Hey guys. I was just wondering for the guys out there who have or considered upgraded from the mkv GTI stock CD unit to an aftermarket Sat Nav GPS/music player. Which model did you guys choose and which unit would give the cleanest look.
Pics and feedback will be great!
Buy a factory setup you will get a warranty with it..

Heh, take a look at the RNS510 thread here - http://www.vwgolf.net.au/showthread.php?492-RNS-510-(HW-version-C)
From what I have read the Wd6050 had more issues than pleasures. A huge thread exists on golfmkv.com about it. Read it for yourself. The price of the RNS510 has come down and I personally think this is the best to use on our Golfs.

I had a W6050 unit and no problems with it. I changed to RNS-510 only because I always wanted it and it aws too expensive to buy when I was buying the car. But agreed that mine was prob one in a million that worked perfectly with no battery drain etc.....theres prob more crap W6050 units than good ones. But W6050 unit is good in that
- you dont need kufatec motion video to view DVDs on the go
- had a USB slot which you could put up to 160gig 2.5" HDD to it
- you can watch .WMV and .AVI video files (i had a DVD in the cd slot, my episodes of how i met your mother in the USB slot and MP3 via ipod)
- you can hook it up to your ipod (albeit the integration was shit)
- bluetooth (although integration was shit)
- possible to hook up DVB-T to it, but too much work
- to be honest, I actually prefer the GPS in the W6050 unit (iGo8 NAV).
but like I said, there are more units with problems than fixes. One being the major battery drain.
In all other aspects, the RNS-510 is a lot nicer all round. Crisper graphics, better menu interface, MFD compatible in terms of GPS navigation, regular firmware update and support locally if something happens to go wrong. If the W6050 unit goes wrong, all u have is the forum to see if anyone else is experiencing or have experienced that problem or send the unit back to China's factory and risk never seeing it again

RNS510! Ps, i think there's a group buy on now.
or get a decent quality audio brand. None really work as seemlessly as the factory one though.

The Alpine 7" screens are awesome, i had a W502E. Great sound and quality. Nice being able to plug the ipod/camera straight in and don't need any expensive video in motion devices either. I heard there could be new all-in-one out mid year, could be interesting as the separate bluetooth/nav add-ons didn't work as well as they could have. Was much happier with the RNS-510 and Audison BitOne, but after market HU's still have a slightly cleaner signal even if the BitOne does do wonders, but good enough IMO.
Any other car i'd prob just get another HU, but the VW stuff does interface and work very well.

Gotta agree with the guys here...the RNS is one of the most highly regarded units around. If you really wanna look into the aftermarket scene tho I've got some mates using the Eclipse Navi unit which does the job. If you want I can put you in touch with an audio company that do really top notch work, I'm good mates with all the guys there and John (illektronik) can back me up that they do a really high quality job :)

Thanks for the info. I agree with you guys with the point, nothing better than getting an original VW unit. I'll have a further look into these RNS-510

Yeah, the AVN units are pretty good, they run IGO8 i think.

Sounds like FHRX..
May as well contribute a pic of my Alpine installation, Northfield Moorooka did a great job preparing the facia to match and sounded awesome with the H701 processor. (All the steering wheel controls, ipod & camera worked perfectly, quicker than navigating with the MDI ipod kit as well) :

Absolutely. You'll actually get a better sound signal out of the Eclipse than you would the RNS-510. The output tends to crap themselves after about half way up the volume slider.
I still like the RNS-510's OEM integration though.
With the BitOne i could have the vol almost all the way up, but it's also a function of when the amps/power craps out, not just the signal i think?

I agree Chris, can't really go past the stock one but I didn't want to pay 3k for it.

Chris I went with the RNS in my new golf and doubt I'll ever look back. Like John has mentioned, the BitOne apparently is great. I'm most likely going to drop one in. I haven't heard one in a car yet but the FHRX guys are lining a car up for me to hear it in. my mate told me they've always shown it to a customer stock vs what it can do and no-one has ever wanted to stay stock, so that's gotta say something!
How does ipod navigation go with the RNS-510?
I have previously had an alpine single din unit and the ipod navigation was incredibly easy and worked really well, almost thinking of getting one similar to the one posted above.

Yeah I have a BitOne and had an extensive setup in my last Golf (was probably the best in AUS that i knew of) and sounded great with the stock HU. Still not quite as good signal as other aftermarket HU's but worth it for the integration and OEM look/. the VW/Skoda bluetooth and RNS510 Navigation are a lot better than anything else out there as well. I trialled the Alpine bluetooth and Nav and it was fairly poor in logic and ease of use, the NAV add on was quite buggy and would freeze up with an error message a fair bit as well as very primative GUI/looks.

There isn't a way to output the iphone picture onto the RNS510, you'd have to be controlling everything on the iphone with the small screen etc.

Ah ok, might try to get a decent alpine unit, i much prefer navigation through the screen/HU than controlling the ipod itself.
Cheers

Or just get an rns510 all the alpine stuff is expensive especially the add ons.
Also the BitOne.1 i as great sounding processor, better than the Alpine H701 IMO (sounds warmer and more lively) and most head units by themselves wont sound the best anyway). However it didn't work for me exactly like stock (ie if wired up to get keyless sound I got a turn-on pop due to the HU staying on because of the sleep modes and HDD etc). Marty seems to have a way around it but would most likely need to be wired up to ignition or by using switchable power for the amps.
We had an aftermarket unit installed in the GT sport for a few months. It was one from ebay, can't remember the brand or model number but it looked similar to the RNS (wasn't the WD6050 though)
We had all sorts of problems with it. Sounds quality was absolutely shite, touchscreen was inaccurate, menus were buggy, menu navigation was awful and to top it off the touchscreen actually broke.
We ended up buying an RNS510 from an ebay seller called navi555 for a little over 1k landed to the door. Genuine unit, not brand new but in as new condition with warranty.
Installed and havent had any troubles since and this was nearly a year ago now. Everything is better in the RNS.
I had an MFD2 in my previous Comfortline which was the unit before the RNS510 came out. The mfd2 is nice but pretty basic.

When I got my GTI I ordered an RNS510 from the same seller and installed it and its been running like a dream ever since.

hi mate...just wondering....did you have to cut any wires or modifications to fit RNS 510 into the GTI? or is it just plug and play? would there be any difference in South African made or German made GTI's? thanks....
oh yeh also, do u have Aussie map loaded into it? if so are they expensive or hard to get.

Plug and Play for the most part but you may need an antenna adapter and some minor vagcom work but thats about it.
Also you need to check what version of CANBUS you have, as earlier models will have battery drain problems without the later model gateway.
Regarding the maps i'm sure someone local to you can help you out with that.
