hi guys, as the title states, which one would you choose and why. I'm leaning towards a used R32, I find the car a lot more 'direct' than the gti. Love the linear power delivery of the R32 and the fact it corners like its on rails.
I've got service quotes from VW, and the 4th year service is close to $3K. Something to do with the 4wd system, and I don't think that included the timing belt change. which is a further $700-$800. To me its a little on the pricey side, in Q7 territory. Where do you guys get your R32s serviced at ?
As for the GTi... the turbo gives a nice push, but i'm not too confident about stepping on it mid-corner.
flame away... ? :P

$3k seems a bit steep
typically, for a dsg / haldex and oil change, you're looking at $1200 from your local VW dealer.
i'd check with another dealer

Sounds expensive. Where are you based? There's good specialists everywhere - The Haldex service shouldn't be expensive, and I've done my own (All the bits can be bought on line including Haldex fluid). In Brisbane there's Michael Webber who a lot of people on here would recommend (And I've used before). There's a couple in Sydney (Sydney siders can chime in).

Pros and Cons for both. I'd recommend driving both if you haven't already.
It depends what you want!! If you want a front wheel drive or awd.. To me it's an easy choice..

Take both for a spin, awd was the big selling point for me and 3k for service is way to steep, shop around.

Shame the AWD also adds weight and dulls down the ride, also expensive tryin to add power being a non turbo.
At least with the used R32 the values have dropped, I shouldn't have bought a new one though (sold now).

AWD dulls down the ride? You're joking right?
One thing i love doing it is smashing it through corners, hit the apex, then power out with all four wheels gripping the road like crazy. Its like you're on rails...it just keeps gripping and gripping and gripping..
Power wise, yeah its no STI/EVO. But its not that far behind either.
So much R32 bashing Greg..Geezz...One would think your heading towards a FWD car or something?

The AWD experience is an acquired taste. Some people don't like the "assisted" feel when driving through corners & other do.
I personally like a rear wheel drive + LSD, it has a race car feel. Anyhow plenty of options to choose from these days.

How can you pass up one of the best sounding exhausts the happy side of $250k!!! That's even after you put on a capristo or Kreissegg!!!
Have a drive, see what you are happy with. To be honest when I chose I had my heart so set on an R that I didn't even consider the GTI so easy choice for me.
They are both great cars.

Not sure i described it properly but AWD is much easier to drive so maybe that's it.. Leaves less for driver error.
Of course it's better than FWD but found the r32 needed more power being 200kg heavier than the GTI, hense to make it more 'fun'.
I'll prob get a mk6 GTI as they are pretty good bang for euro buck and the XDL helps it from getting out of shape. Good enough around town anyway.
These cars are two very different beasts.
As mentioned. Drive them both and see what you think. I did when I was looking to purchase a few years ago and the GTI was just so much more fun around town. The strange thing is its fun in my mind because it has less grip and it has a less linear power delivery.
R32 makes an awesome noise and is well planted. But well planted is boring :D.
Give me pops, farts, sideways squirming under brakes, throttle that requires modulation otherwise you wheelspin like crazy, sharper turn-in and overall a car that just has more character.
I prefer a car that is engaging to drive. AWD doesnt really do much for me. Gimme light fwd or a nicely balanced rwd car pls.

Thanks for the reply guys. Sounds like the maintenance costs aren't as high as I thought. To answer some of replies, I'm located in Sydney, the dealer whom I made the inquiry from is Denlo Group in Parra. I got a shock when I was told the costs myself and thought that couldn't be right. I should have rang around a few more dealerships first.
The R32 may not be fast as an STi/Evo but its a very good package as a whole, power is sufficient but not a hand full, build is solid, ride is confidence without being harsh, overall its lacking in power compared to more (some would say) 'hardcore cars', but i this one I can live with everyday. I've driven test driven both GTi and R32... I can't go pass the sound... the grip.. the sound... the stance.. the grip.. the sound... the linear power delivery... did i mention the sound?? :P
There are some nice mods done by members here.. I hope they wouldn't mind me copying some of them.
on a side note, I hope I didn't create a .:R32vsGTi thread :(

Hahahah Don't worry, both of the car are awesome, we loved GTI and R32 :)

Greg,
What a change of tune! Now looking to buy a GTI I see.
What happened to the R32 love? Was she not nimble or fast enough for you? >D

basically but wasn't planning on a GTI but started looking at cheap cars and before you know it I'm back looking at MK5 GTI's then new ones.
Wanted something a bit faster and ruled out FI.
Don't want to spend as much as last time ie new R, but wouldn't mind the change. They are both great cars in their own right but also wanted DSG so the missus can drive it if need be.

Everyone always love their cars more than others (but they secretly love other people's cars more than their own ). In the end of the day so long as well all love and/or respect all golfs then we'll all be off on a good ride for years to come :)

Don't worry, everybody love there cars and everyone elses.. It would be boring if we all had the same cars..

That's why everyone is now buying Candy white!!! Now if only every car was the same I suggest AP's will be the model car. AWD, Turbo 3.2!!!

Ahh yes...living in the past, was referring to his R32 beastie he already has.
I would like to add a new spin on this....what about MKV GTI Pirelli OR MKVI GTI?
Which would you choose between these two?

If you could find a nice Pirelli that suited what you want it would be a good option, as they are a limited edition and have the bigger turbo etc (but also more lag).
There weren't many around when i was looking, except a demo Pirelli at my local dealer who wanted too much and i got my new GTI with a fair few options for 1k more.
Depends what you want - if going DSG I think you'd want a car with warranty (ie 07 - 08 GTI), and then extend it perhaps. Comes down to finding one in the colour/options/price you want but i dont have any regrets getting a MK6 yet and they are pretty nice cars.
