Alrighty, here is my build thread. :)
I was on the lookout for a 4x4 that really sounded good with a limited budget. This litle beauty popped up in Newcastle and I snapped it up for $6000.
Had 178XXX kms, steering wheel neeeded TLC, interior plastic was good, seats are probably 85% condition, paint/body work needs attention imo, mechanicals are good.

I attacked the car with a black rattle can and came out with zis:

http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii140/schoona/DSCF6003.jpg
Also used Kiwi shoe polish on the bumpers/arches/handles etc. For those of you with older vehicles and faded black plastic, this works. Just need the liquid and some paper towel. Males a massive difference.

I then got probably my favourite/most anticipated thing for the car. An exhaust.
I went with:
- 2 1/4" Mild Steel piping.
- Resonator
- Magnaflow muffler.
Cost = $520

My low beams were shot, so I replaced the lows with Phillips Crystal Visions ($100 for the pair).
Also had a short circuit with my power windows and a regulator die so needed that repaired.
Have replaced my rocker cover gasket, was good to crack open the VR heads and have a look :)
Also did my water pump. Replacement was $140 from Camden GTI. DIY can be found here (no pictures sorry)

Now for some more fun. A group of about 4 mates, supervised by Senior Skirt Burgs installed JOM coilovers into the little Mk3. Can't say it was a stress free affair, there were some hiccups, but a good learning experience for young guys. I also didn't know how "low" it was going to be, so we took precautionary measures by using pavers. I'll let you be the judge ;)
H&R Camber bolts were ordered.
Note: I recommend you get replacement Strut mount rubbers and bearings and install at the same time. Saves you pulling them out again, unless you want the practise.

Then came the black wheels, just for a cheap, different look and to help clean up the wheel presentation. Bridgestone Adrenalin RE001's were fitted, 205/50/15. Really really nice tyre!

I am quite happy with how much better the car presents but there is still plenty to do. Switching between mods and maintenance is a good balance to have. Keeps things interesting :)
Just really want these to go on now!!
15x7 ET23 front and 16x7 ET23 rear BBS/Mahle wheels. A friend of VWW showed them to me and I had to have them for obvious reasons. Love the centre caps. I hope it's not too much, but I will cop a little bit of poke with this set-up, which I am not worried about, it will slow me down.

Well I got these second hand off Matt from Camden GTI. They need a sandblast/powdercoat, but they should come up good. For mk3's these are that hard to find because only one thule model was made for them. I got them as a steal pretty much because of the condition.
Haven't tried to put them on but they don't look too complex.
If you want these bars for a mk3, probably trawl vortex or german ebay or something like that Ed ;)

UPDATE
Well due to caliper clearance issues I have had to source new brakes. It's a bit of a mixup, but I have 288mm rotors (like on Devs late model VR), Mk4 carriers and calipers, which I picked up on Friday night. It's really only rubber that I need now as far as getting the BBS/Porsche wheels on the car.
I have rego/green slip due in 2 weeks, and am now at 205k kms, so I have a major service happening next Friday, as well as a bit of a birthday ot try and cure some front end suspension noises.
List off the top of my head:
- swaybar bushes
-control arm bushes
-new HD strut mounts and bearings
-wheel bearings all round
-urethane rear suspension mount bushings
Also have a new VR6 Euro lip waiting to go on. Will be organising the refurb on the roofracks shortly aswell.
On Friday I went and visited Mickey, whom most of you saw his white VR6 with no bars on at the Nationals. Anyway his neww party piece is a SCHRICK intake manifold. I have to say I was sceptical as to how much difference the intake mani would make. In short it was awesome. Running 1st and 2nd out the car was definitely a lot more brisk, but by how much is immeasureable (comparing to a VR like mine). What was the phenomenal part about it, cruising at 60kmh in 4th, drop back to 3rd and it takes off like a MkV GTI in 2nd. Well worth a spot on a shopping list!
Everyone likes pictures, while I was in Sydney on Friday night I also picked up some TT wheels to run as dailys. Bored with the 15" BBS, though I love the adrenalins on them. I swapped dads Continental rubbber over just to see what it would be like, and well, pictures paint the better idea.....love the actual "look" though, so ill be sourcing 17" rubber soon.
Wheel specs are 17x7.5 ET32.

