more ''open'' ''white writing'' and may have one spoke less ?

Thanks - just did this and you are 100% right. I hadn't realized that the CH-R were so different.
They look more like the VMR 710's which I really like.
On Tirerack at least they're about the same price as the regular CH Black's like yours.
Would love to see how they go with CSG on a GTI. I have a feeling there isnt enough contrast.
I'd 100% be inclined to grab them if I switched to the R in another color (Blue/White).

The spokes on the CH-R are a lot sharper and more agressive than on the original CH wheels. VMR's are also on my list but am just doing a bit more research into the quality of these vs the Enkeis that 10D has.
I know 18x 8 fits flush with most wheels but this would depend on the offset. I'm really new to changing wheel sizes so don't like to muck around in this area. The other thing is that I would not like to go bigger than 8.5 width and to do a search to make sure that this is still within ADR guidelines for Victoria.
Someone has done these...

The Enkei's will be the better wheel I imagine - but i've already done a bunch of research into the VMR 710's (speaking with distributors etc) - they're a good wheel.
There some info over on VWWC that I posted. iirc they are going to be sold locally and a set will run about $1200 (I may be wrong - cant recall). Add tyres and its a good deal.
Well vs the option of a $600 USD a corner BBS CH from tirerack. BBS cant be beat though really.

Outrages!!!! Outrageous with the spell checker there Terrence. I don't want any poke at all, nor do I like the look of the stretched tyre. Spoken at length with Tendy this morning and got my sights set on 235's. I suppose that 8.5" could be doable with a suitable offset and camber adjustments? But this would affect ride, handling and tyre wear? Wheels will be cosmetic for the most part for me.
@ ElisiX - When you compare the additional you are paying for the Enkei's you could get the full package with VMR's. It's a tough call. I'll log over and have a read of your research on VWWC, the only time I log in there is to bag Terrence.

I tend to agree Justin but the VMR wheels are not your typical crap from the local Bob Jane.
Essentially, expensive wheels, cheaper wheels - most are made in the same or similar factories under similar conditions.
I'd have no issues with buying the VMR 710's. However if the CH Black or CH-R suit my GTI or R - I am inclined to go that way.
CH-R w/ PSS10 would be very special IMO.

I'm with you here Justin. But I didn't want to curb what people wanted to do to their own cars. My philosophy has always been you get what you pay for, unless you bargain hard and you get slightly more. Doing things properly the first time would be preferable. However, I think there are different circumstances for each person. Sure some may drive a GTI but they may have pushed the budget out that little bit further to get there. Whilst others may be able to just ask what's the best and get that without a second thought.
I haven't seen many here that have tried to argue that they are getting "fake" rims as opposed to spending the money on originals. It's a tough call, however the gap in "quality" of lesser branded wheels is not so bad that we hear people having problems with them.
It would be more helpful if VW as a brand recognised that certain enthusiasts know their stuff and have an appropriate option for us. Prime example is $800AUD for 1, yes ONE! OEM Omanyt rim. You could easily get an equivalent 18" BBS CH from tirerack for that. But then again, if every GTI/R32 came with BBS CH's would we all not want to upgrade to something even better?
I have 3 rules for buying wheels.
1. Stick with a reputable manufacturer
2. Nothing wrong with new manufacturers for as long as you have done your research, have spoken to the CEO of the company, have customer references and checked their credit history.
3. Get as light of a wheel as you can based on the processing type(ie. cast vs forged et al). However be careful that a super light wheel that is not forged maybe prone to harm on our roads. Very few wheel manufacturers offer super light weight wheels and claim they are as "strong" as a forged wheel.
Choosing a wheel is very subjective and you dont necessarily have to go balls out and get the most expensive. Most expensive is not necessarily the best but one rule rings true. The more exclusive wheel manufacturer you choose, the more you pay.

