'Normal' coolant levels?

Hi guys,

took my new GTI (650k's) for a run down to melb, ended up just being an extremely boring drive.. lol

Just a question regarding coolant levels in the overflow tank

I checked the level the morning after I arrived in Melbourne and it was sitting about 4mm about the MIN level marking, I opened up the cap and the coolant level rose to almost the full indicator.

I checked it again this evening after arriving back to Sydney and same deal, it was sitting about 4mm above MIN, opened up the cap and it rose well above the FULL level marking

I just checked it again this morning after a 10min drive (just after shutting the engine off) and it was a couple MM below full.

So is it normal for the coolant to be up and down like this? and the only accurate reading is generally after a short drive?
