Hey guys, just trying to find a place to fix my stupidity...

Today at a carpark I was in a rush and slightly smashed my left side mirror... The plastic covering (indicator part) snapped off and from the way I hit the mirror, it slightly bent therefore the mirror itself went into the silver part and scratched it...

So looking for a place that would replace the plastic indicator part and possibly buff the minor scratch out...

Any help would be appreciated and estimate cost?

I would imagine your dealer will be able to provide the part number for the plastic indicator. In fact take it there & they should sort it out no questions.

Take this as an opportunity to get yourself some inpro smoked indicator lenses from www.dubaddiction.com.au ($75) and they have satin black mirror covers that may look trick on your car ($100). This will be cheaper than dealer fit/buy - These are all pretty easy to replace. I wish you luck!

Thanks for the input guys, went to vw village and asked them how much it would cost to fix... And they said $40 for the part and $95 for labour... But they did say it is a complicated procedure and possibility that the mirror might damage, which would cost $80 to replace but only 1% chance but the risk is still there...

Thanks mikinoz for the suggestion but my car is silver so not too keen on the black covers but I might be interested in the smoke indicators but do I have to install them myself? From the vw village guy, he said it is a complicated job... So not sure if I can do it myself...

Any other vw place you guys would recommend in the inner west/east??

It's not a complicated job, there are scads of DIYs (I think the InPro site may even have instructions).

I've replaced the caps, mirrors (blue tinted), and indicator lenses myself and even with my complete lack of skills it's easy.

The fact that VW Village are telling you it's complicated is a sign that they _might_ be trying to get you to spend money with them.

ohhh... well i'm going to shop around, i'm not a very DIY kind of person... To be honest... i think it is so expensive because the "part" is not just for the plastic indicator cover, it comes with the light etc. therefore, they want to just replace the whole light and cover, probably why they have to take the mirror apart to do that.

In my mind, i was just thinking it is a clip on cover thing..... i was hoping to just go in, clip it on and pay and on my way.

Anyways, there is a vw place in Alexandria, might take a look at that place tomorrow... and might head to barloworld as well and see how much it will cost me... i will also need a slight touch up job on the paint where the mirror digged into the paint.

I wonder how much it would cost to get the WHOLE mirror replaced... save me from going to a paint repair place as well...

Just an update, went to Autohaus Streker in Alexandria today, talked to the guy and he quoted me $46 for the part but only $40 for labour! So that is much better than VW Village who quoted me $40 for the part but $95 for labour! Didn't even bother going to Barloworld, i think they would cost alot more...

And also went to my local paint guy, and he said, no point doing a touch up on a scratch as it would look worst than before because silver is a very hard colour to do touch ups. Is that true?

Just a heads up - cheaper doesn't necessarily mean better.

I charge graphic design work out at $150/hr. I know guys that charge out at $30/hour. Are they better than I am? I'll leave that up to clients to decide.

VW Village are a sponsor on here so please tread respectfully (IE: read the VWGolf.net.au Forum Rules).

I didn't mean to offend the sponsors here, just listed the quotes i got thats all...

Of course price do make a difference... but it depends what it is... like you said for something like graphic design work, price difference do make a difference. but for the indicator clear cover, it is a minor job, which takes less than an hour, hence i chose the cheaper option. I'm sure VW Village would of done a great job and i would of paid that amount as well.

At the other end of this Justin, I choose to price my consulting outside the 'expected' range so that if a person is price sensitive, I don't have to deal with them (and the associated issues). I'm sure in other industries people do the same.

i went through the same excercise when my dad busted up my mirror. i made a pretty comprehensive thread about it here.. http://www.golfmkv.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1331882#post1331882

if you go to your local panel shop expect to fork out ~$100 to get it repainted and make sure you are paying cashy. the paint code is actually noted on the inside of the mirror housing

thanks for that zz2. mine is nowhere near as bad as yours, yours was on the outside, i actually have no damages on the outside of the paintjob, only one the inside (next to the mirrors, from mirror digging into the paint work).

Well tomorrow i'm getting the blinkers cover fixed first... went to my local panel beater, they said touch up won't look good at all (most likely worst than before, they said i may as well leave it as it is, as it can't be seen outside, but only when i'm reversing i see the mark...

So i'm not sure if i will fix the paint job yet... maybe... maybe not... because like you said, if i do they have to do the whole thing.

Maybe the panel beater was like, this is so small, its not worth doing at all lol i'm not really a DIY person, so i wouldn't take it apart myself and give it to them.

anyways thanks for the info.

Got the indicator cover replaced at Autohaus Strecker in Alexandria. It costed $42.27 (part) and $36.36 (labour) + GST = $86.50. It took around 30-45 minutes, walked home had a shower and got a missed call already!! lol

Now onto the paint job... Got a quote from George Loukas repairs also in Alexandria, i've been there before with other minor damages to my other cars... and he quoted me $150 (cash) as they would need to remove the whole thing and respray it, will go to a few other places before choosing.
