Looking through and there aren't any write ups for a GT just yet.

So thought I might throw mine into the mix....

Currently have changed/added around the following:
Changed around to stubby antenna
Removed Euro Front plate holder

Couple of pics from when I first got the car to how it looks now....

Thanks for the replies!

Suga I've thought about going darker they're currently 35% might do the rear ones a bit darker (prob 20%) when I get the chance and get some more funds.

Black on Black is a very hard one to pull off! I myself am not a real fan of it, but it didn't come out half bad. Just a real bitch to keep clean.

Had it on the dyno last year putting out 118 atw. I was expecting a bit more.

Although a few days later the engine light came on some of the wiring became disconnected and wasn't performing at its peak.

Paul was wondering where you were!

On another note ran into a hurdle with the intercooler :( no off the shelf intercooler apart from the Forge twintercooler so I'm kind of stuck on ideas...

Hey Paolo,

Took your suggestion, kind of...... Got the grille painted black to match the body :D

Decided to put the engine mods on hold for the time being. Instead looks like I'll grab GTI side skirts and rear valence, and colour code them.
Also am closer to redoing the rear tints to prob 20%
Also looking at putting R32 brakes onto the GT.

Once that's done hopefully there will be some sort of stage 2 available!

also have R32 Front brake upgrade on order as well :D

Just a quick update.

Now have a GTI colour coded rear valence on :D looks great (thanks to Ben for getting me out of trouble putting the damn thing on)

Will have the R32 Front brake kit next week sometime and also getting some goodridge SS brake lines, instead of the supplied ECS lines.

Decided on Blue for the calipers as I want to do some colour coding in the engine bay :D

Hey Tom,

Lookin good!

From an engine perspective, in your shoes I would:

1. Leave the stock intercooler, I've tested mine extensively and it performs magically for everyday street driving. Inlet heat soak at the lights is by far a bigger real world issue. Thermal wrap the inlet / shield it, circulate air at idle.
2. Put a water spray onto the IC, A crude windscreen washer is even a big improvement over nothing. Do the "Polar" alloy ducting mod to the intercooler core, made it difficult to see much over ambient with normal driving whereas stock you'd typically see 10 degrees plus. Coupled with a water spray, you'd only get IC heatsoak on a track day.
3. Pull the insulation around the supercharger. Retains heat, and more importantly, supercharger whine!
4. JFE stock airbox lid ( or similar ) on stock element. Anything to remove the sharp 90 degree bend in the stock lid, then pull the MAF grid. PLEASE ditch the big lower leaf grid under the element in the stock airbox!!
5. I've read somewhere that the twincharger runs very high EGT's ( Exhaust gas temps ) stock. Water Meth would be my number one recommendation as a great way to go, gain power everwhere AND drop the EGT / thermal loads. A Snow stage two, or Devils own boost only referenced setup would be just fine, EGT as well like I have is really overkill. I've seen secondhand Snow stage 2's go on e-bay usa for $200-$300 US! The only downside is Methanol being a skin absorbed accumulative poison. Pour carefully!
6. Ditch at least the rear pancake muffler, and then turn your attention to a bigger dump pipe, where it matters most. I'd replace the remaining muff with a decent jap straight through unit if you really wanted a good bang for buck system, and yes, you can put a 3" muff into a 2.5" exhaust, muffs usually being by far the biggest restriction post turbo.

But that's just me....

GTom
08-05-2010, 05:44 PM
1. I get a bit of heatsoak on days 30 deg + which is w
2. That's tooo Polar for me lol
3. I've tried believe me! Just couldn't get the cover off after an hours worth of trying!
4. I'm looking at an after market CAI
5. Don't put ideas into my head please Greg!!!!! I've sent something to Snow Performance about it...
6. Exhaust I'm still waiting around to see what the tuning companies come out with if anything.....

Paul_OH
10-05-2010, 01:02 AM
Greg, #4 above - what is the JFE airbox lid/mod? I've done a google search but couldn't find anything?

Tom, drive over and I'll do the Supercharger insulation removal in 10mins, I'm just around the corner! Access is really shite but once you know how to do it it literally took me 10-15mins incl probing around a bit.
Disclaimer: for those who think us TSI drivers must be a bunch a Mr Magoos, the Supercharger is basically inaccessible between the block and the firewall, surround by at least an inch of acoustic foam then encased in a box similar to the factory airbox!! VW never wanted us to find it LOL!

I have to agree that heatsoak in the TSI is absolutely atrocious. The route I drive each day is on the Eastern side of Perth and highway speeds interspersed with traffic lights. In summer I'm sure a 1.6 FSI would leave me for dead at the lights after sitting for 2-3 minutes - it's literally that bad! After 5 mins at highway speeds things seem to be back to normal but it's shocking.

Sorry aFe is the brand, but it looks like a great"stock" looking mod, easy to do, and is well designed in my opinion - solves all the poblems in the stock system without increasing noise or breaking warranty or rules.

Heaven forbid ANYONE thought ill of the TSI "crew"...

Paul_OH
10-05-2010, 12:25 PM
Thanks Greg (and sorry for the hijack Tom). The AFE is nice bit of kit however I notice that the TDI & TSI have a different airbox setup as the TSI airbox has its outlet facing the firewall negating the need for the 90 degree bend.

Greg Roles

Whilst this is a bit of a hijack, it also follows Tom's interest in an airbox / inlet. From all I've read, looked at and thought about, the one big glaring flow problem between the air inlet and the turbo is the 90 degree bend in the lid. The TSI is indeed better than the TDI in that the inlet from the front of the car goes directly to the passenger side of the airbox, across the filter element to the drivers side outlet - where the 90 degree I'm talking about is located. The TDI comes in and exits the same side, with a looped inlet pre airbox, which isn't as clever in my opinion, bends the air more and probably uses "less" of the element if you follow my logic.

The aFe, carbonio, forge, BMC etc all do away with this 90 degree, straight flow pods being the best, but if it's not sealed to the front of the car, and is drawing ANY engine bay heat at all, it's a backwards step in anything but highway driving. There's a great hole behind the passenger headlight leading to the bumper space behind the passenger side fog light area, and opening up the garnish or upgrading to the R-line spec garnishes with removable backs would be an ideal area to draw cold air from.

Awesome work there Tom :) Your GT absolutely trumps mine in the looks department!

One thing I've noticed though, is that with the fitting of the GTI bumper, it results in our exhaust tailpipes being less exposed. So it seems like they've been pushed back in a bit. I know it's something minor but because it occurs, I know it would bug me since I really like the exposed tips. This is why I'm a bit reluctant to change mine. Although without a doubt, after colour coding it still looks heaps better than the stock one.

My intercooler temps are never more than 10 degrees above ambient and they quickly drop to within 5 degrees as soon as you start moving for 20 seconds or so. My radiator water temps dropped from a solid 88 to 86-87, indicating that the car can't even get the water up to FULL temp even without the fans on, thats how much difference the sealing of the intercooler surrounds make.

If you prefer buying an aftermarket intercooler that will only slightly improve on my $12 bit of aluminium sheet and some foam, be my guest! :O>D

BELOW is the excellent work Cogdoc did doing the bottom half of my mod in a high quality way.
