How I found VWgolf: JF and Suga
I don't own a Golf right now, but I'm a big fan of them and I've driven just about every Golf from the past few years and my impression of them just keeps getting better. Even though it was the most weaksauce of all the GTIs, I do miss my ol' IV GTI. I've spent some quality time with the three- and five-door VI GTI recently, and I'm sure in love with 'em. Not quite sure they're worth the dollar Volks Aus asks for 'em, but I'd sure as hell like to have one.
Hanging out for some time in the Golf R, that's for sure. Looking forward to that one.
Anyway, good to meet some likeminded souls on a VW forum that isn't fugly. Can always rely on JF and Suga to represent good style.

What are you driving atm?
Oh right!
Haha, nothing special at the moment, just a beat-up old '88 Integra. It's a total junker! But I get to drive some pretty sweet cars most weeks, so the 'teg doesn't see that much action really.

Hi all.
Name change for this forum, since I may not have the GTI for much longer :(
Will know Monday lunchtime when the assessors give their verdict on the hail damage. If written off, I'm entitled to a new GTI to replace it since it's under 2 years old, but there's no Latte available and no BG either.
Likely to lose the Jackaroo too, same reason, but no new for old on that one....

OMG NO WAI!
Hope that it all works out for you. There is a GTI in the MkVI range!!!
Must have been pretty serious damage to be a write off. Flooded and all panels gone?
I was wondering how much damage it would have to take to write off a car from hail only.
Good luck

I could be way off the mark here but I think it all comes down to whether or not the roof is damaged. That's what I'd been told, could be wrong.
Did I here someone say TOUREG?????

So you are saying that if the roof is damaged beyond repair that the rest of the car is a write off??? Sounds kind of silly seeing as my car is agreed at $78K!!!!
Tensixty6
11-03-2010, 01:57 PM
$78K, how did you manage that? I would have thought with every conceivable option, the R32 wouldn't be more than high 60's at best. Again, could be wrong.

You just ask what the most they will insure for is, then wait for the difference in annual premium. Turned out to be $100 or so more in the end. I reduced the annual premium by $100 by opting for a $1,000 excess. So in effect insured for $77k or there abouts for annual premium that I am happy to live with.
Given that I do very few K's during the year and look after it I think they are safe taking my money from me each year.
Tensixty6
11-03-2010, 02:48 PM
Well there you go, you learn something every day. I would have expected that such a policy would potentially leave the insurer open to fraud by the wrong sort of people. Scenario....buy a new car for $68K, insure it for $78K and engineer its theft in 6 months time. $10K profit. On the other hand, if they're the ones that determine the amount, so be it.

I hear ya Chris, luckily I'm the straight up type person. There's no way I'd let anything touch my baby if I can help it. As someone mentioned before it's locked up in the bomb shelter!
I've spent far too many days (yes days) on detailing it, keeping it clean, paying for servicing, parking well away from shopping centre idiots (which includes copping crap from the wife for making her walk so far for shopping, go figure) to not be insuring it for less than what it would cost for something similar. Oh and there is no shopping or visits to the shopping centres during Christmas. I've lost my faith in normal human beings to keep their cool when parking during the crazy season.
This is a long termer and each year I will reconsider the amount as it's really not worth paying too much in insurance depending upon the agreed value they provide me.
So for overall cost over 10 years I'll still be in the hole for how much annually I pay to have my car. But hey, in the very unlikely chance (Gerhard's case for instance) that a freak accident occurs, at least I am comforted by the fact that I am covered by insurance.

11-03-2010, 03:09 PM
I hear you, loud and clear. Don't you just love it when you go to Chadstone or Southland or similar, park right away from everyone else and come out after shopping to find some numbnuts parked right next to you. What do they think, my car's going to be lonely or something. It's infuriating.

11-03-2010, 03:17 PM
Oh the worst is those busy periods where ppl just get the passenger to look for a car spot and stand in it!!! I mean WTH? You aren't in 3rd grade anymore pretending to be a car. There's also nothing you can do about it as you'll probably come back with some unwanted speed stripes.
I'm probably the guy on that new insurance add that never claims but pays premiums year on year. "WHAT ABOUT ME?"

Bump - don't be shy
Hey all, thought I'd join before even owning a VW Golf, however myself and a couple of other mates have all ordered the new Golf R , they got the 3 door, I have opted for the 5 door with a few options..
It's a big change for me as I currently own a 500 HP VE SS with great street manners.. But I need something more pratical for work moving forward. After a spin in my mates GTi Mk V I think it is with the DSG (Tuned etc) I was really impressed with these things.. I will miss the torque monster but I know the
new R should be a good replacement..
Here's a pic of my current ride.. (Plz no baggin the V8 as my other mates who ordered R's as well all own one) :)

Hi Peeps!
I'm Mark also known as Woody (primary school nickname that stuck)
I live in Port Melb and have just bought my first VW previously I have driven vintage Volvo and Merc's. I'm loving it so far and looking forward to toying with my new project as it needs some work.
Its a Mark IV 2.0 with a few body issues, rattling door trim and the interior seems to have been used as a kennel recently!
The good parts are its a Golf, only 100k's on it and with a little work will look great. I need some advice on mechanics ie who is good in Melb. Requires new timing belt and servicing etc.
Love the site I found it via google seach along with watercooled but this is obviously more specific and a great forum.
Cheers for the great site and interesting friendly threads
Woody
Any recommendations for panel beating? lowering and then which wheels ?

I got the parents Mk5 serviced there for the first time recently after it doing all the warranty period ones at the dealer. Was the 60k major service and about the same price as the dealer was ripping the oldies off for minor services!