I can't recall who actually makes the OEM wheels. I agree with Jig in that a reputable manufacturer should be a factor in considering what wheels you will be purchasing. However, this raises the query as to how does one become a reputable manufacturer if you are new to the market. I guess you do this the old fashioned way by making quality product from the start and maintain a high standard on your product.

So back onto the discussion, I personally would rather saving up for some "decent" wheels and doing it right the first time. Of course you need to then take into account how much longer it will take to save up for the right wheel and how long you are planning to keep the car for (no use upgrading in 4 months time if you want to sell in 5 months for example).
What would people consider a fair amount to spend on wheels but still get quality, in terms of looks, size, durability & weight?
My picks are limited to Enkei, BBS and Advan at the moment and size is limited to 18x 8.5 at the larger end of the scale.

Something that i thought about for a while the cost v value for money issue I mean yes you can get great lightweight wheels like the adv 7 wheel but the cost is very high and I prrsonally couldn't see the vfm at that price. I went for an 18x8 ET 50 at around 10kg ea for mid $3000 delivered which to me was a good compromise between weight and cost.
Shame they won't be here now until next week sadly :(
That is a fair enough comment Nath. Good to see what your new wheels will look on your car.
Value for money is a very subjective matter. We can all argue that an R32 is better value for money than an S3 as most options on an S3 are added cost compared to them being standard on an R32. You can also argue that an R8 V10 is better value than a Gallardo considering its the same engine.

Definitey - it's all about taste unless you're after the lightest wheels possible for the best possible performance but even then you're most likely going to get a hot rim as the strongest forged lightweight wheels out on the market are very much respected and desired wheels.
So many people rock heavy 3 piece rims for the look (they're damn heavy but they're so hot!).

Taking that into account then and given at best we get to travel along at 100km/h I wouldn't expect the additional benefit of a few kilograms to play that big a part in day to day performance. If you can, I guess you could go the illektronic example and rock track spec wheels for when you track the car (which would also allow for track spec rubber) and a bling set for everyday driving.
Haven't seen anyone on this forum rocking a set of BBS CK's yet!!! ($300USD odd each at Tirerack is cheap)
I was nudging towards getting BBS CMs before I got the Team Dynamics Racing Pro Race 1.2 (freaking long name) wheels.
The price for a decent set of wheels was just unbeatable!
They used them over in the UK racing circuit (which one exactly I don't remember) back in 2008

Nope not a fan of Rotiform wheels inspired by Lambo's - too busy to the eye but like John mentioned its all subjective :)
Wheels choices are a very personal.
Without looking into performance/weight, wheels can destroy the look of your car or complete the look your car.
Its def something to think about and take your time before splashing on wheels.

@Frenchie - yeah spending spree is correct. Just did a recount of expenses for the past month and budget for next month. $3.3k on roof for house, $1k on clothing last weekend, $1k for guttering for house next week plus whatever it will cost for the headunit and installation. Also forgot about mirror covers and tripod for my camera. Sigh, stupid Melbourne storms. There goes my wheels and coilover budget. Back to square one.

Expensive doesnt always = pretty
Totally agree with this statement (I think the Bugatti Veyron is disgustingly ugly and I'm pretty sure it's expensive) but who said anything about the wheels being expensive? Or anything about expensive items being instantly pretty?
Each to their own for sure though. Personally I think they're dead sexy regardless of price and what makes them even sexier to me is that they're:
- Forged in Japan
- Designed by BBS (I'd say BBS is a pretty reputable brand)
- Lightweight (impressively so too)
- Strong
It's not often you find a stylish rim which is also a performance rim. Yes the CE28 and TE37 has become a much loved JDM rim on a visual level, but if they were of bad quality, heavy and weak that status would never have been reached. I think this wheel is the beginning of a new direction for future lightweight performance wheels which put a lot of value on appearance as well.

