Hi guys,

I wasn't planning on getting another car just yet but this came up at a dealer down south and decided to jump on it as it's ready for delivery and chances are if I wanted one the near future I'd be looking at quite a wait (4-6 months).

All going to plan I should be going to ACT to get it on Saturday!

Specs are:

5dr DSG Candy White
Bi-Xenons
18" Detroits
Adaptive Chassis Control
Camera
MDI
Dark Glass

The car was already fitted with front tint & paint protection (free of charge from the orig order).

Some dealer photos:

So so so so so so pretty
:p

Look at those rims...daym they are sexy! Especially with dark tint and colour coded white.
As you know everyone, CW really gets me going....sorry Greg I'll try not to get too excited lol.

great choice!

Yeah i'll miss the R32 sound, handling and looks but this should be a great car as well. I was pretty keen on the demo silver Pirelli at my local dealer but they aren't letting it go for a reasonable price so ruled it out.

Was originally going to look at a cheap runaround and the missus wanted an auto but most cheap autos are pretty sluggish. Good chance to try out DSG and get something I like driving as well. New Polo GTI would have been good too but seem like a while away.

Nice so you went ahead, hopefully they saw you well with that price >D

Had to decide fairly quickly but the spec was almost as i would have ordered it from the factory. The guys at Gerald Slaven have been great to deal with. They seem to have a fair amount of different stock too.

Thanks Cam, I have wanted a GTI for a while and CW is the colour i've always loved (although all the colours look good). Can't really justify spending on the new R at the moment and want to keep this car fairly OEM.

Nothing wrong with the last car, I just get used to things after a while and usually want the opposite to what i have if that makes sense. Also wasn't planning on replacing it so soon but couldn't help myself.

Does it have that front stone chip film on there dude? If not, make sure you get it applied before the trek back up to QLD!

Looks hot! The Bi-xenons really make the front look very aggressive!

Doesn't have the film, but how bad are the roads?

Not so much the roads, just the random stone chips that you will surely get sprayed with, from trucks & other motorists.

Make sure you get it applied before you leave the dealership dude...its well worth it!

Yeah i had it on the last car and basically never had any stone chips, maybe one hit. Agree it does a good job.

Cheers Justin. It could just be the photo, it wouldn't be tinted as dealers don't go any darker than 35% and its illegal to tint the front isn't it? Heres another pic.

Ps. I love the detroits and hopefully by getting those as well as ACC I wont be tempted to mod it :D. Wasn't sure about ACC but could be fairly worthwhile.

Just means the glass is tinted from the factory. Not much info on it but apparently it's not privacy glass so who knows. Wouldnt normally order it but was already spec'd up.

Just wondering how doable driving from SYD to BNE is in one day, google maps says 12hrs...

Wouldn't mind staying in SYD sat night but wondering if it's better to stay somewhere further north to split up the trip.

Have tomtom on the iPhone and got a car mount/charger so hopefully that does the trick.

Any recommendations are welcome cheers.

Thanks Jig, wont be doing too much for a while and chose a few more options from the factory than last time when i bought the R32. The new Osir stuff does look tasty though.

There were no plates on the car (got a 2 day permit) but still tried to obey the speed limits where possilbe as they could probably track it back to me. Didn't worry about e-tolls too much though. Didn't get pulled over once but eyes were tired last night on the 2 x 3hr runs.

I kept all the gear with the intention of putting it in the next car, whatever that was going to be. I did let one amp go at the time though, may replace it later, may not.

It's the kind of stuff i hate buying and selling but will most likely put it in considering the stealth sub from my MK5 should fit.

Not in a big hurry though, will just think about the set up for a while. Enjoying the DSG fart sound for now, having had 6mt last time.

A few pics my gf took on Saturday at Gerald Slaven Volkswagen.

The whole process was very smooth from organising it from interstate right up to the delivery. Many thanks to Phillip (PhillipVWDealer) and Trent (salesman) for looking after me and for being great to deal with. Very thorough running through the cars features as well.

Highly recommend paying them a visit if you are in ACT, or interstate for that matter as they have a nice dealership there (and spotted a few other new GTI's in the yard with some tasty options too). Was also presented with a bottle of wine and a nice Gerald Slaven wine cooler, which I didn't expect at all.

Appreciated the warm welcome at the airport too, absolute champion!

Fair few but no kangaroo's at least. It's only at night that it's a drama.

Headlights are awesome, these ones can turn as well as you go around the corners which you notice in small dark streets! Haven't quite worked out the daytime lights yet, the inner lights seem to be on all the time.

Glad to hear you've made it home safely Greg. How many kms on the car now? Must be just about ready to see if the rev limiter works, haha! :p

Hi Lima, there is around 1300km now. The car had 60km on it when i picked it up as the went to Fyshwick and back (to do the tint or paint protection i assume).

The economy is pretty good, used 2 and a bit tanks to get back, (first tank was provided by the dealer!). Was varying the revs a fair bit where i could but not babying it either. Got about 600-650km out of the 2nd tank but apparently economy gets better as the car breaks in. Was getting a bit stressed once the fuel light came on and the MFD was dropping by 5km quite fast (down to 20km left) so had to drop into Pottsville.

5km intervals, Mr Fancy Pants, the Mk5 drops in 10km intervals, haha. I would expect you'll be get more than 650km to a tank of highway/freeway driving in future, too.

Thanks for the nice comments gents :).

I just washed it to get all the bugs off, did a few soaks first.

I copped one stone chip on the roof right at the front near the glass :(. Otherwise all good. One of the wheels had a hairline scratch which i noticed on the day but nothing really to worry about.

Anyway wont be doing any mods yet will enjoy it 'as is' for as long as i can!

