That crazy Japanese stuff is super cool! Got to love how whacky those guys can get.

These cars are described in Japan as Kaidō racers (街道レーサー or highway racers), or sometimes yankee style. I'll paste a bit of an explanation of them in here from a mate Kevin/Babalouie on the JDMST forums:

These out-there cars are really inspired by the real race cars in the Group 5 silhouette series of the 70s, like say this:

When you look at this Silvia, you can understand that many boso cars are only a slight exaggeration :) Another word to describe these cars is Garuchan, which is from the Fuji Grand Champion series of races. Of course it's not really taken very seriously, and it's all borderline done as a bit of a pisstake. These cars are mostly put together from rusty wrecks for not much money, and then you go out and cruise with your mates.

Yeah, love that style. Too outrageous for my liking but seeing others do it is awesome!

I clicked on this thread thinking it was about subtle modifications that make you go, "Hmm, what's been done there?"

Edit: ^I'd actually would love to own that two-tone Skyline... maybe minus the star on the hood and the dynamo red oil cooler!

been there, done that. old 1980's nissan leopard on hydro's. exhaust and front bumper had to be removed and shipped seperately as they wouldn't:
a) make it up the ship's ramp
b) clear the berth (exhaust went higher than a truck)
c) wouldnt fit inside the car

rego'd it in melbourne, reinstalled the parts, drove it around for shits and giggles, sold it to some kid in adelaide for $5000. Cost me $4500 (intial car cost was 100 yen).
