First purchased my car with the intention of just going a stage 1 APR tune but the bug bit me as it does with all cars  After a while I decided to improve the car slightly in each area without too much drivability/comfort compromise and I am now very happy with the overall package >D>D

Engine
APR Stage 2 software
Carbonio Intake
APR 3" turbo back

Suspension & Brakes
H&R Comfort Cup
Whiteline RSB
DBA slotted rotors
Bendix Ultra pads

Rolling stock
Enkei RPF1 17x7.5
Bridgestone Potenza RE070 225/45

Stock as a rock :icon_neutral:

Stage 1 Tune
After owning for abouuuuut 2 months I was off to get my APR stage 1 tune and shortly after hit the quarter mile at Heathcote. This tune put out 147kw@wheels

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/5980/golf027.jpg

Stage 2 tune
Of course I wanted more POWA so had my eyes open for an exhaust. Ended up coming across an APR 3" system including dump pipe, this was the exhaust they made before the RSC.. a tad drowny!!

http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/843/carbonioon003.jpg

Back to the quarter mile
So with the stage 1 tune putting down a 14.2 @ 97, I was eager to see what I could now acheive.

13.8@101 yet my best MPH was 103 so due to my 60' variation and MPH I knew I could improve but called it a day. STOKED to be in the 13's I was screaming out when I saw the time slip Lol

Suspension
I love my corners so it was weird that I powered up before I addressed my suspension as I normaly like this done first. This HAD to be done now as it was easy to torch the tyres under power when exiting corners due to the body roll and weight transfer to the rear.
Whiteline RSB fitted and these....

This actual kit is the H&R Comfort Cup which gives a 35mm dropp and is meant to be firm yet comfortable. The difference was awesome however the main improvement was from the Whiteline RSB which was fitted before hand >D>D And loving the drop... neater looking Golf now

Yeah mate I'm in melbourne.. I would be up for another dyno day as I missed the last hpf day, my first reading was done on RE customs dyno. Dsg flash sounds good, was charting to fab about his and he loves it but I must restrain myself as I will update with some other car next year

How do you find the RE070's? I'm up for new rubber soon. how much did they sting you?

For dry weather performance I can't speak highly enough of them, the cornering blocks on them are massive which give insane cornering grip and the sidewalls are ultra stiff. They have been a fantastic alternative to a full semi slick. Not the best wet weather tyre which I was expecting anyway, mainly compromised cornering in the wet as breaking and acceleration is still decent in wet.
It took me quite a while to get used to how much grip they offer when warm, tested how big my balls were.
They were standard fittment on r35 gtr, 07 sti and nsx type r.

Few more pics :D Some from trackdays at Sandown and Winton, one was with Fab and Dave R which was a bloody awesome day, we had a ball. It was run by Luke Oneil with some very impressive machinery... 458, Gallardo, DBS, F430 Scuderia etc. was a difficult day driving in wet to dry conditions, at one point the track was damp with a dry line which made it very interesting.

I AM leaning towards the R, what a guess! I checked out a united grey one with the black talladegas on it the other day and it looked very tuff in the flesh, loved it. When I am ready I will go for either a rising blue or united grey, both are great in my opinion and are colors that are greatly complimented from a nice wax :) As for grabbing some V3's now I will have to wait as I need some more snow gear.
LOL the anticipation is awesome, I am sure we have all read through peoples threads hanging for the mods to unfold with a few pics as well... its fucking awesome! Yeah, I'm in the midst of colour coding my gti valences so once that's done, I'll get onto lowering...which will probably cause some paint loss on the front bit when traversing driveways haha!

Awesome sounds like you will be going super low :) Yeah I have been to the forest trails and I love it! The scenery is truly epic like your in a thick rain forest, some trails aren't that technical but there is a great selection there a couple with banked turns, jumps, log hops, gaps, descents, climbs and timber sections.

Blow the dust off this thread!
Didnt want to do much more to my GTI but a couple of DBilas intakes have shown up and I have made a couple of offers, I like these intakes as they are fully covered from the engine bay but dont like that they make a slight harmonic sound in the midrange :( The other reason is Lucas eventually wants his rubber grommits back that I have borrowed for my engine cover ;)

ALso.. have a track day coming up and the RE70's will prob be farked!! Have my mind set on these bad boys as I have read good things about them on other forums...... and what a price!

