Guys do these golf "R"'s have a compass display in the MFD. It says so in the manual but I cant even find the option in the settings.
Am I missing something ?

You need to have the sat nav enabled in the canbus module then it will show up. It's the sat nav menu in the mfd without the rns just shows the compass

I fitted the RNS510 myself, the steering wheel controls all worked so I didn't think I needed to do any coding. Looks like I was wrong.
Will have to so a search and check that all the coding is correct. I have my VCDS but am not experienced at using it yet.

In the Canbus module, long coder there is an option to tick that says Navigation, with this selected it should all show in the MFD with directions and when not in use the compass

Thanks again. Will look into that a little later today and report back.

On mine (factory) you can change What displays in the MFD (e.g. digital speedo, nav) just by using the arrow buttons on the steering wheel. Don't have to change any MFD settings.

yes but if your car doesnt come with the RNS you need to turn that menu path on in the Canbus

Ok guys. A bit of a history. My "R" came with RCD (I think its called) not RNS510. I installed the RNS510 my self. It all seemd to work ok from a radio/stereo/navigation point of view. I did not do any coding with my VCDS. Although I have managed to activate the test menu.
Clearly I need to do all the coding necessary after a RNS510 retrofit.
Since someone must have done this before is there a link somewhere with all the steps.
Chris
Chris, I'll do a quick write up for you with some screenshots.
Check back by 8pm.

Thanks heaps Cam. I know you and I were planing to meet, and I still want to do that. But I am just stuck here on the gold coast looking after my dad. And a bit bored, so would like to use the time constructively.
If you are going to involve photos it might be easier to email me.

From VWW with some additions
1. RNS-510
Open VCDS, then on the home menu select "Select" in the Select Control Module option.

Navigate to 19 - CAN Gateway
http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds/tour/908/select-installed.png
Select the "Coding" option, may be called Long Coding. The pic is from Ross-tech and is the Engine coding area.

So here you need to select Byte 4, represented as the 5th box along with the number 40 in it, the options below will then be displayed, you need to ensure that the check box next to Bit 6 - Navigation is selected (there will be a check box when you do it).
Just a link for now (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=152441.0)

This is all I needed to do on my Mk6 GTI and my R36 to get the RNS MFD display up and running.
So open VCDS and on the main menu

These actions, or similar, are required to activate the menus within the MFD when retrofitting kit such as the RNS and the BT. With the RNS it brings up the menu which has the turn by turn nav, the compass etc, with the BT it will show calls etc etc. If you dont have these options installed at the factory then the car needs to be recoded to display them, this is done by the dealer or someone with VCDS
No worries Chris.
:)
Try these steps below, they should get your compass running.
1. Fire up VCDS and go to here

2. Select option 19. CAN Gateway
http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/VCDSRNS510Coding2/1166364615_jx98U-S.png
3. Select Installation List
http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/VCDSRNS510Coding3/1166364618_Poxiv-S.png
4. Scroll down to option 37. Navigation, tick it and then select Save Coding.
http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/VCDSRNS510Coding4/1166364643_xtG8u-S.png
At this stage it should be functional. Turn the ignition off, then on and see if it shows up. Not sure if the RNS510 requires a reboot but to do that you press the following buttons at the same time < + > + i (thats the case on the earlier model RNS510's, it could be < + > + setup on the newer ones.)
If its still not working, look below:
5. Go back to the module list, this time instead of going to the CAN Gateway go to Option 37. Navigation
6. Head down to Coding then select Long Coding Helper.
As a side note, if you happen to be getting a "Control module not coded" error message showing up when running a diagnostic scan all you need to do is add 12345, 123 and 12345 to the workshop coding as below in my screenshot.
http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/VCDSRNS510Coding5/1166364660_MqARz-S.png
7. In the long coding helper page go to Option A1.
This might be different on your's seeing as its a newer gateway to mine but if its not A1 search for a page within the bits that has a reference to a CAN BAP setting.
http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/VCDSRNS510Coding6/1166364675_gdDJp-S.png
Once you find it if its ticked, untick it...and visa versa if it isn't ticked...tick it. Save the coding changes by going to Exit and then "Do It" on the other page. Reboot the RNS and see how you go.
If it still doesn't show up run a full scan and send me the logfile.