Although there is such a thing as "too much TE37", haha. I don't think this wheel is that accessible it will ever be too "played".
I love it, would probably go the LM's still though :)

No-one said anything about expensive wheels before I did. Amazingly I am capable of an original thought :D
But I think people do sometimes put too much focus on the brand/weight of a rim for added street cred moreso than performance. Its no big deal though. If they got the dollars then go for it by all means. Id say that most people see aftermarket wheels as more of a fashion accessory and there are a lot of cheap good looking wheels out there.
Anyways back to the bbs rims. As you say each to their own and I think they look awful!

Yes, more like $5k, maybe more but that's about right for some quality rims in my opinion. Top shelf stuff isn't cheap and your R36 is certainly top shelf! :)

I've been pretty keen on the VMR710 as an alternative to a more expensive BBS setup.
Today I came across these wheels - very similar to the VMR710 but with a potentially nicer finish.
Actually the finish on these is much closer to the original wheel that both of these below are copying - from HRE.

I've emailed them to find out more as they're brand new but they look promising.
And the VMR710

$900 for the set Jay or each? I've sent off a query to them for a price and shipping to Australia. If you are still interested could potentiall be a group buy of 2?
elisiX
26-05-2010, 04:16 PM
It's $575 USD shipped to Australia.
And yes, $900 for the set.
He can get them in Black and Grey painted inside finish.
I am asking him for pics right now actually - real life pictures.

Also, might benefit in terms of shipping to get 2 sets, but if we order 1 set it'll be $900 USD on the paperwork, not over $1000 (no duty).
Another thing to consider is the BBS CK from http://www.amgaustralia.com/specials/
They're doing the 18's for $580 a corner!... now against the option I had above from the USA, $575+$900 USD converted to AUD is about $1800.
So perhaps the BBS wheels would be a no brainer.

So you got quoted $575USD shipping? Ouch.
It does seem like the BBS CK's are an option. BTW BBS CK in Brilliant Silver are only $565 per corner (full RRP I'm assuming).

I won't be running staggered. I have also included that in my e-mail, awaiting a response.
@Jay - The BBS CK's I've quoted are specifically for the R32 per the wheel selector on the AMG website. At a guess you'd still be looking in the vacinity of say $2,500 incl shipping (as I'm not in NSW), unless I can access through Jaxquickfit.

Dom is WABIT off watercooled. Had a super sexy yellow mk1 and now has a bagged B3 passat on Modenas. Loves his wheels!
I'm not sure these are a wheel you would just walk in to a tyre shop and ""buy in my size". I think you find a second hand set )or pay big for new ones from Japan.
Second hand set will require adapters and usually be a lower offset to suit other cars, so the offset is then helped by the width of the adapter to get them flush or a bit of poke. Plus there are all the different combinations of lip/barrel/centre lips too.
A lot of effort required to get these on which makes them so much more impressive ! :)

Well said Mal!!!
My main concern with these RS's is obviously offset fitment, and also brake clearance!! I think Michaelmark5 had to run spacers to clear his brake calipers so i will have to look at that too.
It will be a lot of messing around before any parts are even ordered to start the rebuilding!

Hey now! The Brabus don't look too bad but would be a mofo to clean.

Brabus FTW out of those. Depends, if they are for golfs, probably not. Anything remotely VIP can make lots of those wheels work with width and offset though!!
Agree with all of you as well but these wheels definitely are'nt meant for our VWs. Brabus=Mercs, ABT = Audis especially the R8, AC Shnitzer=Cooper/BMW. I have seen a C63 AMG with these brabus wheels and it looked hot. These are all forged as well and they are super light except for the ABT one. These manufacturers usually only have 1 offset. To make them fit on Euro cars, they simply add spacers which is not illegal in Europe at all. So from a manufacturing perspective, its so much simpler and no doubt save some serious cash flow. Unfortunately after market spacers here in AU are illegal although heard that they can be engineered to be legal...

Those ADV1 wheels look awesome, what style are you getting Jig?
(The they have different names for them etc)?
The ADV 5.1 Single Piece Forged in Satin Matt Black G-Rig. Thinking of getting the same for my wife's R36 but in Brushed aluminium finish.