Its all good Clem! Brand snobs like yourself keep the price of them nice and low so that others can enjoy great bang for buck out of a company that supply tyres for the Asian LeMan Series, American LemMan Series, Super GT (JGTC), IMSA llites and the DTM series. If they are good enough for them then they are good enough for old Adzy :D

Dont regret the LED's at all! Ahh yeh just a few minor things - I've bought the P3 Gauge from Cam on here, just waiting for it to arrive, and I put an order on a set of the interior LED's also. Yeh looks good on the road, your wheels really make it 'pop'.

I'm dying to get some coils but don't wanna splurge the cash out just yet. I'm thinking of getting them from the EU direct when I go for holidays this December to save some coin, just working it all out now and seeing if I will actually end up saving any money.

Ah yeah. any sort of reduction in unsprung weight is a bonus i reckon. Add to that something lie AP Racing BBK's and it should be quite nippy ;)

Do you plan on going to the track often? Would love to see the RPF1's wrapped in some semi's

I have done around 200 laps at various track days in the GTI and usually go for tyres that arent a full semi but tyres that are in between semi and street like the RE070, KU36, RT615 etc

Any further mods in the pipelines?

I keep saying no but then something pops up, I want to trade in for an R next year so will try to keep it how she is.. just more thrashing and replacing tyres is all I realy plan on :D

Yeah bring on the good weather! The melbourne VAG boys will be out in force :D
You will have to suss it out I guess mate, you will save on the shipping costs but then will have to worry about luggage weights and trusting the security of your coils when in luggage area etc.

Hmm they would probably throw out my luggage allowance on the way back, but paying extra for the additional weight won't be no where near as much as paying for shipping alone. If I can get them under 2k (KW-V3's) will definatelly do it, otherwise I'll get em here Jan/Feb next year after I get back.

They know what they are doing and are also OEM tyres for more than 5 manafacturers.

Keep snobbing and spread the snobbery... I want cheap tyres Clemzy!

Went to Heathcote today with Dave and some others. I completed many runs which were terrible and around 2.4 sec 60' times as I just couldnt get traction with the stiff sidewalled RE070's..... but finally at the end of the day she hooked up very well and I managed a 2.0 sec 60' and a ET of 13.68, I wont quote the MPH as the timing gear in Heathcotes left lane is dodgy and showed speeds from 39MPH to 120MPH.

Will post vids when I CBF'd :D

Mate its so bloody hard with an electronic throttle like our cars have, there isnt much feel for how much throttle you are using when in LC on the line. I have found that if you use even 90% throttle on the line that the clutches dont really bite when the brake is released so what I do is use LC with full throttle and then when she bites I lift a tiny bit but basically you just need to get lucky with the thing hooking up.
Lower your tyre pressures to 13 - 20 psi to increase the contact patch too... not sure how you will go with 18's though as there is not much sidewall at all. I also shift at around 5700 rpm instead of redline... seem to pull higher MPH that way as you are staying in the meat of the torque/power a little more.
Practice makes perfect mate... you can hit the 13's with your mods, have fun!

Adzy
03-10-2011, 11:46 AM
Time slips..... MPH on the 13.6 run was an error but based on my previous runs and the 660' MPH it would have been 101 MPH

Bored at work so I might as well post on here!
Time has come for me to start preparing the GTI for sale :( Has been a top car and hasn't missed a beat.. fun, practical and surprises a few ppl that know nothing about VAG (bogans) I was originally looking at other options for my next car but I think I am kind of hooked on VW for the moment in comparison to what else is out there for similar money which is why I have just placed an order, finally, for a Golf R :D :D

So now I have to start thinking about parting out the bits and pieces on the car and get it on the market so I have it sold in time for the R, should be a lot easier to sell a stock GTI than one that has been fiddled with just not sure if it is worth me changing the suspension back to stock again as the labour cost to do so may be close to what the H&R struts and springs are worth.

Hanging for the R now!!

Nah bro this is 100% Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (Gracie Barra) and was started by Australias first Gracie black belt, Peter De Been who was awarded his belt by Carlos Gracie and trained in Brazil with the Carlos. All the techniques we practice are straight from the Gracie's.
Number one team in quite a few events including Pan Pacs and Melbourne International.... keep an eye out for Kit Dale too, he won Abu Dhabi pro gi and silver in no gi... trains MMA and will be in the UFC soon we hope!