So I have run in to a small problem, see here:
http://i263.photobucket.com/albums/ii140/schoona/02072010279.jpg
You'll notice the bottom adapter is perfectly fine, the wheel nuts are on, and the bolts poking through (facing down) sit flush.
The adapter on top however, nuts are fine, but the head of the hex bolt protrudes ~3mm. This is the wheel mounting face.
I was wondering if H&R had a different set of bolts (I need 10), as the hex protrudes past, but the 60* taper may also be the root problem (Ie it's too long).
Anyone got ideas, have emailed the gentleman that got them in to the country for me as an enquiry, to see what ECS/H&R say.
Only alternative I can think of iss to CB the wheel face to clear the bolt head, but I REALLY do NOT want to do that...

I have got most of a major service out of the way, am just waiting on the NGK plugs to come through and I'll chane them over. The car is running a lot smoother, box feels great also. Used Repsol oils, I'm a fan.
Changed my rear strut mounts to Prothane ones from GAP today, rear end does feel a little bit tighter even on normal street driving.
Will upgrade my brakes (needed for clearance for the BBS) this friday in the midst of the big job:
Control Arm Bushes.
This is going to be a big job, the control arms mount to the body by the same bolts that bolt the subframe to the car as well. So I'm estimating a couple of hours next friday to get all this sorted in time for Rego.
schoona
18-07-2010, 08:34 PM
Friday:
Car got rego'd/greenslip paid etc.
Full service almost complete. Usded Repsol oils. Have NGK platinum plugs to go in etc so trying to give the car a bit of a birthday.
Control arm bushes (poly) were an absolute bitch of a job, we used grease, presses, dollies and vices, dropped it in a hot mug of water for 10 mins and still couldnt get 2 of them in. Ended up shaving a better lead on to the bush. It's not going anywhere so I don't regard it as dodgy at all.
The stuffed control arm bush (drivers side), had also stuffed the strut mount (bearing completely collapsed, which I replaced today. Wheel alignment tomorrow and hopefully all the gremlins have been taken care of.
Also need a new sump am weeping just in front of the sump plug.
Onwards and upwards to the fun stuff again
PS. Had no luck with finding replacement bolts for the adapters (ECS/local Hi tensile bolt company) so will shave the hex face. I can't see a problem with this (though let me know if you can?).

Bolts should be machined down this week on the adapters.
Pulled the brakes that I got from Matt apart today and painted them Silver. Have a caliper rebuild kit on its way to fix up the rubber/seals etc and ensure no problems.

How many times have you said that since you've had the car? Good to see that we've got some progress going on! How much of an upgrade/improvement will the 288 brakes be? Is there a heap of difference in stopping power between the two?
schoona
25-07-2010, 01:40 PM
You raise a good point smartarse!
Well Mick's 288s felt better, he had the late model VR setup. That's what you have!!
It's still a single piston caliper (looks bigger in area though?) and onto the slightly bigger rotor (280 > 288).
It's for a Mk4, a heavier car, so I espect an improvementr but not much really, it was more the clearance issue that necessitated the change.

tell me you're not going to use the nankangs?
schoona
09-08-2010, 10:14 PM
Thanks Tendy :)
Unfortunately for that size, they are one of the most accessible. Also I am happy to trial these (size and nature) as these are only show wheels for one, and (especially the fronts) may end up having solid amounts of camber dialled in. These won't be on the car all the time either.
I'll see the outcome of these, find the best compromise for height/camber/tyre size....I think I can get Yoko S drives in this size, which are a fair bit more expensive, particularly when ou want them fitted and the companies don't want to stretch.
Besides I have RE001's for the majority of my road duties anyway :)
I do take your point on board
Mal, what's your understanding/experience with Yoko S Drives?
I'm hoping to have some, too.
schoona
09-08-2010, 10:25 PM
Hey Ben, I have not yet run them, so can't qualitatively comment. My idea is that bottom of the range (or close to) Yoko's are still going to be a good tyre, though will definitely have their limits. Hence not being too concerned with trying something like the Nankang out for better money (apprentices!!! ha), not sure on the Treadwear rating but I believe it's reasonable.
Other tyres of similar ilk aew the Kumho KH11, a mate of mine had them on 7.5" fronts and 9" backs on his VR6 and they held up pretty well :)
Just a case of finding the size you want/need and having someone willing to fit them.

The reason why people use a nankang over a kuhmo is for the stretch a nankang will stretch way better than a kuhmo for that overall "look"

And in europe aswell, you can't deny no matter how hard you want to believe it that BBS rs's are and will be the best wheel on a golf thats why its done!
Not everyone has it in the US alot more people have schidt's, they have been played a fair bit.
schoona
12-08-2010, 05:23 PM
This $hit could get personal quickly. Haha.
I thought I noted, for the "look" these are required. Why would I stretch Pilot Sports or something??
I have adrenalins on the standard wheels, much more suited to carving corners than the fitment this is going to be.
BBS RS are overdone, but as Steve said they look so right. To even suggest RS4/RS4 reps are in the same league is pretty "derogatory" towards the RS's. Schmidts, Ronals, OZ's, BBS, Merc/Bentley OEM, have all been done plenty overseas yes, so trying to be a little unique and take a different approach is hard.
It's why I like mine, they are clena, no bolts, a lot more simple looking than an RS, IMO equal effect.

