Hey guys

Everyone seems to have a diary of their car mods, so I thought I'd start one.

First, here are some pics of the car (I bought the car in April 2008 and these pics were taken early last year after a wash, wax and full treatment. The exterior now compared to these pics look more or less the same)

Don't forget the debadging on the car's tail. Very clean!

Do you have any pics with the 'xenon-look' headlights? These appear to be previous to that mod.
Plus a pic of the Forge twintake, installed.

PS. Can you link to some of your mods? I couldn't find some of these older thread. Thanks. :)

Bizi, the headlamps I have look EXACTLY like the OEM xenon headlamps that the R32's come as standard. ITs just that mine is a halogen headlamp, but its still OEM VW. got it shipped from germany

Some example of Jetta's on the H&R site (probably seen them but looks good, OZ wheels):

I think you'd have to go 19" on a Jetta!

hey greg
yeah im planning to go 19's on the jetta. but nothing that looks too "racy". i like the clean simple look of the Advan RS-D"s and the black/chrome lip will go nicely IMO with the colour scheme I have in mind (silver/chrome/black)

Love Helios ! but you still pull off the Advans - nothing smaller than 19''

Take your time with wheels - plenty of choice out there

I agree, the twintake sounds really loud.

BTW, I have those Advan RSD. Let me know if you want to see how it fit on your car.

Yeah that and exterior will probably be one of the last things I do to the jetta.

I was initially thinking BBS RS in black/chrome with a bit of dish in 18"s but BBS RS has been done to death and i decided I want at least 19's (ur talking to a person who came from an accord euro with 20" JDM AME's. lol ^^)

really? the twintake doesnt sound that loud from in cabin? maybe its just from the outside?

U have a set of Advan RS-D's? what size and offset have u got tendy? If I could trial fit it just so I get an idea i'd really appreciate that! Im still unsure about the width im wanting to go.
Initially I wanted something like 8.5 front, 9.5 rears but thats pointless on a FF car.... It'd prob be 8.5's all around for me...

Hey John. V3's should be coming in in about.....4 weeks or so? It's on order already.

Should all be fitted on the car by hopefully end of April? (Im getting the sways installed the tuesday after easter long weekend)

It's just that Euro modding isn't cheap but fun to do it at least once which we both have!

More pics, Stephen!

I'm glad we could finally meet and that you can benchmark your ideas against what others have done to their GTIs and R32s.
It seems yours will be quite unique in several ways.

It would be very good to see a pic of your car with 10D's impressive Advans. Keeping the exterior very low key and OEM+. :)

I think Stephen's will be a Q-car for some time, as long as it keeps the factorbars y-look exterior.

Stephen, are the sway bars worth putting on for a few weeks before the coilovers arrive?
Why not do them at the one time?

Is it to give you a feel for the effect of each mod? :)

Currently on my iPhone at TOP ONE watching dedy and the guys fit my front and rear h&r sways. Should be done in another hour. Then it's off to Derek at EA for my 7500km service and piston DV replacement. :D

stephen8512
06-04-2010, 04:54 PM
well, Im back from doin my rounds! :D

Went to Top One and was greeted by Dedy who was going to do the install of my H&R Front and Rear sway bars.

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y294/stephen8512/DSC_0080.jpg

2 hours later, I got the car back and boy did they make a difference!

The H&R 28mm/24mm F+R is what I went with. I was surprised to find out how heavy they are compared to OEM! The bars are solid, not hollow like some other brands and because of this, the car feels stiffer. Bodyroll has reduced significantly and it now really does corner flat! It feels balanced now and the great thing is, it can be adjusted later on down the track. At the moment, it's setup as hard/hard but will prob change it up once the KW V3's come in. then i'll prob change the front to be on the softer setting.

Dedy from Top One : Highly recommended. Friendly guy and very particular with his work! Very happy!

154.3 KW / 204.3 HP at the wheels

Pretty happy with that seeing as how I only got the APR stage 1 + Forge TWINtake.

Excuse the pics as they were taken from iphone

Hey Stephen, did you get your Hella projectors from ECS?

http://www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Jetta_V--2.5/Lighting/Headlights/ES1884375/

I notice they have a few interesting ones on their site, plus the lip spoiler on the link above. Just wondering if this is a good or poor deal as I'm weighing up some options.

I am still impressed that the Jettas performed very strongly, yet still look (but probably not sound) totally 'quiet' on the street.

