Ok guys i saw a little snipit of information from mk5 in Kristan's R32 thread about his car regarding the Vehicle In Motion software upgrade.

So i did some research and came across this website explaining how to make your own CD/DVD to install the update yourself.

I registered but forum members can use my log in saves the hassle of everyone doing it. The thread gives all information on how to make it work, where to download files and the like and how to make the cd/dvd.

There are allot of people saying it works. Il add a link from an australian web site.

So you computer wizz kids try this and report back how it goes. Im in england at the moment so cant do this till i get home.....Its a good sunday project!!!!!!

The how to thread:

Followed Tippah's link and downloaded the files. Installed them as per instructions over lunch time, everything went as it should and my unit restarted with full functionality. Now I've dug around at work and found a DVD to test out on the way home. Will let you all know tonight, and if its worked I'll bring the disc along to the next few meets.

Ok, newbie question... can anyone tell me how I figure out what software/hardware version my RNS510 is running? Obviously I'm keen to make sure I dont screw my unit trying to load software older than what is already on the unit.

I tried to look min setup to find the version and can't for the life of me..
Anyone with an idea what version the above link is for? And how to access our cureent version.

According to various bits of info http://www.my-gti.com/1200 they say you hold the SETUP button and the unit enters some kind of setup. I tried this but no luck.

Any chance you can burn it and mail to me :p

I'm expecting a data cable and some software arriving soon to revamp the settings in the NAv unit, apparently changes colors, lets you bypass the safety setting on the DVD player etc

To enter the "special" setup mode you have to hold down setup for like 20 seconds - much longer than you think you need to. Also - I changed the adaptation of channel 50 to "1" through VCDS before I did this and then rebooted the unit - although not sure this is needed for firmware above 3000?

Nar im not charging 10 for the money, just to cover some effort and the disk and post. Just dont rat me if this becomes an issue hahaha! If you are keen, pm me with your address and you can pay via pay pal or bank deposit, then ill send it out. Or if you in melbourne come pick it up from mine or just grab a copy off me at the next meeting... etc

I mentioned this in mk5's build thread but never got an answer.

Can I just ask how this actually works? Pop it in, load, then take it back out and VIM is active.... I mean, im just very curious that a disc can activate the VIM, whereas KUFATEC felt the need to develop a whole new piece of add-on hardware to the RNS510 to be able to do that?

Good man Stefan...Should be more people like you - It's only fair to get your initial investment back and even make a few bucks for your effort but not right to try and rip people off especially on a forum that's meant to help people out.

Its concept is that it updates part of the firmware to allow the unit to play them, i dont fully understand it and i was extremely hesitant, but my doubt was forgotten when the bastard kicked over and started playing borat!

Stephen, it basically modifies the firmware of your RNS, its the same concept as when you upgrade the BIOS on your PC Mobo, you get extra functionality.
Or better yet when VW releases ECU updates for fixes on the Golf's, its pretty much software that controls the underlying hardware.

Just realised that I can't find out my firmware version without vagcom, the car is brand new though so I would assume it's the latest. Do you think the cd would work for me? If so PM me maybe I can compensate you for the trouble of burning me a copy if you would be so kind.

Ryan

In the cars settings, there is a setting that tells the screen at what speed to turn off, usually 10km/hr. The CD simply changes that value to 300km/hr. So in theory if you went 301km/hr the video would be disabled again.

Sorry to dig up this thread, but i finally had the chance to do it on my MY12 R

Unfortunately it didnt work!

The disk did its thing, got halfway then said that the version I had on the unit was the same version number as on the disk, hence refused to do the "upgrade".

Any hints?

You need to enable software downgrade. Its part of the test menu which can be enabled via either VCDS or a modified firmware CD.