.
for the "look" these are required. Why would I stretch Pilot Sports or something??
As long aa you look cool that's all that matters, but agree I wouldn't waste expensive tyres.
BBS RS are overdone, but as Steve said they look so right. To even suggest RS4/RS4 reps are in the same league is pretty "derogatory" towards the RS's.
BBS RS and the like are a bit nicer than RS4 wheels but personal taste. They should be for the price. I like them but think they suit older cars better like E30 BMW's etc. Don't know about them being the 'best' for MK5 Golfs as I'm sure everyone is just copying each other in the US and except for the mesh centres just look like any steel rim, kind of look smaller due to that style.
Can't really argue with the style though as it looks hot when done properly. Just not really for looks over function as you can't drive the car when it's sitting on the bumpstops.
Ps Just winding you up, they are awesome :).

I'll give a full wrap up later, coilovers didnt get touched at all.
Am about to start 7x12 hour shifts straights so might have to be a bit patient with me. But I love that the hard work is done mostly, and it has finally come together sortof.
Have to give a big shout to the boys that wanted to come and indulge in my passion for the night and give a hand. Really appreciated, and couldn't have done it without Luke Hulks. An absolute champion, honest bloke :)

Thanks mate, much appreciated!
WEll one thing I really hate is rake. Because of the 15s on the front, it rakes like a bitch now.
To close that wheel gap, I would probably need to drop the front by ~30mm to be square with the tyre shoulder.
30mm lower though and the front lip will probably be on the ground.
The back fitment is perfect. It's exactly how I wanted it! But when/if I lower the front, I will end up with even more rake. Obviously he back will have to come down too then....
Will be a bit of trial and error, am going to get used to driving a car built like this for a while....will probably wind it down for shits and giggles for special occasions though ;)

Haha. They aren't RS's. These are a lot harder to find than RS's (hence the odd sizes, they aren't a "complete set"). They are also a simple, clean single piece wheel, not 3 piece like RS's or 2 piece like RM's.
Thanks for the comments though :)
Ahhm, not sure i'll run the wheels on the putty road run (!!!), but certainly october dyno day ill probbaly come down, as well as the watercooled annual summer run to wollongong, which as always everyone is always invited to. Depends how I go :)

Had a chance to get under the car today and have a look see/complete some work.
- Tightened a control arm bolt that has worked it's way loose when I installed the poly bushes a couple of weeks ago. Seems to have cured the problem listed above ^^. The car would 'torque steer" in 5th at 100kmh, seems to be fine now. Am only left with the noise of the coilovers. That has to be my only grip about them, they ride really well (for 550 shipped anyway) and get plenty of low, but damn these are noise!
-Installed BFI "stealthline" engine mounts. They were the only ones Tim had available but they suit my purpose fine, as always fast shipping. Thanks!
-Installed my NGK platinum plugs (now that I got a new spark plug tool, again thanks Tim)
-Moar lows. It didn't come down evenly :( will need another dig tomorrow. But looking better every time. (Not to blow my own horn though!) Will get a good suspension checking over and another alignment done on Friday.
Yee all like pickshers, been learning. These were very quick but hopefully a couple of different "feels" to them.

Well I decided to buy a nice daily so I can start amassing more "less compromised" parts for the VR6
Loose ideas for the VR6 will be VRT (prob stay at 2.8L, GT30R or GT3582R (been looking at compressor maps and different curves and trying to work out which way to go), 4 bucket seat conversion with half cage and minimal interior, respray (nimbus grey, RS or a deeeeeeep blue not sure yet) and 17x9 work meisters all round.
It will take a while, not overnight but I really want to make the best mk3 I can. So this thread will probably be pretty quiet for a while and I'll fire up again when I can start posting some good progress.
My sister is actually getting to drive the VR while she finds her feet in Sydney for uni next year, so it's not gonna gather cobwebs. In the meantime I'll enjoy my DBP Mk4 .:R32

Anyways the pea shooter was killing power and fuel economy, so for $200 fitted, I got this put on for her. It's interesting (would have liked 2.5" dual rounds but really wasn't too worried)
Sounds good, nice purr. Little bit of drone, but less than the magnaflow. Way less external volume. Power is a lot better, but still short of the Magnaflow. Butt dyno.