Yes, the curves might be very useful in your gear selections. :)

Hey mate. Yeah quite happy with the power curve. Its pretty linear so content with that. Also happy with the power output considering only a stage 1 APR flash and twintake is on the car... engine mod wise. Hopefully after I get the APR intercooler and RSC exhaust with down pipe, it should have a bit more POWERRRRRRRRRRRRR ;)

19-04-2010, 09:10 PM
Just making a larger surface area, Greg. The amount of air sucks still restricted by the pipe sized. It's just easier breathing with two nostrils instead of just the one.

Plus it looks MAD! haha

G-rig
19-04-2010, 10:12 PM
Ah ok, that sounds alright then but sounds like the bottle neck is still the 1 pipe and the turbo would only suck the same amount of air? I could understand if it was feeding a twin turbo with two intakes.

Also you may have two nostrils but you also have two lungs :).

Stephen, I hope you get the coilovers soon and get some pics like the ones / above.
Does anyone want to get that Jetta, so we have another in the forum garage? :)

It would be great if you could get some professional pics (yourself or forum members) for before & after the cosmetic mods. :)
Stealth v. GLI-line. :)

Speaking of x-line, your R-line Mk6 wheel might be worthy of a new thread, in case it can be sourced as a group buy.

Don't forget the seller on eBay UK. From Portugal IIRC. I mentioned it on the DSG paddle shift group buy thread and added a link there.

I hope you can space out all the mods, to appreciate each as an upgrade. Do you have a rear lip, too? ECStuning had one, I recall.

Otherwise, you could have gone the Rieger rear valance and quad pipes. :)

Cheers,
Ben

I'm still tempted to get either projector or HID OEM Hella lights, like you did, but am unsure whether to get the individual spares from the US fro ~$300ea or to get a set via eBay.dk like you.

Please post a pic and quick writeup when you are done. Is the pedal replacement fiddly or complicated? I don't recall seeing a guide, but I guess you will get instructions in the box.

Hey ben I got them from fleabay from an OEM VW/Audi Dealer. Theyre coming in from Germany. Even with shipping included, it works out to be far cheaper than local.

Pedal replacement doenst seem too fiddly...havent had a good look yet but im quite handy with the tools so I should be okay

I think it'll work out to be the same anyway....whether u buy from US or germany. I just went to ebay.de and bought from there. The guy is an oem VW parts seller that shipped it to me

It does eliminate the drone. Loud during wide open throttle. I do have to admit it sounded really good with the twintake. What a blast!

Okay...quick update

My KW V3's landed in Australia last week  However, the guy I'm going thru said to me that during transit, one of the shocks got busted and he had to send it back to his supplier....:<:<:< *ARGH!* so annoying!! But what can ya do.... Been waiting for these since, March!!!

On a positive note though, he got back to me today saying that it has already left his supplier and the KW V3's should be here either late next week or early week after  He took the time to box it up firmer and put loads more bubble wrap or some sort of cushioning to prevent the shocks from being damaged in transit

Also, recently bought AP's old R32 brakes and front rotors. John (illektronik) bought the F+R brakes off AP but since he only wanted the rears, I took the fronts. (Thanks again John!)

First impression : The rotors are HUGE! They dont seem that much bigger in photos but compared to a stock GTI rotor, its quite big! The calipers are also very beefy as well!! I like!

Gave the calipers a quick clean with some warm/hot water, degreaser and steel brush and well, the results speak for themselves

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y294/stephen8512/DSC_0104-2.jpg

You can see in that photo, I also bought some MK6 Golf R Brake pad retainers. They will go over that rusted metal bit in that photo and should look a lot cleaner. :)

Before I put them on, I'm gonna get some HAWK CERAMIC low dust street pads (I think Christina has them on SUGA), Brake lines and paint the calipers red.

And also, got a little something for the engine bay.

I reckon R32 / S3 brakes shoud suffice.......for me anyway. I dont plan on going Stage 3.....Just stage 2+ .....will be happy with 170kw atw for daily driving. Im getting wheelspin as it is! haha. Was initially gonna go Brembo's but I dont need it....R32 fronts should do for now and later on I'll see if i can fish around for a rear R32 brake set...and maybe upgrade the rotors as well but thats all way way down the track

Yeah just annoying how I have to hoard everything in my room before I install.....

Still gotta get the brakepads and the brakelines, but once I get them, gonna install them with the front brakes, rotors, coilovers and defi gauges all in one hit....

Can I suggest you drive a car, properly, with the Hawk Ceramics on before you buy them?

too easy! will be at the warehouse meet this month. And with the K04, you might be happier with the daily driving. With mine theres ALOT of power but not many opportunities to use it a majority of the time but once you hit that sweet spot, it gets scary :> but the K03 is a nifty engine and stage 2+ has enough grunt me thinks after Kevin took me for a ride. Pace yourself with the mods otherwise you'll be running out of things to do! enough from me better get off to study!

