I just can't use one of those... It would just destroy my AM radio reception!

19-03-2010, 10:32 PM
hahah a nice start justin ... Future mods looked promising xD hahahah
I had stubbie antenna before from a friend, i found that radio transmission is reduced. I swapped it with my brother, since he doesn't listen to the radio anyway.
PS: good luck with selling your beautiful skyline :)
farout 10d... dats cheap :S lol

If you pick up an '05 GTI you won't need that.
Yeah the 05's have it inbuilt into the rear window.
Makes it look a lot cleaner. Wonder why they did away with it.
:p
Its nice to see you're planning ahead Justin haha!
You'll never guess what happened this morning. I pulled GT5 Prologue out and had a quick game on the PS3 before work.
I havent played it for about 6 months. Anywhoo... I was going through my garage (Evo 8, rx8, Ford Focus ST...................then.......2005 Golf GTI in white) lol!!
I bought my car in game long before I even contemplated getting a GTI.
:)

:p
I was just looking at my parents 05 the other day and thinking the same.
I love my stubby antenna and didn't notice any loss in FM reception (don't listen to AM so cant comment).

Yeah the stubby antenna does affect AM, however it looks much better that stock so I live with poor AM.....

You could probably set up 4 chairs in the living room, put the gauge holder on a table in front of you with the stubby antenna on your head and picture yourself driving your new car.
Any bites on the sale?

Hehe cheers guys. It's pretty funny (to me anyways).
OK my 4th modification:

Thanks to Tendy, who gave this to Christina (but it didn't fit her R32) I have this DSG transmission mount. It's not actually a mount though? Can someone tell me exactly what this thing is called?! Takes all of 2 minutes to install and it's a really smart design whatever it is.
1st mod is still coming, waiting so I can take pics of it first :)

27-03-2010, 11:04 AM
looks to me like a torque arm insert? i have one on my car, reduces engine movement and increases shift times and puts the power better to the floor. Could be wrong thou because the rubber mount looks abit short
Justin Fox
27-03-2010, 11:07 AM
Ah that's it Paolo. I just did some research on it, seems like a smart modification to me, the more raw the better (I'll need engine mounts too!).

That link shows a pic of the one Tendy gave me so I assume it's a "Superpro" insert. It's visibly a lot shorter than the other brands, so I assume it's perhaps not as effective as the other 2?
Justin, I've got the VWR mounts on my car now. Responsive but you can feel a lot of vibration during idle.

dude it's cool you are anticipating your new GTI with mods but i would like to throw caution to the wind. please don't put more money down until you get the GTI. good chance the GTI you get may already have mods that you like or you might change your mind later.
i've got a few spare bits and bobs for my mkV GTI. RCD500 mp3 oem stereo system, complete oem intercooler from a mkv gti (new); front honeycomb grill from GTI. let me know if you need any of them once you've bought your car.
good luck dude.

How's the search going Justin?
Are there many decent ones around 25k? Not many show up on carsales, cheapest is $27k but in this market can always offer a few thousand less.
My mate bought a nice white one with sunroof+leather with low km for $34k..
Looks like we got a new addition to the family! :)

OH YEAH!
Today I called Barloword to see if they were open, they were, so Christina and I dropped in to check out a MKV GTI I've had my eyes on for the last couple of days.
The car looked very tidy on the outside for a 2005 model, not so bad on the inside either. The gear knob had a bit of wear, the inner door handles and steering wheel controls did too but it was just general wear and tear. It had the non-leather interior (fine by me as I'll most likely strip it anyways ) and a sunroof (crap, extra weight ) and Bi-Zenon headlights .
The used car salesman was a little ordinary until he heard Christina's exhaust (he wanted to hear it). Christina gave it 3 blats and his reaction was dead set hilarious. He was in shock and once he started moving he literally had to shake the goosebumps out of his arms!
We took the MKV GTI for a test drive, car felt great, drove straight, not a single rattle to be heard inside and no suspension noises whatsoever. Engine felt strong and the DSG shift was lighting fast like the new MKVI was.
Everything just felt right. I've followed a fair few GTI sales from Barloworld lately. It seems like a LOT of people are trading in their MKV GTI's for MKVI's and Barloworld sell them off for as low and sometimes lower than people do in private sales (goes to show how powerful they are as a dealership). We got back to the dealership and went inside to cut a deal, 3 months warranty was all I can get for it (no extended warranty options). Everyone was in good spirits and I got the car down to $30k (perfect) without any hassles.
The sales guy was still excited about Christina's exhaust "I love your car!". He brought his store manager out to hear Christina's exhaust (it was no longer about me wanting to pay for the GTI lol!). He freaked out hard when she told him it cost $7k, he was going on about that for a bit but once she hit it he changed his tone completely and said he'd buy one too! (GOLD). He then proceeded to notice all the modifications on the car and pay many complements.
We went in to pay a deposit on the car and on our way out the sales manager was still outside checking out Christina's car, he had his camera out now and was taking pics of it. Made Christina's day. I'm happy too, will be picking up the car on Tuesday when the banks open. :)
PS: Both the sales guy and the manager were very well aware of AP's beast too! :>

