Looking at upgrading the battery to an Optima red or Yellow top

Anyone know what specifics I need to know in terms of what amps the battery needs etc?

What's wrong with the stock one, just after something better?

Would help to find out what the stock one is first. The R32 battery is a Varta 640A IIRC.

hmmmm deka would be a bit too small for me i think C.....more focused on a strong solid battery than small and lightness. I think papafox got the same one as tendy

I wouldn't get one any smaller than OEM as there are plenty of electronics and sensors etc that go off in sleep modes etc and you could get a flat battery in 3 days with a small one.

yeah exactly greg....thats why a strong solid battery like the optima is what I had in mind but just wnated to know if they were compatible?

also, might later on invest in a ctek battery charger

Did you get your battery issue sorted stephen8512?

The battery we usually install is the Optima D35 (which is basically the right hand terminal version of the D34). :D

Howdy all,

I have a 2006 VW Golf 1.6 petrol manual, and I think the 5 year old battery has lost a cell as it does not seem to be accepting a charge.

I have a very basic question - is this battery a lead calcium battery or a lead acid battery? I want to replace it with a like for like battery.

I noticed that the battery fitment guides from various different battery manufacturers are quite different - most of them have the right dimensions, but some are specifying lead acid, and others are specifying lead calcium. Since lead calcium requires a higher voltage to charge compared to lead acid, I am wondering what the VW Golf 1.6 engine uses.

On a different make and model vehicle, I once fitted a lead acid battery to the vehicle which required lead calcium - the higher charging voltages killed the lead acid battery over a short period of two years. I don't want to make the same mistake with the Golf but I haven't worked out what type of battery it uses, i.e. I don't know whether it's the basic lead acid or the more modern lead calcium.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Lawrance
