For members to post which mobile phone they use, and comments please
Phone - Nokia E71
Pros and cons - good battery life, email facility is average. Small keyboard.
Currently considering replacing it with a HTC Hero.

Samsung D900
Ive had this phone for about 4 years, has a great camera, looks nice, makes calls and sends texts.
Next phone will probably run win 7 mobile
HTC Hero -
Pros: good build quality, telfon coating (white) hi res screen, android OS, nice design.
Cons: Australia have no paid apps, weird button placement ( trust me. Not ergonomic at all.) small screen size, no proximity sensor
Overall impression: a good contender to the iPhone but has its flaws. Nexus One is a much better phone, IMHO

Blackberry Bold 9000
Pro's
Great business phone (runs rings around an iPhone)
Excellent user experience.
Cons
I got fat fingers.
Blackberry Bold 9700
Pros: everything the Bold 9000 plus more. New OS is much better. Faster, smaller, better camera. Optical trackpad.
Cons: not for fat fingers.

iPhone
Pros: Apps, prefer the on screen keyboard for business use like emailing (I'm faster on it than on a Blackberry) and the ease of setup to work with mail servers (this is a big one because I usually end up setting up everyone at works phone for email so having a quick easy process is great), iPod functionality
Cons: Battery life, can be slow at times

iphone as well... you've pretty much said it all. but an extra Con... phone is useless unless it is on telstra.
And definitely agree with the pathetic battery life.

One of the things that attracted me to the Hero is the "claimed" 750hrs standby time.

Pros: Excellent battery life, good loud speaker
Cons: light on features

Not true. Almost as bad as the iPhone.
iPhone 3GS 16gb.
Pros: Looks nice, multi-touch, great multimedia device, easy to use
Cons: Itunes, lacks communication features with other phones (i.e sending files via bluetooth), battery life could be better but I wouldn't say its too bad (still lasts me 4 days standby with about 3-4 hours usage if I don't have 3G enabled), reception is a bit crappy in some areas sometimes. Could be the carbon fibre case, but my work phone a Nokia E65 is fine.

iPhone 3G 16gb (jail broken)..
Pros: as mentioned above, easy to use, best media player on a phone (IMO), good sound quality.
Cons: bit slow, bad battery life, inflexible but JB fixes most things.
I had a few of the older HTC's (touch cruise) and while they were pretty cool still more annoying than the iPhone, plus all the apps etc and eveything just works.

Yeah anything with a big screen is going to chew the juice. I have to charge it everyday minimum. My old Sony Ericsson W810i had a real battery life of 7 days or something. was awesome.

Its a pretty nice phone. Awesome camera/vid (720p) with heaps of features.
The down side is its not multi touch and doesn't feel as smooth as the iPhone. When I say smooth, the iPhone GUI feels a bit nicer to use.

iPhone.
Picked it up years ago in shanghai, its only a 2g 16gb but its never had a problem, cant say the same for the nokias and Motorolas i've owned. If it was to die on me I would probably go back to a sony ericsson (always been happy with the ericssons i've owned) or try a black berry.
after only having nokias for the past 12 years i made the switch to an iphone 3GS 16gb.
so far its freaking awesome
my only cons so far is adapting to using it. so far texting has been a real pain in the ass

I did seem pretty cumbersome typing one letter at a time, and predictive text doesn't work all that often, but when you get good at typing with both thumbs it gets a lot faster.

since discovering turnig it sideways my texting speed has increased dramatically...
in part thanks to my freak thumbs

I have a Nokia E72.
Pros: Battery Life, Proper QWERTY, size and weight, it keeps the application state (unlike the iPhone), Nokia Messaging
Cons: No apps like an iPhone, Camera isn't as good as SonyEricsson.

Have one too, best phone I have had ever (normally change once or twice a year)!
iPhone = Overrated!

iPhone rocks.
Pros: Syncs with my two Macs and MobileMe cloud data service. When I bought it at the Apple Retail Store, I had ALL my phonebook, contacts, emails and Calendars loaded within 1 minute of switching the thing on for the first time! Just enter username & password... too easy. Massive support from websites, financial institutions and some very very useful applications.
Cons: Apple restrictions... But I figured some of these are a good thing, ensuring more consistent quality of apps and malware security. Having all my computer stuff apple now, being labelled an apple fanboi?

iPhone 16g 3G (not the 3GS)
Pro : Best phone I have had hands down. Dont thnk I can ever go back to a nokia or ericsson or the like. Tonnes of apps, very useful in any situation. And jailbreak opens up the phone completely for numerous mods
Con : Battery life, 2.0MP camera, no video recording, cannot send stuff via bluetooth, converting movie into apple specific format is a PITA and jailbroken iphones are laggier than normal ones ive found.

Hoping someone can answer this question.
If you have a specific phone that is exclusive to one particular provider, let's say Telstra for example, and you can buy that same phone "unlocked" from a retailer.......will it work on other networks, besides Telstra?
nath_mk6
27-04-2010, 10:18 PM
if the phone isnt locked to a carrier, ie purchased outright as an unlocked phone you can use it however you wish, simply insert a compatible sim and off you go

27-04-2010, 10:22 PM
Have you tried calling up and asking to unlock it (at least you can with Optus)?
OraQube
27-04-2010, 10:45 PM
That might incur a fee though, unless Optus do it for free? Because I'm with Three and I think they charge an unlocking fee.
Incidentally, I was looking at the HTC HD2 which was exclusive to Telstra when it first arrived in the country in February. The generic or unlocked version was supposed to be released to other retailers at the end of March...but never did. So I couldn't wait anymore and decided to get one from Hong Kong instead which turned out to be cheaper anyway. It's unlocked and works perfectly fine on the Three network.

Nah 3 unlock for free. You just gotta call 3 care. If they ask why say I wanna use it o/s or some crap.
If you move away from a vendor specific firmware on the phone they void the warranty. I found out the hard way :-/

I don't want to confuse the issue. I'm talking about a new UNLOCKED phone. The question of unlocking doesn't apply.

Need some advise on the Iphone. My eight yo daughter wants an Iphone, and me being cheap and looking at getting her an 8gb 3g Iphone instead of a 3gs. What does a 3gs do better than a 3g (besides having more internal memory)....
Any Iphone wizards care to help??
Samsung Galaxy Icon..
I've had it for a few months now, very happy with it apart from the fact that Samsung wont upgrade the android OS from 1.5 to 2.0 or at least 1.6. Phone get very laggy and that gets frustrating!! I knew i should have got the HTC.. arghh!

I think the only difference is really the speed and a few gimic type apps (the compass etc) that the phone comes with. Guy at work has the older 3g and it does all the same things that my 3gs does, and with the new one coming out mid year it wont be all that different either if history is anything to go on.
O and the 3gs gets better reception obviously.
The camera is also better on the later model i think
