Hi guys if you haven't read my info on the introductions. I have just migrated to this forum via JDMST and have purchased my first car a VW MK III CL Golf :)

Hoping to achieve/learn a whole load more on this forum about my car and also guidance in learning about the automotive scene.

Gotta love having the same format as JDMST makes thing easier :)

As everyone knows i've stalked these forums for about a year now and have loved it ever since. Not knowing anyone and just reading about peoples cars and progress has made me fond of an interest in cars. And now it's an obsession. If i hear a car rumble like killer wasps in an exhaust drive by i will automatically look no matter what.

Even though i may not know much about cars yet, we all start somewhere. True ?

So i've been thinking about buying my first car ever since i was in high school. And during the last years of high school having all my friends owning and driving on there P's with there OWN cars.... made me want a car even more.

This gave me the motivation to figure out a way to make some money and save up for a car. At this time i have finished my HSC (2010) and straight away found a job then slowly saved my way to buy a car but finding a car is always hard and fustrating. Throughout Years i have focused my mind in cars and have always changed my thoughts on cars like women on clothes.

All of my friends drive Honda's... Like literally 90% of them own a honda of some kind. Even the girls.

THIS MADE ME HATE HONDA's. I don't have a strong hatred but a dislike in it being such a typical car. The cars that i'd been thinking about getting first was always a daily. I wasn't a kid thinking about driving a R32 GTR or a 180SX or something because i knew enough to know i don't need a fast car atm and just need a car to drive around.

Kinda makes things hard when you live far away from your friends and family.

After a long time saving up money Last week on the 22/03/11 I went to go check out a car that i saw on an ad on gumtree with RR-04-RR ( Yuan ). he was kind enough to take me there to check it out even though he'd only met me twice ( Thanks heaps ! ) because of him i grew fond of the car and for what the seller was selling it for i wouldn't have thought otherwise.

After negotiating with him i managed to purchase my first car.

The first people to know about the car was the spam crew after meeting up with them later that day. And they congratulated me with the new car.

The next week ( this week ) i had one of my good mates to drive me down to pick up my car. He was kind enough to come with another mate of mine to drive all the way (cabramatta - blacktown ) to drive it home ( minto ).

And now she sits at home on the kerb side of the road.

Yup this is my first car. A Volkswagen Golf CL MK3. Just read that CL's were short lived. Wonder why O_O.


I honesty can't really tell you much about the specs because i don't know much about it.

All i know is that ..

- 5 Door hatchback
- 5 speed manual
- power steering
- 14-15" random rims.
- almost gone tread
- Immboliser
- Central locking
- Carby 1.6L OR 1.8L 4 Cylinder ?

Can't really tell you much more unless you know . I don't know much engine wise but more exterior and interior wise. But overall the car is pretty stock and i wouldn't have it any other way.

Why A golf you ask ?

Well my original thoughts on a car to get was either a Mitsubishi Mirage/Lancer OR a Honda... yeah i know .. a honda ( no hating ).

But yeah Literally two days after the listing it was mine and im happy !!


After all that saving up i finally could afford a car.. of my own.. feels so satisfying but yet also brings a tear to my eyes that i actually accomplish something worth value to me.

Well.. the only downside right now is that the rego is going to die soon so i can't get my P's in a few weeks. IF YOU GUYS have noticed im still on my L's YAYERRRR.

So name has been transferred and is now in my name. So at least i know shes mine FOR REALZZZ brocuz.

Okay , After coming home today i wanted to wash my car as she's kinda dirty but my mom said i shouldnt and is going to be dirty again any ways, so i'll wash it another time, no rush.

There was an ugly Sticker on the back of the hatch saying " hatchback World "

So yeah got some of that GOO off and when i was checking the back the .. top bit where you put the speakers in i forgot what it's called was pretty bent. Tried bending ti back but didn't do nothing will proberally fix it some other time no hassle.

When i purchased the car the only MAIN thing he told me was that he's wife had a little accident nothing major to the rear bumper and his wife never drove it since. This is what it looks like now.

But overall loving this car. And after about 15 mintues outside storing a few times i learnt to reverse park LOL !

But yeah this is just the beginning just going to re-rego the car and insurance and get my P's then the real story will begin.

DAY #2 Of work !

Came home today to see my car sitting there all sad :(

I took her for a little spin around the block. While driving driving to figure out how to drive manual slowly got to understand how to drive it.

didn't store once !! i was pretty impressed considering no one taught me manual and once i got it around once... my dad had woken up from his nap and all i see is his finger pointing at me. As i saw him and got to the kerb... i stored in shock and sadness. Got a mad lecture after that but OH WELL SO WORTH IT ! :cool:

After being told off... I gave her a wash :)

Some Detergent and rain water ! Saving money and helping the environment counts. :)

Just another reminder for myself things i need to fix before i go for my P's :

- New Tires ( dead tread )
- Fix the left break light
- Clip to open the door in the passenger side. ( can't let the instructor stick outside :( )

Also, CL = 1.8 4cylinder 8 valve engine. Mate's got a silver two door CL, but the stooge has an auto licence and can't really drive it until he gets his greens in like a month. Ha. :lol:

Okay today's update. 4/4/11

Raver , Kay , Dustin and i took a trip to supercheap ! so that we could have a minor service on my car.

