Help! Fumes!

Hey guys. Iv already put this question in my introduction thread but I thought it wouldnt harm to ask in the mk4 section.

So I picked up my first car a few weeks ago, its a 02' 1.6L SE. The previous owner apparently 'blew' the engine and the mechanic rebuilt it to sell. He said he replaced a majority of the engine but I dont know any of the details. It seems to drive fine, but the problem is after about 20min driving the engine starts giving off a strong fume smell. Stopped at the lights with the fan on, the cabin fills up quick and you have to drop the windows to breath. I took it back to the mechanic and he said he couldnt find anything wrong. He said he couldnt even smell the fumes! Is it all in my head?!

Please, if anyone has any suggestions, let me know! I'm desperate to get rid of this smell

Hi SEIV,

Doesn't sound right. I would get a second opinion from another mechanic. You should have some warranty to get in resolved.

Yeah I actually took it our usual mechanic today and he said he could hear an exhaust leak. So I went back to the mech I bought the car off and he said he'd replaced all the exhaust piping/tubing behind the engine so it couldnt be a leak...
Looks like im not getting anywhere with this guy so I guess I''ll get my mechanic to try and fix it.
