so.. i learned a rather important lesson today. If you are a bit OCD about cleaning your car.. and if you get a smudge on your diamond cut rims and want to remove it... always use a clean sponge which wasnt placed on the ground and don't use a toothbrush. They are not as soft as they seem.. :(

Sorry to hear that mate :(

I'd highly recommend Sonax Wheel Cleaner: http://www.amazon.com/Sonax-230200-755-Wheel-Cleaner/dp/B003UT3S6Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1313838727&sr=8-1

Surely a tooth brush couldn't do that??

alas it can. it was the tooth brush of the sponge... i had a bit of grime on the wheel i was trying to scrub off. I couldnt believe when i rinsed the soap away and saw this.. the scratches arent anywhere near as deep as they look. In fact, running your hand over it you dont even feel them. Its like there was some kind of clear coat on the wheels which is an awful lot softer than anything i have ever seen before.... Washed all my previous wheels in the same way and never had anything like this.

I would never think to use a tooth brush..There's much softer materials out there..Tooth brush is hard as %*@!

At least if it's not deep then it can be repaired. Still a shame mate!

maaate, you're holding on too tight!!! Unless it's a show car that you drive once a month... its gunna get scratches anyhow.

it's wear n tear...
i do my best to never ever kerb my rims... alas during the blue mnt cruise, on the 80kph twisties, some road gravel flew into its spokes and left some paint artwork... also chipped my windscreen n front bumper.

and yeah, the diamond cut finish is pita to keep swirl / scratch free. incl oem
detroits.

first step, i use karcher to foam the wheels, then blast them with watet,
ten use warm hot water, car shampoo and clean sponge to clean my wheels.

I'm surprised a toothbrush can cause this damage. Sure as hell staying away from them now when cleaning the fine bits of the car.

like you said mate, this may very well be just your clear coat that has been damadged/scratched - my previous set of wheels came with a full clear coat on them which was prone to stone chips, after about 10k on the wheels there was plenty of stone chip damage on the clear coat (you could actually see that it was the clear coat as it flaked off in a couple of areas). Took them to a mate of mine to buff down and the face was like brand new after a low level cut and polish. wheels were machine face.