Went inside and the guy we asked for help for fluids literally just grabbed everything we needed. i was like O_O with all these things in my hand.

So we got ALMOST everything we needed.

Only thing we were missing out of the fluids was just the transmission oil, and power steering which apparently only the dealer has which they don't sell. But also didn't have any spark plugs because apparently the ones for my one were $80 for 4 !!! when you could buy normal ones for $4.50 so.. maybe next time. haha.

Also another thing we bought was some degreaser. Always come's in handy for use.

So we brought everything back to my place to get ready for the service.

First thing first is safety. jacking the car up. I didn't have any jacks so i borrowed one off Jamie and one in my brother's camry. :lol:

Before we even got to jack up the car Kay was suppose to drive it down the hill were it was so instead he took it for a drive down the road with almost no engine oil .

After jacking up the car, we had to find an oil tray so that we could remove all the old oil BUT my dad didn't have one so we had to improvise with a bucket. Luckily the bucket was the right size just to fit.

So once we got underneath the car we took a 20 socket to remove the screw out to drain the fluid. Only problem was that we couldn't remove the screw.

After constant struggling we didn't end up taking the screw out.

After trying and trying to remove the screws by force we found out that the actual screw it self went from a hexagonal shape to a more rounder shape. MEANING... it couldnt be twisted any way anymore...

So then after all that frustration, we left the car there for tomorow so we could try again.

Today's update ! 5/4/11.

Wasn't much to do today at first. Was waiting from a call from kay to come over and help me try to take out that bolt again with his jack stand but he didn't end up coming. so today's plan was adjusted. Instead i finally got the time to clean my car .. INTERIOR CLEAN !

Before cleaning i remembered that i didn't have any interior shots yet. Here's 2 pics of the back seats and front . There stock and the way it should be ... for now :)

While taking these pictures i found that the interior trimming was falling apart and the glue to stick it on was falling off.

Something i should fix. I was thinking maybe just replacing the whole top trimming aswell as the door trims while im at it. BUT i could just buy that spray glue and re glue it together. Another time though !

Before i got to clean anything i had to take out my parcel tray because it was annoying me because it was so bent.

I lifted up my engine bay and also rechecked my OEM Filter pod. Looked inside, it wasn't as dirty as i expected and then just put it back in because it looked fine :)

While i got all these things the mail man came and gave me a parcel . It was my Lens hood. Will come in very handy in the sunlight.

Cleaning time ! As most of my friends cars (EG's) and seeing most of them come off the car i couldn't do it with this one and i didn't need to because as you can see it pulls straight off and you can get into the actual soles of the car without physically removing the whole rear seats. Quite awesome how it all folds out like a fold out couch.

Using methylated spirits while diluting it with water i tried to remove as much dust/grainy molecules so that it would be clean and shiny. Vaccuming the car may have been the biggest bitch out of it all. The car was filled with sand, everywhere ! So no matter where i vaccummed the sand would still be there. I also found a sticker underneath the rear seats.

Yup you guessed it as much as i did. Proberally surfers or beach people. The original owners came from bondi somewhere i think so it makes sense. But nethertheless my car still has sand even after vaccumed :(


After vaccuming that sucker, i used Kittens Foam interior cleaner.

And applied it on all of the seats and dried them up after would. It's snowing !!

While vaccuming was over i noticed my Speaker covers were rusted and fading (refer to first picture of post).... DIY PAINT JOB !!

Took off the covers and look at the speakers. OEM peeled and dying speakers :cool:

rubber seals were pretty much torn off too. Will replace with new speakers later on.

Took it off and took some touch up paint in black :) Not sure on the specifics of black.

Took some mega grit paper and attached to a block of something and sanded down the covers. Rust still shows after sanding but the rust reduced to a minimal.

I managed to do about 3-5 coats and put them back on.

While waiting for each coat i got bored and i saw one of my rear mudflaps was missing the VW logo in white.

Took a bit of sticky tape and some white spray paint and...

FAIL ! Came out totally ugly :lol: Oh well !

The reason it doesn't look right was because i didn't read the label properly.

Also managed to remove some of the liquid paper from the previous owner which tried to cover up the bad spots + rust =.= what peson liquid papers on a car ?!?!

Okay this was properly the most hardest and most wanted things i really want to do / fix with the car. THAT BROKEN REAR BUMPER ! I finally got to doing it today. I realised that the bumper would properly be best to be replaced but Screw that DIY RE ALIGNING !

If you haven't already read in the above post of mine, the previous owner's wife had a bit of an accident with the rear bumper hence the sale of protecting the kids. It wasn't too bad, just a crack here and there but seems all fine.

This is what it looked like when i bought it and how it is.

After fiddling with it and opening it to figure out a way to put it together i saw a rather interesting piece which didn't look like it was in it's right place. Reached it and took it out.

I sat there thinking what this actually was.. After fiddling some more i found out that this is the piece which actually joins together the bumper to the actual car itself being in it's right position.

