Ok I Own a Mk6 Golf gti and i want to buy H&R Sway Bars.

The fronts come in 26mm and 28mm

and the rears come in 22mm and 24mm

whats the difference and why is the bigger one more expensive?

Also are they worth it? and should i go with APR or H&R Sway bars?

thanks in advance.

Great link John, that guy would be an asset on any forum!

I'm no sway bar dexpert () but all modern sports cars have them and upgrading both front and rear sways at the same time (to thicker ones) is a smart move if you like cornering hard.

Your cars are already so well balanced and I cringe every time I read people upgrading just one sway. Aftermarket companies design their front and rear sways to work together so whatever you do be sure to buy both front and rear.

Unlike OEM sways most aftermarket ones are adjustable too.

PS: Reagrding which sways to buy, thicker or thinner: I've read cases of people with oversized sways breaking OEM end links so that's worth looking into (it might mean you have to upgrade some other parts).

Smart move, I had Big H&R's on my MKV GTI with PSS10's and found it was too stiff. 26/22mm is a good compromise.

Are APR sways hollow? I'll be trying to go solid sways if possible.

Correct. You can buy the H&R sway bushes separately to get rid of the noise.

Welcome to the forum Katrina. When you say sway bar links are you referring to the bushes where the sway bars connect to and then screwed onto the chassis of the car? If yes, I dont see why not for as long as the internet shop you are buying from is a reputable, tried and tested and know 100% they are not there to rip you off.

If you are referring to the Sway Bars themselves, same answer. Just make sure you know the internet shop you are getting them from.

Gerard at GC Corp sold me my rear bar. He might have competitive prices but don't know if it is in stock.

I just have the rear on the Mk5, but set to soft. I found hard a bit twitchy if you were lazy and trail brake hard or have funny roundabouts (esp in the wet). Soft works great and comes closer to what the Mk6 have as stock (bigger rear bar than Mk5).
Sure, it might not have the balance of doing both but is a cheaper option that is good bang for your buck.

Once i get my act together to put the SHS in, it should work even better balance wise.

Folks,

I'm going to jump start this thread in the hopes I can get some good advice... I'm thinking of putting sway bars on my R.

BUT, I've heard several stories about the complexity of replacing the front sway bar on the Golf MKVI and the need to have it done by someone that has half a clue. This info has put me off replacing the front bar, however some folks have commented that it's unwise to replace just the rear bar.

Hopefully some of you will share your thoughts and give me some advice... So far I've been looking at H&R and Whiteline products. Keen to go ahead, but want to do it with my eyes wide open.

Thanks, Mark

Mark,

According to H&R it is best to change both bars at the same time. And they are also supposed to run on the same setting.

The front bar is difficult to change, you need to drop the subframe. You'll need an alignment after it.

i have been running on the rear 22mm H&R and front stock for a while....

but i also have PSS10 adjustments to play with for oversteer / understeer / neutral. i'm currently on PSS10 setting 5 front and rear and found the cornering is sharper. have not yet understeered on both Lakeside track and Mt Tambourine twisties (could mean i need to drive harder!!)

but it's a gti..

will get the front installed sometimes this year ;-)

Sway bars are sometimes misunderstood items.
If your car oversteers, you need to stiffen the front or soften the rear. If you understeer you need to stiffen the rear or soften the front. If your car rolls through a corner but is neutral, then both bars can be stiffened. If you make it too stiff all round, then you can set the car up to tripping over (rollover) with a pothole etc.
Making a front drive car too stiff at the front can lead to lifting a wheel and loosing drive.
It is a science to get everything right as your selection of shocks and springs also come into it. If you can get an opinion from a professional driver(track/rally), then you will get a better car that will be safer.

you'll be surprised how much of a difference sway bars make, best to do both, then again it dosent hurt to just do the rears, the fronts are always missions to do but the rears can be done at home with some know how and correct tools. Also have you thought of chassis strengthing items such as the unibrace?

Yep, I am keen on this too. Looking for both f & r with H&R so any recommendation would be much appreciated. Also it there is a GB that would be awesome too..