Too funny with Suga's exhaust. Would have loved to have been there to see the look on his face.

OK here's the weight breakdown. I've broken the rear seat down into separate components (it's 3 pieces).
Weights:
Antenna: -20g
Golf Manual: -818g
Tool kit: -3.78kg
Parcel tray: -1.82kg
Rear floor: -1.62kg
Rear seat bottom: -4.96kg
Rear single seat back: -6.46kg
Rear double seat back: -17.48kg
Spare wheel: -14.34kg
----------------------------------
51.29kg
I'll be adding some more weight back in as I'll be carrying a puncture repair kit and pump or maybe just a can of goop, we'll see. I'll stop here for today, got to know the car a little more today which is always fun. PS: She spins the wheels hard on boost in 2nd gear in the wet huh?! Caught me by surprise last night!

Hey plush toys and stickers are fun too
OK I'm going to let everyone in on what I'm looking into:
- Lighter exhaust (Full Ti).
- Deka Battery.
- Lighter front seats (I have to weigh a stock seat to be sure this one's worth it).
- Carbon bonnet.
- Lighter wheels.
Suspension:
I've bought a set of PSS10's off John a while back. He's yet to take them off his car but hopefully I can get them off his car and onto mine in a week or so. :> I'll be sure to weigh them against the stock gear too (I assume they will be lighter).
Deka Battery:
I've worn out a Deka battery before. They are tiny and made for motorbikes (Harley's actually). I killed it because I put it in the GT-R which I didn't drive much. I'm assuming it will be fine in a car I use as a daily driver though.
Seats:
I'm a huge fan of bucket seats, really deep and tight fitting ones at that so I might get a pair but I'd only do this if they were significantly lighter than the stock seats (I'm pretty sure they would be. I'll have to weigh up a stock seat + rail ASAP).
CF Bonnet:
I'm not sure if it's going to be significantly lighter than the stock bonnet. I am hoping it will be but I have no idea on weights. Since the car is black, a CF bonnet shouldn't gain too much more attention. It would be great to take more weight off the front of the car too.
Wheels:
I am having a hard time finding wheels with aggressive offsets. I am hoping to get 18x9 +35's on there but going custom on a set of Rays CE28's is not an option which is a real bummer. I might end up having to settle for 18x8 +45/50's as that seems to be the common size for VW's.
stephen8512
07-04-2010, 07:17 PM
hey justin! with the rear seats, did u take it out to just weigh how mch they are or are they off the car permanently? wouldnt it be a bit noisy in cabin for a daily? (of course NOTHING compared to your GTR :D)

Re: front end weight. Seibon in the US do carbon fibre fenders which are also 10mm wider.
Re: wheels. 9" and ET35 is a big no go on the front of a MKV. I used to run 9" ET49 which gave 1-2mm strut clearance and 2-3mm of poke in the front and quite flush in the rear. ET35 would be massive poke!

Sounds and looks good Justin. Will be following this thread closely!
Justin Im running 19x8.5 ET46, and these have given me some grief, despite having the front guards roll. The rears rub with passengers in the back and wehn driving very fast corners, so do the front, but only on the Fender lining. Im considering ordering some team dynamics 18x8 et45.
The front seats weigh about 38kg from memory. I took the passenger one out when I did the stereo, and faark it was heavy. Thats for leather though.
In terms of bucket seats, the Recaro pole positions are about 8kg each and come in a nice leather too, or you can just get the re-trimmed if you know someone, which might work out cheaper. JohnnyC at golfmkv had them, check out his thread:
http://golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72595&highlight=johnnyc
And the seats:

http://golfmk5.com/forums/showpost.php?p=1657590&postcount=179
I reckon you should get a rollcage too, like this:

http://golfmk5.com/forums/showthread.php?t=99536&highlight=schroth
Anyway let me know what buckets you decide on, I might be interested too, as I think Ive decided against getting a GTR for the time being, and turning the GTI into a daily driven track car, then later getting a GTR or maybe even a Formula V.

