I've written up DIY myself over the years, but this one is great. Good clear photos of each step and well documented.
Thank you.

I second that, appreciate the time you have taken to pull that down and put it back together.
Very clear instruction indeed. Great write up.
Few question I may:
Does the overall system run faster as well?
Any particular brand or spec of SSD to be used?

You just gave me something to do with 1st Gen 60GB SSD!!
Now just need to find my damn pin code card for the RNS! :(

Fantastic write up, well detailed, and excellent step by step detail. Congratulations.
This thread is going into my VW archive of handy things to know.
When you say does the 'system' run faster, what do you mean? The drive only relates to the reading and writing of maps and music (and in the future –*POIs). If by that you mean system, than yes. All the other HW components are as they were.
Thanks for that info, J
That's what I meant. Faster map is definitely a plus.

Where is the best place to buy an unit from? I need to install a bluetooth unit - so thought I might as well upgrade to a RNS-510. Also, are you able to run the antenna inside the car somewhere?

Couple of questions....
SSD's as far as I know are SATA ports / cables... and this HDD is using a IDE port / cable
Also is this purely for storage or is there OS / Maps loaded on the original HDD how did you transfer it?

So what are you asking? First part is not really a question, so I'm not sure how to answer it. It's an SSD IDE as noted. They do indeed exist.
Read step 12 again. It's a replacement to the original HDD. There is no way to piggy back a second drive within the unit, and even if you could, I think it would be impossible to run a RAID system on their proprietary OS. Their OS would not allow for multiple drives to mount. The maps are simply copied onto the drive via DVD. Just like you would update your maps on a normal unit. If no map is present, it loads them from the DVD. Simple. There is no secret behind it.
I'm more so referring to no operating system is loaded to this disk? Not regarding additional storage, Also do not see what format method is used NTFS or FAT32?
Hrmm where can I source IDE SSD's? most SSD's I see these days are SATA 2/3

Maybe DIY's should be locked threads for this reason.