Hey ben

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah I have yet to find anyone else who has hawk ceramics who is around where I live. Christina bought hers and installed it on the R32 and she tells me nothing but praise for them. I may ask her if I could drive SUGA so I can get a feel of the ceramics... but my brakes arent gonna be installed until 1-2 months time anyway so I have plenty of time to read reviews and hear testimonials

too easy! will be at the warehouse meet this month.

Yeah K03 with APR Stage 2+ tune, APR HPFP, APR RSC TBE, APR FMIC.....thats my plan. Will be happy to get approx 175+kw atw..... Should be MORE than enough for street.

Pace myself with mods?! Im pacing myself not because I want to, but because I HAVE to! Gotta keep earning the paper! man, if I had the cash, I would not be familiar with such a concept! haha! Sick of waiting and being patient! ARGH! but then again, good things come to those who wait... >D

recently purchased this 2nd hand, but mint condition! R32 highline cluster from 2008 model R32...

http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y294/stephen8512/photo.jpg

And no, the bottom isnt chipped or scratched or anything. its the photo.

After this is installed, only thing missing will be the GTI/R32 DSG steering wheel and then the interior will look more or less identical to the R32. Always loved the R32 dash cluster with the white lights and blue needles!

Only thing is, it's coming from the UK and thus, the speedo has MPH as well as KPH. I am told that I can buy just the KPH R32 dials separately and then install it by pulling the cluster apart but I'll see. Will be requiring VAGCOM work i'm told. Fingers crossed it wont be too hard!

coilover review and pics now >D

pics are up! hahaha heres the review.

I haven't had much chance to drive the car around after getting the coilovers done because Dedy and the boys were finished with my car at 11:00am, then I went straight to the missus's place which is 5 mins away, parked the car and caught the bus with the missus to go to Tetsuya's as we booked this place 6 months in advance for today at 12:30pm for lunch and we weren't gonna miss it! hahaha. (food was goddamn AMAZING to say the least!!! 13 course degustation set!)

But on with the review. Initial impressions is that the KW V3 suspension feels amazing. Super smooth ride and it felt like it didn't really compromise handling or comfort, which came as a big surprise to me. When I installed my TEIN TYPE FLEX on my old Accord Euro, every bump, every pothole could be felt STRAIGHT AWAY. It still feels like the OEM shocks in terms of comfort and you feel like it's going over the bumps and trying to iron them out as much as possible.

I haven't had much chance to drive it but upon initial first impressions, it's very comfortable and it corners like crazy now! The H&R sways and the KW's seem to be a match made in heaven! I have a Hard/Hard setup on the sways and it corners quite nice and flat.

The comfort thing, however, may be due to my 17" rims and 45 profile rubber I have on at the moment. I remember mr weightwatcher (aka Justin Fox) telling me at the Mascot KK meet that his CROSS Coilovers were very smooth but it could have been due to the 17" Denver OEM rims he was running at the time, whereas the PSS10's on Christina's SUGA .:R32 was a lot bumpier, possibly due to the 19" wheels and low profile rubber. But it could also be the setup of both the PSS10, CROSS and my KW's.....3 different coilovers too so not sure.....

I can't complain though. I'm happy that I have suspension sorted. Still looking at getting the Okuyama chassis underbracings but thats another time. The coilovers are still needing to get settled as Dedy advised me it would prob take approx 500-1000kms to get the springs fully settled in and have it sitting nice and low. The rear is about a 1.5 finger gap atm but the front is JUST under a 2.0 finger gap but was told this would eventually settle down to the 1.5 gap I have at the back.

Once I get wheels though, I may need to go spacers because like JF, im not liking the weak offset atm!

Will take some side on pics soon!! stay tuned folks!

I'll be heading back to TOP ONE in a few weeks time to get AP's old R32 front brakes installed along with the HAWK ceramics pads, goodridge front and rear brake lines and will also be getting guards rolled too as I couldnt do it this time around (refer back to top of this post for reason why. hahaha!)

Finally, the Jetta is coming together...piece by piece...

Hey AP! not till end of next year mate! gonna be one of the last things on my to do list....Gonna get car running perfectly and suspension all sorted and bodykit fitted. wheels will be the cherry on top; the icing on the cake which will set off the car. I'm gonna take my time with them but also keep an eye out for any good wheel deals like the one frenchman had of those 19" BBS super RS's. Just wish I had the cash.... argH!
