Hi All,

Finally got round to installing my RNS510 into the new GTI.
I know a fair few people have already done this, and its very easy but I thought I'd do a quick write up anyway.

RNS vs RCD

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/RNS510/i-kNcHt9K/0/L/DSC0028-L.jpg

I have the factory MDI and bluetooth fitted to my MY11 GTI Adidas, initially I thought I was going to have extra work re-connecting these to the RNS510 from the RCD510 but it turns out everything is already just packed into the wiring harness and its literally plug and play. It even remembered my bluetooth pair settings.

I did have to use vagcom to change a few things, but if you don't have access to it its not specifically required as the unit will still power up and function ok.

Anyways onto the install...

1) Enable Transport Mode on the RCD510. To do this press < + > + ♫
http://www.my-gti.com/1310/volkswagen-rcd-510-transport-lock-activation-deactivation

Note: this has to be deactivated when the unit is installed again.

2) Ensure you have the radio code with your RNS510 and satnav antenna. The
The brand of antenna that came with mine is Laviline. It seems to be better quality than the smaller antenna's.

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/RNS510/i-JqMvSTK/0/L/DSC0003-L.jpg

3) Tools for install:

- Torx driver T20
- Trim removal tool (or plastic/screwdriver)

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/RNS510/i-G8cWDX4/0/L/DSC0022-L.jpg

4) Start by removing the plastic fascia from around the unit. I found it easiest to pry from the bottom right corner and work my way around. The clips are much better than the MKV dash so you can pretty confidently use some "gentle" force to remove it.

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/RNS510/i-HNmgpvM/0/L/DSC0023-L.jpg

5) Remove the 4 torx screws from around the unit and pull it out.

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/RNS510/i-9KH5D3D/0/L/DSC0026-L.jpg

6) Mount the satnav antenna up above where the RNS510 sits. There is a small space for it at the back kind of just underneath the vents.

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/RNS510/i-DP9GPHB/0/L/DSC0036-L.jpg

7) Plug the unit in, test everything works and then follow the instructions in reverse to put the dash back together.

Vagcom Coding

1) Open the CANBUS gateway module. Go to "Installation List" and tick Navigation.
This should be enough to get the Compass/Nav screen in the MFD menu. If not, proceed to step 2.

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/i-5PV5kfQ/0/M/RNSscreen3-M.jpg

2) Open 37 - Navigation controller and go to Coding - Long Coding helper
Go to Byte 7 and tick "Communication Instrument via...BAP"

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/i-BTKr6KF/0/M/RNSscreen1-M.jpg

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/i-qmrtW8L/0/M/RNSscreen2-M.jpg

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/i-nMN8zkK/0/M/RNSscreen4-M.jpg

3) Settings for Voice Control...
To enable the microphone button on your steering wheel to invoke the Voice prompt (instead of mute) go into the Steering Wheel module - Long Coding - and tick Byte 1 - Bit 3
"MFSW with PTT button installed"

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/i-4sXB3Z5/0/M/Steering3-M.jpg

Change Byte 1 in the Telephone module to "Voice operation active".

http://camerooney.smugmug.com/Other/Random/i-MvRbqwx/0/M/RNSscreen5-M.jpg

Now this is where it gets tricky...Bluetooth works, calls work but voice control doesn't. So if I press the button on the RNS510 it chimes at me and prompts to say a command but it doesn't register when you say anything. I'm still looking into this and haven't found a solution yet.

awesome write up cam ! are you going to keep the rcd510 or move it on?

which seller did you buy the rns510 from out of curiosity ?

how is the adidas going for you? im contemplating to buying a new one soon. however the lack of sunroof ones are annoying me alot !

again awesome install, easier than the mk5, which takes 20 mins compared to your 5 min !!!

does your rns510 enable the radio "rds" function so it displays song playing on radio?

