Here's my baby I picked it up mid 2009, It came optioned with a sunroof, DSG and the RCD510 stero.

One of the first things I did was get the windows tinted and a stubby antenna.

Probably my first major mod (money wise) came when I decided to get the mark 6 reversing camera, because it meant upgrading to the RNS510 sat nav, which I didn't option when I purchased because the sales man talked me out of it as I already owned a tomtom.

My next planned mods are:

Coilovers (PSS10's on the way baby!)
Fiscon Bluetooth (Just need to organise for EA to install)
Sway bars (Sitting in the garage waiting on the coilovers)
Haldex Gen 2
S6 LED DRLs (May go the new MK6 R DRL's not sure yet)

Planning on getting a tune, intake and exhaust too. :)

Tastful mods there Chris, how much was the camera upgrade if you don't mind me asking, may be something that I'll look at later for my gti.

I'm in the same boat for wheels, hoping they arrive before the BBQ, just ordered my tyres which will be in by Thursday so just waiting on those wheels and fitment :)

What wheels did you end up going for?

It came to US$625 delivered though ECS tuning, the important thing when ordering contact them for a shipping quote (should be around US$80) because using there online form it comes to $300+ for shipping.

I'm acutaly a bit worried that we've bought the same wheels, you tell me what you got and i'll tell you what I got. :)

Thanks mate, didn't install it myself as I suck at those type of things. :(
I got Derek at European Autotech to install it, he's done at least 2 now that I know of and did a great job. It took him around 6 hours so it wasn't cheap to install, but well worth it.

Been meaning to say hi to, i'm always half asleep at the gtgs because I work nights and thinking about going to the gtg I can't even get a few hours in. So I don't mean to be anti social.
I think you were at Derek's the day he installed my camera (I was a zombie that day)?

And yes, he is expensive. LOL! The other 2 he did would be mine and John. His was the first guinea pig.

Do you mean to have the GPS in the shark fin antenna? On the roof? If so i've got the gps antenna inside my dash theres a metal bar behind the unit that its attached to (its magnetic) and its got a perfect view of the sky.

Yeah I was buggered that day I finished work @ 4am then had to leave home at around 6 to be at Darek's by 9, by about lunch time when I wandered back all I could think about was sleep. I'll be down there on a monday in the next couple of weeks to get my bluetooth hooked up, so hopefully i'll see you then, would love a ride in your beast. :)

chris32
22-03-2010, 11:06 PM
One thing you might want to check Nath is that some of the RCD510s can take the reversing camera, especially because yours is a MK6. From what i've read the only way to check is by pulling it out and looking on the back (mine wasn't) but it makes sense because people wouldn't want to pay the extra for the sat nav just to get the reversing camera.

22-03-2010, 11:06 PM

Thanks everyone for your comments. Originally I wasn't a fan of the LED lights but they do grow on you. I think it was all the time I spent following yousnooze to and from GTGs, lol. :)

I don't think I could live without the reversing camera now, I use the lines overlaid on the screen to judge if I'm going to curb an alloy, I've worked it out to a fine art and know exactly when to turn.

Thanks guys, I got them though redline motorsports in the US, your right frenchie Tirerack wont ship BBS out here any more.

Was going to go up to the 19" but the roads round here are horrible and from the amount of bubbles I got on the stock 18's I thought I was better off not risking an even lower profile tyre.

I've also teed up some PSS10 coilovers which should arrive in the next couple of weeks. :)

I noticed he had taken them off the site. But thought he was just updating as it was out of date with the current range. I know this as I initially purchased the BBS CK's in anthracite but soon discovered that they were no longer made in that finish, so paid the bit extra for the CH's, which ended up being out of stock in the US, thats when the 3 month wait started, lol.

@Nath: Loving it! It corners a lot better, its like i'm on rails. I haven't had a chance to push it yet, so i'll get back to you with a full review. :)

@Kevin: I love how its sitting too, it really toughened it up a lot, but will need to look into rolling the guards as i'm scrubbing a bit. I'm yet to do the fender screw mod, so i'll see if that makes much of a difference. But I want to roll the guards anyway for piece of mind.

That's the right height for 18's. Good work mate. Just get some tyre shine on that rubber to make it look more integrated and you'll be set. Nice .:R :)

BAM!
Thought it was about time for an update:

Almost up to 20k
Had its 30000 2nd year service in june, lol.

Haldex gen2 with wireless switch
Had this installed by ramspeed in january, I love it and have it in race mode 99% of the time :>. In race mode it fells like your being pushed not pulled though the corners, its even more pronounced during take off. Probably my favourite mod thus far :).

Miltek non-res cat-back
Picked this up thanks to a group buy organised by Rennenhaus. Did alot of research and came to the conclusion that the resonated after it settled in was too quite (for my tastes), so went the non-res. Had it installed in september and the first day was awful and I really regreated getting the non-res, got home with a head ache, lol :(. Anyhow once it settled in as my research suggested, the drone got 100 times better, its now music to my ears, love it >D.