Well ladie and gents I have been doing a LOT of thinking lately about my Golf R order and have been asking myself if I really want a Golf R. It did seem like the logical step after a GTI and after getting caught up in the VW hype and all but to be honest it just aint for me :(
Yes the interior is great the build quality is right up there and they are a pretty looking thing with the DRL's, LED's and all but that stuff doesnt get me as excited as response and driving feel or a car that has character and involves you in the drive something that is a bit more animal and lets you drive it how you want to with more feedback and involvement. You have never heard anyone say a Golf R is a HOOT to drive have you? Other than forum members.
I have driven 2 Golf R's, one highly modified and the other bone stock and they did drive effortlessly and easily but with bugger all feedback to the drive and just left me pretty underwhelmed.
So! I have decided to cancel my order and have my eyes set on an ex-demo or used Focus RS and if that doesnt go to plan my back up idea is to grab a new RS250 Megane. Both cars are pure drivers cars with a much more responsive and adjustable chassis which is what I love the most, interior quality not up to par with VAG but who cares.. its about the joy of driving and nothing else.
I aint leaving this forum though, great bunch of doods I will just add a bit more inter-car-racialism on here ;D

Yeah Boi!

Oh have you? The RenaultSport engineers really know how to tune a car dont they! My brother has a RS Clio and that thing is a bloody riot to drive after every drive I have in it I am hesitant to get back into the 'safe as houses' GTI. The only issues I have with Renault are the re-sale value in oz and the support but hopefully that improves as sales for the RS250 have shot up greatly in 2011.

That's exactly the same thought process I had with the Subie. Not as nice inside, nor as comfortable or refined....but fark it makes me smile every time I drive it. Just something about it.

My preference would be the RS! Just because they sound so good.
You might want to PM Jason for a chat (forum member J.T) he just went through a similar selection choosing between a Megane and XR5 Turbo. He ended up with the XR5 turbo.

In terms of features...the Ford has recaros, 6 speed, push start, premium sony audio all from stock. Its pretty awesome.

First thing Jason said to me when he bought the car was that it had so much more character than the MKIV, V and VI.

Cam when I was reading your transition to the Rex I was totally feeling where you were coming from and it got me thinking. I just havent had that feeling with VW as they do lack character in a big way and thats what enjoying a car is all about IMO. I want those days back where you cant stop grinning after a drive :D

Adzy....regarding your decisions and your thoughts about the Golf R lacking character...I totally agree. And I own one!

heres my quote from this link back in september last year :

http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?2727-Negatives-on-the-Golf-R&p=127065&viewfull=1#post127065

The Golf R as a car

Negatives

- Golf R lacks character, sometimes quite lacklustre to drive. GTI has more character than the Golf R.

- For a daily, a manual GTI is much more fun (even when compared to a manual R)

- Does tend to get a bit boring to drive after a while.

- No sense of "uniqueness" about it. E.g It's not a limited edition like the Edition 35/Pirelli GTI, It's not a scirocco where at least that has a sexier body even though it has the same engine, it doesn't have a VR6 engine nor does it have that glorious engine note, it looks like every other golf with a bodykit and LED/DRL's, and even that isn't that unique anymore seeing as how xenons have integrated DRL's and the ADIDAS version came factory with the R LED tail lights.

- harder to differentiate between R's and MK6s compared to a MK6 GTI and a MK6 regular golf. MK5 GTI's vs MK5 Golf's were recognisable instantly, as well as MK5 R32's. (could be a good thing, depending which way u look at it though)

- Feels like its been made from leftovers. (e.g, engine coming from what was originally in an Audi S3, MK6 golf chassis which isn't much different to the MK5, if not almost identical. Could argue that the Pirelli and the Scirocco have the same engine but at least they have something unique to each of them. Pirelli was limited edition, 400 delivered to aus, Scirocco has a much much sexier body)

- Interior is functional, but ultimately dull and very gray

- Xenon headlight washers suck when you want to wash your windshield and you have ur lights on, especially after a good car wash. (not just specific to the Golf R though, any Golf with xenons)

- Personally so sick of seeing white Golf R's with black wheels. Mine too at times! Just become so damn common.

- Door creaks still not fixed, even from the MK5's. A 60K+ car with a door creak issue from the MK5's? Still not fixed properly?

- For those with 19" talladegas, CRAP TURNING CIRCLE!!!

Positives

- Spec'ed with options, inside can be a nice place to be. Lots of creature comforts to be had!

- Straight forward bolt on mods + tune will see it potentially reach 200+ kw atw and a 4 second car.

- Easy to mod with go fast bits

- Lots of aftermarket support currently available + when the US gets hold of their R's expect to see the marketplace flood with parts for the R over the next few years.

- Audi S3 for for 20K less, which doesn't skimp on quality either. German engineering through and through.

