I currently have a Canon IXUS 75 which is great for having in your pocket when out and about but when i head to Europe in a few months I am keen to take some slightly better shots. Not sure i want to go as far as a DSLR due to size and the fact I probably won;t use all of it's power but was thinking of a Canon G12 as a camera with some decent power but still reasonably simple to use.
Anyone have any experience with or opinions of it?
unless you need the hotshoe, get an S95. Same sensor, better lens, easier to carry

actually gonna have to agree with saad there.. the S95 rates very very highly. also consider the panasonix lumix DMC-lx5. the S95 and LX5.. are considered the primo for compact prestige cameras. amazing sensors, picture quality etc. its the favourite compacts amongst semi pros and pros .. if you go online heaps of comparo of the s95 to lx5 and they both get top ratings amongst every pro camera review articles.
i chose the lx5 over the s95.

I chose the Olympus XZ-1. Have a look into it. Awesome lens and low light photography
Mate I went to Europe and Japan for over 6 months and lugging around my S90 (older version of S95) was big enough! When I was buying the S90 I contemplated about buying the G11 at the time but I'm glad I didn't. I'm even more glad that I didn't bring my Canon 40D + 17-40L lens either as that would have just been a pain in the ass. If size is an issue definitely go for the smaller option, the only real benefit of having the G series is the hot shoe flash which not that many people use. 4/3 SLR cameras are also very popular these days so have a look into one of those if you still want some good gear
edit: I can't comment on other brands and the equivalent models as I haven't used them before

i also choose the LX5, but i like how the s95 is so cheap! I was gonna buy one, but i already have an lX3, so dont really need it, although the extra zoom would be nice

camel, check out this website
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/q42010highendcompactgroup/
it has some good comparisons for you to check out. DPreview is highly regarded and its one of the few websites where reviews are actually taken seriously by users and manufacturers have been known to make updates and fixes based on feedback from this website.
just checked out the review the olympus mentioned and it does stack up REALLY nice against the S95 and LX5. scores higher than both... (marginally tho)