let us know how it goes :)

cheers, ray

Cam - fantastic write up as always. When I originally installed my RNS I put the GPS arial in the same spot you did. My satellite reception was ok but not great. I have sinced moved it, and have better reception. Worth a few extra steps while you have the tools out

Firstly remove the vents by undoing the 2 screws holding them in place and then using your trim tools to pull them out
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3098/5848016778_42aa7202a4_z.jpg

Once the vents are out you should have something that looks like this:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2270/5803689793_a719967b56_z.jpg

Then place your GPS arial up above the vent slot. This space is free of any metal or major obstacles that might block sat reception. You can tuck the arial leed neatly out of the way so that it does not impede the air flow across the vents:

Put everything back in reverse order and you're good to go!

Ray,

Yep will be selling the RCD510. I just need to chuck and Ad up in the classifieds section.
I purchased the RNS510 from an ebay seller called used_parts_specialists
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VW-MFD3-RNS-510-passat-golf-Version-D-RNS510-LED-STAR-/220782900795

The Adidas is going great!
My only gripe is that I do too many kms lol but thats not the car's fault.
:p

When I bought mine there was only one available for sale in white with a sunroof. Really hard to come by. If you persist you might see the odd one turn up though.

Yeah the MKV was a bitch of a job. Taking the dash apart was a nightmare. So glad VW redesigned that in the MKVI. Saves a lot of swearing and sweating.

I'm not sure about the RDS setting. It probably does, although I'm not sure that any of the radio stations down in regional NSW where I am would be transmitting RDS. I'll check it out tomorrow for you. I know it was a feature on the RCD510 so I can't see why it wouldn't be on the RNS.

Thanks for the extra info Chris!
I contemplated putting it up there and taking the vents out but I thought I'd try the easier option first. So far I have decent satnav coverage (in terms of the total number of tracked satellites) but I'll keep an eye out on it.
Thanks for the photos.

Yes she is

Cam my satnav antenna is in a similar spot (but MKV version) and my reception is fine until there is a cloudy night, then I'll be lucky to get coverage anywhere..

Starting to look for a more permanent solution, only takes one failure to get the shits :P

Cam are you saying the RNS510 Version D has a brighter and clearer screen than the version C L.E.D. Great DIY. Nice Touch to the car.

No probs - yeah mine was ok but not fantastic and no matter what, it would never get more than like 70% of available satellites - its better now.

I was comparing it to the revision B RNS510 I had in my previous MKV GTI.
I haven't compared it side by side to a revision C unit (next time I'm over MrX's place I will)

Thanks mate.

First post updated with coding information on how to enable the microphone button on the steering wheel to invoke the voice prompt.

Now if I could just get the nice lady in the RNS to listen to me and stop saying "Pardon..Pardon.." I'll be right
:p

I have done the same upgrade in my Golf VI Cab and have the same issue, although this write up includes a few extra coding things for me to double check, although I don't hold out much hope.

Does yours ever work? The reason I ask is that I was told that the factory mic is only for calls and not voice controls, I was also told there is a way to make it work but it's not something I have bothered looking into as yet. The alternative of course being to add a second mic, again not that I have looked into how to go about this.

Hi Aaron,

Unfortunately I was never able to get it working.
Did quite a bit of research on it at the time and didn't come up with anything conclusive.

Initially I thought it was going to be a really easy thing to fix with coding, but it looks like the alternative of adding a second mic might be the solution.

How important is it to put the unit you are removing in transport mode Cam?

I didn't know about this function when i removed my RCD510.

Cam

Hey Darren,

Probably not all that important.
From what I've read it only locks the CD changer component in the unit to prevent movement if in transit i.e postage/freight. Not sure if it performs any other function than that.

I can't see how that would be any different to driving over a really rough road though under normal operation.
I'd say you're fine and completely safe
:)

There is usually 2 mic needed... 1 for vioce control and 1 for bluetooth.

Checkout seller 'bluewagen' on ebay... he sells a cable that allows one mic to do both voice and bluetooth.