You don't muck around Justin, didn't take long for the diet to commence!
I thought when i had the spare and seats out that the car felt slightly faster, but it was probably a placebo effect. I'm sure it all helps though :).
Don't think the car would start if you left it for more than a few days with the small battery, but prob not an issue for you (all the electronics and sensors drain the battery a bit).

Yes they will stay out, extra noise? I live for it! If I ever needed them to go back in it's just a 10 minute job.

Cheers for this info Tim. I'm now thinking 18x8 +35. Enkei RPF1's are available but damn they look weak (need more aggressive offset to make them look nicer in shape). I might end up settling for 18x8 +45's in the end of the day, maybe run a 10mm bolt on spacer if there is such a thing for VW PCD.

Those Recaro's look awesome. Thanks for the weight info saad. I know race buckets are super light but the rails are usually heavy. I'm a huge fan of the Recaro SPG, fits me perfectly so I might look into them. I've already found a lot of info regarding the airbag/warning lights regarding seats too, should be AOK to sort out (I hope!).
just for the record 18x8 ET35 would still be a couple mm of poke. Would work if youre not scared of stretching tyres and a little bit of scrub. Most newer golf owners tend to be a bit ummm how can I put it. Uber-conservative :D
Justin you seem like a function over form guy, so dont go lower than ET45. 18x8 ET45 is perfect from what i hear, and thats what my team dynamics will be

That's what everyone says, and i assume the same wheels/tyres would on a GTI (although they are 5mm higher aren't they?). Not worth going too agressive unless you are about show and not go. ET45 sits nice and flush with the fenders (may poke out very slightly but if you're lowered 30mm like i was the rims are in due to the camber).

As long as you dont mind it scrubbing heaps on the track, but assume you'd get the guards rolled and pulled. Also if you have rock hard suspension perhaps the travel wont be as much so it may not scrub?
Full on raw, dude. You can weigh my bonnet when it comes before you make your decision.

GBJ-R32 - Offsets do my head in as well, they do so with every car I buy but the research usually pays off and in most cases I'm happy I go against the grain, against the recommended sizes in the catalog, and go for something aggressive. Sure, there's more work in getting them to fit (no scrubbing/rubbing) but the satisfaction of having them look and work better is well worthwhile.
There are lots of offset calculators online, and even more guides on what all the numbers mean. I've not got any links in my bookmarks but I'm hoping someone else on here does.

Gauges I ordered the new Defi-Link Advance in black and wheels I ordered some Advans which are cast but light enough (lighter than forged TE37's so I'm happy). Advan are releasing forged wheels later this year but I just can't wait and I'd expect the forged rims to be a lot more expensive too.

Yup there's a bit of tar in there but I won't be removing it. I only saved about 2kg or so in removing the tar on the GT-R. It's a horrible job and you can't exactly undo it either.
but Germaan tar might be a bit heavier >D

I have a feeling my car has been chipped already. It revs up to 6500rpm before self shifting, is this normal?
In any case guys I am (right now) not after more power. In my opinion there's heaps of power there, much more than an MX-5 or Honda Civic but the car is a lot heavier than those 2 cars. Making a car handle better before making more power is always where it's at for me  Maybe I'll just have to impress you guys with a killer lap time over other GTI's making twice as much power? :>
OK a small update. I dropped in to JDMyard today to buy a Honda Wiper Delete plug but it turns out the plug Yonas has in store is different to the plug I had in mind. His one is metal and it's $30. I bought it anyway and I've made it work, but I doubt it's going to be as watertight as the simpler rubber grommet I've used in the past (see image below).
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2515/4131390535_0dc280f294_o.jpg
The rubber grommet/plug I had on the ED.
I'll leave it as is for now. I'll grab one of the above rubber grommets from Honda Parts ASAP. Here's what I've done so far:

I had to get into MacGuyver Mode. I scrounged around the man cave and found a few good bits: An allen key bolt, a red washer made of rubber, something you would find in the plumbing section at Bunnings. A carbon bicycle headset spacer and also a carbon fibre bicycle stem top cap.