Fog light swap
Had the fog light and reversing light swapped over so that its legal for a RHD car, I know alot of people don't bother but it played on my mind a bit.

Heres a couple of random pics:

Audio upgrade
In the works at the moment at FHRX, whole bunch of stuff going in: focal 3-ways, audison bit ten processor, dynamat, zed leviathan amplifier, JL 10w3v3-4 subwoofer, audio integrations side mount box. Heres a couple of pics of the work in progress (more pics hopefully next week when its finished):

Up ahead:

Air intake
Not sure which way to go yet, love the GruppeM, hate the price. Currently eyeing off the modshack and the evoms intake, but haven't made my mind up yet, suggestions welcome.

Front sway bar
Plan to have this on before the january track day, will probably go whiteline to match the rear bar and i think i'll get the whiteline anti-lift kit at the same time.

I've got a couple of other things in the pipeline, but i'll see how they turn out before going public ;).

Great update Chris.
Car is looking brilliant.

Nice audio upgrade. I'm going to be approaching Marty @ FHRX sometime in the new year to talk about an update as well.
So is your car at his workshop atm?

Looks good. How much lower did you go all round? I have a 2 finger gap after getting the coils installed. Are you able to get full lock?

Thanks everyone for your comments :)

Cam, yep its at their workshop till monday, maybe a little longer.

Danny, haven't really checked the height, but I do scrape on some of the taller speed bumps. But still thinking about going just a tad lower, if I do i'll need to get the fronts rolled as it does scub a little when driving aggressively in the corners (but then I still haven't done the fender screw mod).

Thanks guys :) only thing i'm thinking about adding now is dynamat to the hatch area, but i'm in two worlds about it, because the last thing the r32 needs in more weight. On the other hand it could work as an excuse for why I need a turbo kit. o_O

Nice job, shame you can't see that insane looking amp! How heavy is the dynamat? This would improve even the stock speakers which are a bit buzzy when you crank the bass.

I believe its around 200grams per squared foot, which would add up pretty quick.

so in a nutshell does this Audison bit-ten processor thing get a good quality sound out of a shit audio quality head unit like an rns510? Or have i completely missed the point of it haha?

Yep pretty much. I don't fully understand the technical side of it, but everything I researched lead to that conclusion.

Sounds like a necessary piece of equipment then, focal set up in my last golf was all top notch stuff and still sounded like balls because of the rns, ill have to look into these when i start my next project. Looks like an amazing install mate, enjoy!

The bit-ten will take the audio feed from the RNS, so if the signal is dirty, it can't clean that up.
the only way around this is an alternate source unit

What it will do, is give tuning options needed to give a balanced output across the frequency spectrum.
It also gives lots of crossover options for the amp, so you can run active, and/or time alignment.
It's a trick piece of gear, and Marty has the expertise to set it up correctly.

Looks good, what did the job set you back.

I was looking at the Focals for my installation but went with Hertz components instead, bought a 11" Focal sub though. I put the crossovers in my doors. You must have a shit load of wiring coming back to under your seat. You did front and back speakers? So 150W to each door and 300W to the Sub?

All this just to listen to mp3's? Am I missing something here?

?? Not just mp3s, it does all the outputs from the head unit. CD, DVD, MDI, etc.

Sure you can live without it, but once you hear what your missing out on, its hard not to justify it. Turning it off makes a big difference, sounds like arse.

If you get the right MP3s you cannot tell the difference to CD quality. Its only shit MP3s that sound shit.

True if you download them they are crap. If you're gonna downlaod musicget flac's and change 'em to 320kbs mp3's. Still nothing beats a cd for quality.

Hi, nice install.

Do you think the Audio Integrations box would fit in a GOLF R? I assume the R32 has the same raised floor compared to the standard MK5 Golf same as the Mk6 and GOLF R scenario.

Cheers.

Don't go deaf though, you still need to listen to that vr6!

Dd you experience any loss in function from the steering wheel or headunit from using the bit ten?

From my reading a fair few of the OEM integration units require their own volume control due to the OEM HUs.

Also, what did you do with the factory amp for the R32? Did you totally remove it and do a full rewire?

No loss in function, all buttons work as per oem, the head unit doesn't even know that it is no longer talking to the oem amp/speakers.

I've never heard that about volume control being lost? And I did a fair bit of reading on audio upgrades on golfs before deciding which direction to take on upgrading mine.

Factory amp was removed to make way for the 4 crossover units that now live under the seat in its place (see the pics a few pages back).

Freaking sweet. Thanks for ur write-up.

I see that with the crossovers under the front passenger seat that they have been spliced into the factory harness that comes from the HU to the factory amp. Is what I am seeing correct? What parts of the factory wiring were used in the install?

From memory it was all rewired with higher quality speaker wire, if thats what you mean? Next time i'm down near where it was installed i'll drop in and ask, but I know a fair bit of my invoice was new wiring and the labour involved in installing it.
