View Full Version : (C)arbitrage - exotics from a lower-cost used market: any stories?

A friend told me about his friend's buying a German Passat for a cost (if he correctly estimated Euro v Cz Crown exchange rates right) of under AUD$10k, from somewhere in western Germany.

That was a 2yr old car. Possibly much lower spec than Aussie cars but it's still an amazing differential, which made me think about whether anyone has interesting experiences with bringing in used RHD exotics from Japan/Hong Kong or LHD cars (race import or old enough to not require RHD conversion).

I thought I might have read about a relaxation on some of the laws on having to convert to RHD, along the lines of being able to import an older car (not necessarily 30yrs+) and being able to drive it RHD if it's on a club registration.

Even if I'm wrong on the details here (may have been NSW or elsewhere and I believe RHD's not required in WA anyway), who has some info of interest on some nice gear for a weekend hobby car?

Caterham, Lotus, an old Ford or something interesting from the UK or some German fun car from Germany, other Euro locations or something originally exported or made in the US? Any nice 1970s Porsche?

Thanks if you have any good info. Of course we can all read AP's amazing Lotus Exige build thread and quiz him on importing from NZ! Another avenue of interest.

I don't mean grey market Jap imports as there is plenty of info available elsewhere and all the good stuff has been here so long now.

Thanks!