I've done a leak test with a hose and it's all good but I don't feel 100% on the seal so I'll buy some silicone ASAP and seal the underside properly.

Just read this thread, nice work Justin!
Mind, $30K for an 05, that sort of money might've tickled our interest on Mrs Lima's 3dr GTI (Aug 06 build). It's just about to go in for its 45K service. Would've expected 05s to be selling for mid 20s (or less).

Yes tested with hose, no leaks but still would like to use some silicone before putting the boot trim back on just to be 100000% sure. And it shifted at 6500rpm pedal to the metal, is that normal? I feel like Suga's car shifts earlier (then again it's not a GTI).

im sure the that gti is fine with shifting at 6500 is that the start of redline on the gti's or half way through
The chipped ones will do 7,000 normally. Depending on tune. It is hard to tell since a non chipped DSG will shift by itself around 6,500. You can ask fellow GTI owners to drive your car to find out.

Also a question for all DSG GTI owners. When you put the car in drive mode (auto mode) and you then hit a paddle on the steering wheel, does it change into DSG mode? Mine does and it surprised me. As soon as I come to a stand still it automatically goes back into Drive/Auto mode.
I know you can use the paddle shifters in Sports Mode on Christina's R32, but Christina says it doesn't do it in Drive Mode?

You can use the shifters in D (and S) and it will revert to 'Manual' mode, if you slow down without shifting, or don't use them for a period of time it reverts back to D automatically.
Thats what my Mk6 does and to my knowledge its the same for all DSGs, but I may be mistaken.

100% Tendy. I never drive other people's cars too hard. Even on track, just can't do it and yes, my car runs out of puff big time at about 4500/5000.
I'll just leave it at this then: I have to now assume that my car is indeed dead stock but having said that, damn I'm impressed! I love it.
- She's plenty fast as is from A-B.
- The DSG shifts 'feel' more aggressive and faster than all R32 DSG's I've driven.
- She's invisible to most.
- She's easy to park into tight spots.
- She's agile and great at taking gaps in traffic.
- She just needs to lose a little more weight ;)

You'll all know soon enough :)
I've just put an order in with Ian too for a few things :>
I've set my budget to $10k max on top of the $30k car so I've got to be a little careful with mods. I'll be honest and say that I was seriously considering a full titanium Fujitsubo Exhaust from Japan. It makes only a little more power, less noise that stock but saves a massive 6kg over the stock system. The price translates to $5000AUD and that's without shipping and taxes. I'd expect it to be more like $6500+ landed. That would have blown heaps of my budget so I've erased it from my list of potential mods unfortunately.
I've looked into sway bars from all the manufacturers out there and I've decided to go for the bigger H&R's. They're twice the price of everything else out there. It hurts me a lot to pay so much for these as I've never paid anything close to this for some sway bars on any Japanese cars I've owned in the past but I like that you never have to grease these up (touch wood) and I have to admit I do trust H&R quality.

I like where you are going with this car Justin. Loosing all that weight so that you can get better laps for a FWD drive car is a good strategy. It can however back fire on you. The stock MKV GTI even when driven hard, does not torque steer which is just amazing compared to its rivals. Having the weight loss however might introduce some torque steer. I dont know, just saying. Putting more power on a car that has had a diet lately will make this car less of a daily driver I would think. Once your done with the weight loss, time to get the suspension sorted out and with the loss of weight and a finely tuned suspension, it could potentially be a good daily car and an excellent track car. NO doubt about that.
Congratulations on your new car.
How about DADI?
Would look great next to SUGA.

I could be wrong but I read somewhere that Seibon parts are not a perfect fit for the Golfs? With CF, it has to be a perfect fit because if you have to force, pry certain angles to get it installed, the CF will be under pressure and will start crack over time. I am happy to be corrected on this though.

what 10d said! seeing as you don't plan to tune your car, the next best option is to order a wayne angle block or o2 spacers and attach them to the downpipe to prevent them from appearing, but like saad explained you gain the most benefits with a tune.
btw very schnazzy plates! you get my approval >D

Cheers Paolo. I'll look into CEL issues IF I get a CEL. Will paint the borders properly (prep, clean, mask and spray) tomorrow and take better pics (car is dirty!).