- Better on fuel compared to the R32 (2.0L turbo vs 3.2L V6)

- So much info out there on the EA113 engine that any problems which may happen, there's a plethora of info out there which is bound to have an answer or a fix/cure.

- Though it won't be the King of any one thing, it's the Jack of all trades. Can do little bits of everything, and quite well too.

And this is coming from someone who owns a Golf R as well and trying to be as unbiased as possible, which I believe I have achieved in that post.

Going from a MK5 GTI to a MK6 Golf R...to be honest you're better off staying with the GTI cuz I'm telling you now it wont "feel" like much of an upgrade. Sorta like upgrading from an iphone 3G (not 3GS) to the new iphone 4S. Rudimentary example but u get my point.

If you're set on changing though, then the RS250 and the Focus RS you have posted up are both fantastic choices mate. When I test drove a Focus RS I was thinking of getting one in Green as its a pretty in your face colour from factory. Plus only 315 examples are here in Australia so exclusivity is right up there. I decided in the end not to get the RS because 1) I ultimately wanted 4 doors and 2) RevoKnuckle or not, its still a FF car with a shedload of power going through the front wheels...and I wanted to try FR or AWD as I've never owned anything other than FF cars previously. However in saying that, the car handled very well and it pulls hard! The exhaust note is just as nice as an R32 with a kreissieg or a capristo. It's up there, even with just a milltek exhaust it sounds fanfkntastic! I'm with Cam as well that I'd want one JUST for the exhaust note.

The Megane RS250 is another great option. Precise gear throws and it just feels nimble as anything. Feedback from the wheel is great and compared to the Focus RS, the body is more scirocco-esque with those lines...very svelte. Although its also an FF car, its pretty cool when you throw it into a corner...it just sticks! And looking at your past history ur not afraid to track your cars so I can only imagine how much fun you could have with the RS250 on a track!

It looks to be a winner whichever way you decide to go and this goes without saying but the decision all comes back down to you. Out of the two, personally I'd choose the Megane RS250 because when looking at the cars side by side, the Focus RS looks like a toy and it does look like a boy racer at times and although the RS250 isn't exactly oozing sophistication in terms of looks, its still looks a bit more sensible to drive on a daily basis whilst still retaining some of that boy racer charm.

Summed up really well there Stephen.

In amidst other reasons I think that's the main thing I disliked about the MKVI GTI so much. Its still a great car, but after owning two MKV's...and changing to the VI, it still feels like a MKV but a lesser version to some extent? Definitely not worth the money for upgrading I don't think (unfortunately I learn't that the hard way). The money I lost on the MKVI Adidas would have more than paid for the expensive 120k service and anything that needed to be fixed on the V GTI lol.

Whilst the MKVI's are still really refined and very nice inside, to me they don't feel as good in terms of quality. Some people define quality differently to me maybe...but my MKVI had rattles galore, door creaking, cabin noises etc. My MKV had very few rattles, felt better built and more solid on the road. The lesser build of the MKVI might not be noticeable to new owners, but I'm sure anyone who has owned a MKIV or MKV would notice a difference straight away. Disappointing really. Even my family noticed the difference as well...and we've had 5 Golfs in the family over the past few years of differing models and years.

Getting back to the Megane and RS...one of the things Jason said was that the Megane was the driver's car. Steering/suspension/throttle input and feel is all so precise and raw.
Raw to the point that he said you are really very in touch with the car. The only bad thing about this is he mentioned it was too much to handle as a daily driver and not all that comfortable. Defining comfortable as a whole in terms of suspension, seating position, cabin noise etc. This is where the Focus jumped ahead. I did briefly look at the XR5 Turbo before I bought the MKVI but was immediately turned off in the photos by what I thought was a tacky dash and a crappy looking interior. It wasn't until I sat in one at a dealership that I realised it was far from the case and it feels very well built, with all the standard euro type features (one touch indicator, dimming cabin lights, MFD etc). Then in terms of value it has standard inclusions like the Recaros and premium sony audio w/MDI and bluetooth (which I think is much better than the VW Dynaudio package personally). I made the mistake of looking at things on face value and not paying attention to how the car actually felt to drive as a whole, got way too caught up with specs on paper and spec/tech comparisons. Its great to see you aren't making my mistake haha...you've saved yourself money and disappointment
:p

Will be interesting to see what you pick!
Who knows...maybe another car will come and steal your love and attention.