As you can see in the third picture on the left hand side it has been ripped and also has been ripped out of it's original place hence it been fallen out.

I could only think of one thing to do to put it back together after numerous occasions trying to hook it back up on its hook,

So i took the drill and drilled a hole where appropriate.

Put in the Cable tie (ran out of black after a few tries)

After a long day i decided to just give my windows a clean with fake windex and rims using black night wheel cleaner.

The day was finally over and decided it was time to pack up for another time as the sun was also going down because of that gay daylight savings. GAY !!

I too have the Mk3 CL as my first car. Iv rebuilt, wrecked, painted, cleaned, fixed and looked at every single nut, bolt, washers and fixture on my car. They are an awsome rig and great to learn on.

This is mine: (In about phase 2)

Here is some advice I can give as a CL owner and lover. (In order of priorities)
- Replace the rubber mount between the TB and inlet manifold (I garuntee yours will be leaking)
- Good suspension is a must (coilovers or cup kit)
- Some good pads and fluid will tranform that standard brakes (I have EBC green stuff and do trackdays and they are fine)
- What ever you do dont get a pod filter, it loses low down power and sounds horrible (Like really really homo)
- 2" cat back exhuast with high flow mufflers will make it sound good and give some good low down power. (Sounds awsome too)

If you are coming to the VW natinals in Sydney in May ill be there and more than happy to have a chat, I wont have my Mk3 there as we are bringing the Mk1 racecar up but always keen to help a brother out.

I only have one main problem that i hate, my car has that early start which you have to warm it up to keep it alive.

IE being when just turning the car on you have to keep your foot on the accelerate to keep it from dying it's fudged ! But yeah will do those things !

Not a bad little first car. I like your style, clean it & service it first. Those wheels aren't the best but i reckon paint the centres black & they'll look better. Or you could do a wheel swap with you're friends MX5 or Civic as they're all the same bolt pattern, 4x100.

You though of exactly what i was giong to do !!

Paint the centres black and leave the lip silver :) No need for it now as the P's would be a much more considerate value. Don't want to do my P's looking mean ahha.

Both of those items i bought for under $50 ! CHEAP AS CHIPS !

So we got onto doing it trying to remove it but then still had some trouble. We ended up not going with it as to it was getting dark and decide to go for a mini shoot.

Next day came home from work finding mmy dad working on the car even though it was raining.

Few updates of what he did :

- New Air filter
- New brake light bulb
- 4 NGK Spark plugs
- Ignition plug
- Ignition cover/starter

Edit : was distributor cap and rotor not ignition plugs :lol:

I managed to get home and help him finish it off with the engine flush and putting in the new fluid.

He removed the bolt in 2min...

Problem was we used the wrong socket and couldn't find the missing socket ( used 20 , 19 was in the garage) FAIL !

I now owe my dad money from buying those parts =.= :lol:

After that car was still having problems...

IT had trouble idling from starting the car going to 1.2 RPM down to about 400RPM rough idling and shaking then down to a complete off.

So we took her to the mechanics the next day.

We got to the mechanic and like everyone else when i bought the car shook his head.

He knew the car was going to be a headache because both being a european car and getting parts and fixing it was going to be a bitch. LUCKILY there wasn't much to fix.

Throughout the last week the car had some idling problems. This was due to a fuel blockage of some sort.

So we left the car there for the night.

As soon as me and my dad had to TRAIN> WALK home, we got a call 3/4 of the way home saying it's all done and you can pick it up. How fustrating...

So now the car has a bit more things fixed ;

- Gas fuel pump flowing perfectly
- 2 Brand New front Tires ( Firezna 195/50R )
- Wheel Alignment ( BY HAND !! Not perfect =.= )

TODAYS UPDATE 12/4

Went to GIO/NRMA right after work to try to get CTP Greenslip and insurance worked out.

Both quoting all up to be EST $2000 !!!! That's what happens when your 17 with your own car.

So .. didn't end up getting it. Now going to get CTP Greenslip tomorow and hopefully see what we can do with the insurance. Have to get the car on the road to get things happening. :)

UPDATE !

Haven't been udpated in a while.

So Last week i had a few mroe things to do before i start to drive the car.



First things first rego. I had about 1 hour everyday after work before they closed. managed to do this in two days.

19 / 4 Throughout that night .

Managed to get a few quoets and the printer working and now I have Insurance !!!!! and finally be able to drive the car !

Up and ready to go !

I have just went for a drive an hour ago and i must say learning manual from auto is alot hardder than i thought , even though i've driven in a few..

Thing about my car was that the clutch goes down in stages and not smoothly so abit of WD40 and Spraying the spring helped it abit more smoothly.

Without a doubt i stored through that hour of driving plenty of times !

This was due to hill start and my god i must say, i ... hate ... hillstarts... Did mad skids in panic though ahah ! Slowly getting there.

Overall it was fun to FINALLY drive my car around with me driving it but also the feel of having COMPLETE control of how the car changes gears and works it's way around is so... breathtaking that i am slowly becoming one with my car. (besides talking to her lol).
