View Full Version : Mk3 Golf, 2 doors and no idea
I'm Jack,
This is my 1996/97 Mk3 Golf,
It's red, its very slow, and its pretty boring to drive, but i still like it.
Plans are for some better wheels, maybe BBS, no reps though
and for some dcent street coil overs to get some low into it.
Just ordered superpro rear beam bushes, and a new brake master cylinder + new fixing hardware for it.
So hopefully i can start getting this on its way to being a decent looking + ok handling nugget.
Cheers.
Pics of yesterdays progress:
painted front lip black, had a go at fxing a big tow ball dent in front bar, its much better, but nowhere near perfect, had a quick beat at the metal filler panel under the grill, painted it black, needs a buff, got my front indicators and headlights back to a shine. Did a few other little things, but here is some pics.

Welcome J!! I know how you feel, I own a Mk3 and I am always being tailgated and over taken. But yes I still like it.
Keep going. It will be rewarding to see the fruits of your labour. Nice car.

Car looks good mate, getting some quick progress done! I think I vaguely remember seeing this on Watercooled a while back? Or maybe it was someone else. I dont know  If your hubs were 5-stud I would offer my VR6 BBS stockies up for sale as I'm upgrading to Mk4 GTI wheels, but since they're not... :(

Yeah, its a pain in the ass going from the 180sx with 180rwkw, to the golf with like 40fwkw..

Thanks, hopefully i don't get too OCD over it, and start taking too much stuff off..
Damn that's some quick work there J.
Yeah, i like to start quickly and work pretty solid, soon as i see a little thing i could do, i do it asap :P
next is cleaning all the rubber window seals with a tooth brush, to get all the dirt and crap out, and taking teh roof racks off to clean teh roof underneath the rubber seals, and give the roof racks a clean up to go back on.

This was on watercooled from the past owner, i wish i had 5 stud right now, but all in good time..
Does anyone know if a VR6 uses the same rear beam, just with different brakes/hubs?
Getting new wheels on Saturday,
and tomorrow is either coil overs or 50" Panasonic so i can get rid of my LG pile of crap.
Hard decisions...
So, decided to keep my shitty LG TV,
and thus, i now have,
JOM coil overs (will see how they go for now!)
Stubby antenna,
Superpro rear beam bushings,
new meyle front strut top's,
BFI Engine mount's + interts
new master cylinder for non ABS,
and picking up my wheels tomorrow :)
Might pick up some oils, filters and give the motor a propper service while im working on it, but will see how lazy i am, might just take it to the workshop for that.

Haha thanks bro, it came together pretty sick, still wasn't 100% on the wheels till i put them all on and dropped it down..

Thanks, still trying to work out the perfect height, front seems to be perfect, rear just needs another cm lower maybe.
Also, my driver side headlight feel apart last night, and the reflector just boun ces around inside, somehow it snapped the white clips that hold it in.... not impressed.

If you heat up the back of the bumper with hot air gun it'll pop out easy and stay there. Not sure the paint will stay on the front spoilers though, I have always got them back to black with the hot air gun again. Warm them gently and then use tyre foam or something to black them right up.
Most be a shocker losing all that power though, have to learn about conservation of momentum. I think that was one of Newton's Laws. >D

Working really quick J! The headlight problems is very common on our cars. The headlight adjusters are weak as and are prone to breaking.
I will just get some black twin lights then i guess.
and going to get a twin slat grill soon. then its time to sart saving for a written off VR6
Not many real updates, stubby antenna is on,
i do require some help though, what oil's should i be running in the 1,8 mk3 motor (if you can call it that :@)
and what oil for the gearbox?
+ammounts?
nice work J, lookin good! I love how quick you attack your cars, I used to be like that, too lazy now :(

Looks sweet Jack :)
What wheels/specs?
Roofliner and resto work is good form.
Thanks guys!
Wheels are some Japanese made 16x7.5 +38 i think, or +34.
the front is flush suprisingly, the rear will need about 20mm to get it to the right point.

I've have heard Redline box oil isn't too shabby for cleaning things up in the VW's....
What suprised me is my gearbox is very, very good.
smooth shifting, always perfect, reverse does have a crunch if i dont engage it properly and just throw it in, but otherwise my gearbox should last.
and put the car on the hoist on sat, retightened a few things, checked the bushes and checked for leaks, all good.
Just have to retard the timing slightly as its pinging on 98RON.
and going to buy a new mixer and some new studio monitors, so not gonna get parts for a little while :)

Looking good! So whats next a 1.8T 20V transplant?
I wish i could have a 1.8..
been so tied up between a 1.8t, or a vr6..
The problem being, do i really want to spend a lot of money on this, or save it for something much better..
in other news, completly pulled apart my headlights, but all the clips were demolished, so i plastic welded them all up, painted them all black bar the inner reflector, and then...
all the clips snapped in all new places. So damn annoying.

hmmm red 3 door cl with rola roof racks and previous front end damage...i might have owned this car before! if its the same one the owner after me didnt take care of it unfortunately.
anyways im loving the tartan roof tho u really need to paint that front grill :P
was the front end damage from a tow ball?
yeah, when i got it, brakes were fucked, timing was fucked, idle, car was dirty as hell, drove like shit.
i replaced a heap of crap to get it where it is, i like the grill being black, whole car needs a paint in reality, but i would much rather a better car than spend a bit of money on this..