Adzy....regarding your decisions and your thoughts about the Golf R lacking character...I totally agree. And I own one!

heres my quote from this link back in september last year :

http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?2727-Negatives-on-the-Golf-R&p=127065&viewfull=1#post127065

I agree with pretty much everything you have mentioned about all 3 cars Stephen :D Talk about not holding back on your thoughts about the Golf R! Most ppl that own one become a little biased so a bit surprised at your thoughts on it, what are your future plans with it? Keep it for a bit or sell?

The RS250 does impress me in areas where the RS doesnt also, the classyer less boy racer looks is a plus for sure not to mention the lighter weight and better ergo's and quality of interior, I do also like the aggressive looks of the Focus though but it would go against you when turning up to certain places in it where you would look like a toss due to its boy racer looks. I still wonder about the re-sale of the RS250 though as we know how French cars dive in value however it looks as though the RS250 is doing ok, time will tell I guess.

I have heard this about the MKVI quiete a bit from ppl moving up from a MKV, bit dissapointing really and I guess it would be easily noticed as the MKV's feel pretty much bomb proof in build quality (not chassis rigidity though). Have never heard of a rattle out of my MKV just the creeking of the soft play dough chassis and clicking of sub-frame bolts which has been the only real turn off to me.

I think I could live with an RS250 in the sense of it being a bit stiff/raw for everyday use as most of my cars end up low and bone jarring stiff :D Yes it is uncomfortable at times when you hit a solid rut in the road or pothole but I usually smille afterwards rather then cringe as it is just a reminder that you have a corner eating machine lol love that shit!

Will see how I go, one thing is for sure that I am very excited towards whatever car I end up with... hopefully one car stands out to me a lot more after a drive than the other as I dont want to do my head in too much over it!

Yeah I usually say it like it is. Me owning one wont change the fact that there are some flaws in the Golf R's appeal. But I can also understand why others are a tad biased about their Golf R's too and rightly so. And again, its just my feelings towards the car. Others may feel differently altogether and that could be them being unbiased too.

I do plan to keep the Golf R for a while longer despite the "negatives" i wrote in my post. Its only been 1 year since I took delivery of it. For me, although the car lacks character in certain areas, it does the job of daily driving and other things quite well and for me right now, it doesnt make sense to sell it just yet. It's given me many ideas on how to mod the car to give it that little special something that I feel the car is missing from factory.

Yeah the Focus RS is such a BEEFY car. It's certainly a head turner especially when you see one in green. It has that look of "dont fk with me" about it from the front. But yeah it does look boy racerish but again I think thats part of its character and appeal to some...unfortunately it isnt for me.

RS250 doesnt seem to be doing too bad in the resale department? Given the fact that french cars go down as quick as holdens, the RS250 seems to be doing well. It's light weight as you said and you can feel that lightness when swinging the car around a corner and as I said, it sticks. Soo much fun to be had there mate! As you and Cam said, it is raw and very much the drivers car. The Focus RS has a bit more creature comforts to be had however and may be a tad more comfortable from stock but seriously, when you drive it, comfort takes a back seat. TO live with I think the Focus RS would be slightly better as it has a bit more comforts and a slightly bigger boot but since you're going to mod whichever car you buy anyway, its a bit of a moot point...

I saw an RS250 about 2 weeks ago in graphite, lowered and it had on what looked like OZ superturismos (or could be team dynamics). Looked really nice!

Hey Adam, have you considered the Scirocco R?
I haven't as much as the focus and megane mainly due to them being made for a similar market to the golf r, sensible and safe yet quick. I do know they have slightly better steering feel to the golf, less weight of course and wider track etc. but still think it won't be the raw experience that I am after.
However.. whilst canceling my golf r order I had a good chat to crist from burwin about my decision and why I made it and he totally understood where I was coming from and told me I should test out one of their scirocco r's to which I replied why the fuck not :D Crist is very impressed with them so I will try to grab a drive of one very close to when I drive the focus and megane.
I know he is a salesman but we had a long genuine chat about our favourite rides and what we want out of a car etc.. top bloke he is!

BenR this is Adzy's build thread so please have some respect and use PM's.
Also PM me your thoughts about putting a turbo in my R32 and 'running in' at 30 PSI before cranking it up to over 9000. Will I be able to beat a WRX with a fluffy dice on my rear view mirror? Maybe I should upgrade to the Crucifix ?

Over 9000

Kind of like my old SW20Mr2.. purchased for 19k spent 12k on it and sold for 9k, major investment fail but the drive was epic and after each drive I couldnt stop smiling!