The Bi-Xenons make the car look better but the MK6 styling is still growing on me, still loving the MK5 shape. Have to admit CW + 18" looks the goods.

I just read the Motor mag and the Polo GTI does 0-100 in the same time as a Golf GTI... 135kw with 250nm from a 1.4L engine thats nuts. $28,000 !

It took a while for me to to get used to the new shape but think it's a winner, plus it feels like a more expensive car with the better interior materials and updates, feels a lot more solid like it should. I was still looking at MK5 GTI's and fairly keen on them but didn't want to pay over 30k and hard to find the colour/options i wanted as well as some of them are out of warranty.

Yeah the cornering Bi-xenons are awesome, Maverick has some nice info on his site (http://www.my-gti.com/1989/volkswagen-cornering-headlights-dynamic-steered-headlights-and-static-cornering-lights).

The Polo would be a nice cheap but once you add a few options it's not worth it IMO, I wouldnt pay over 30k for it even though it looks great but have a feeling it would still look very small in real life, and the twin charge tuning potential isn't as great (as well as more stress on a small motor i assume).

Public Holidays are gazetted by each state, see this website (http://australia.gov.au/topics/australian-facts-and-figures/public-holidays) for links to your state.

From memory everyone gets the Monday off this year with the exception of Tasmania.

Yeah, usually i wouldn't chose too many options (and didn't with the last car) as it can get out of hand and you have to call it quits at some point. Don't usually get the money back on options/mods anyway.

Did you get a slimline plate for the front Greg? I just want to keep my stock non-personalised plates but want the front one to be slimline as I've seen a few of them around. Cool, nice combo. Not too long to go but the wait is killer. Luckily i only had to wait about 1 week after deciding I wanted this car. Leather would have been nice but bit hot in QLD most of the time and actually like the Jacky trim for a change (R32 had leather).

Will probably add the RNS510 sometime too.

The normal MK5 Rain Sensing coding only codes the MFD, not the sensor.

Also haven't got the auto up function working with the keyfob that allows you just to hold down the button for a second instead of the whole time the windows are going up.

Chirp sound only works when locking not unlocking but the MK6 are still quite new and have asked Mav to look into it and see if ross-tech know.

Hey Greg, now that you've had some more time in the GTI, what are its pros and cons compared to your old R32?

Hi Liam, haven't exactly been driving it heaps (apart from ACT to BNE lol) but they are both good. The GTI feels a bit more lively but grip in the wet isn't as good but still dont mind the DSG fart sound. The R32 is good at punching it off the line but the GTI feels faster if you put your foot down when moving.

Trying not to over think it too much but the GTI is better value for money.

These aren't really new mods but never did them on my previous car. Small simple mods that lift the interior.

Ordered these from gulfstream11 on GolfMKV for 11 GBP delivered. (He also makes .:R32 ones and probably others).

For best results prepare the plastic with Isopropanol to remove grease and allow better bonding. I used some neutral cure clear silicone adhesive on each end where there is no text. This type of glue is also fairly easy to remove later if need be. Just don't used too much as you don't want it to spread too much when you press it down.

Got around to installing the Osir O-rest. It's a good match with the other pedals but the finish was a bit dirty so I took the black plastic inserts out, gave it a clean with some stainless steel cleaner rinsed and dryed it. Put the inserts back in place with new tape.

I decided to use double sided tape as i was fairly certain it won't move but can always screw it down later. It also stops rattles and didn't want to get a 'click' when you put your foot on it etc, so needs a bit more than just the screws. I like to keep most mods reversible, but can't imagine getting the tape off later that easily. It's a bit awkward taking the whole assembly out (or moreso getting it back in place perfectly).

The first layer I used some foam mounting squares, cutting in half where necessary:

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/2460/resizeofrotationofpictu.jpg

I then did another full later with a roll of black double sided tape from supercheap (18mm x 5m x 1mm). I went around the holes as I wasn't sure if i was going to screw it down or not.

http://img14.imageshack.us/img14/2867/resizeofrotationofpictul.jpg

Applied a third 1mm layer as the tape wasn't sitting slightly too low and a bit more than flush is fine as it may get flatter over time and i didn't want it to move. Dont forget to take the tape backing off each time.

http://img63.imageshack.us/img63/2460/resizeofrotationofpictu.jpg

I think the footrest would look odd without any washers/screws so decided to just glue the Osir washers in place with some silicon glue. You can always screw the screws in later if it moves or they fall out. I used a toothpick to apply it and also to go around the edge of the washer to get rid of any excess glue then wiped down.

Those log inserts into the seat levers are a great fit! It's like VW was meant to put something in there but never got around to it.

Love the look of the OSIR footrest cover too. Very clean and again, it looks like it was meant to be there!

On a side note: I've used so many different types of double sided tape and nothing works as great as 3M tape (the red one, sold as outdoor tape). It's thin but it's stronger than anything else out there.

Thanks guys, it's good to do some neat little mods to keep me interested in between expensive ones which i'm trying to avoid (but Got APR Stage 1 a few weeks ago :P).

I couldn't find a 3M roll at the time but no doubt it's the best. I recommend getting black tape though, just incase there is a small gap and white may be visable.

Another thing i forgot to mention with the seat inserts - do a test fit before gluing on as you have to bend them very slightly to get them to sit nice and flush. I agree Justin, looks like they were meant to be!

Cheers,

I just can't decide on a life plan!

This one has a few extras and is getting close to the basic R price, so just weighing it up.

Still love it so doesn't matter, just have other stuff to spend money on as well!

yeh, i know what you mean.
looking at buying another property so money will well and truly stop going into my car soon. very sad.:(

Mate dont sell the GTI just to buy an R - from everything i've read (and you read the same places I do), it's not really anything 'more' in day to day driving.

Enjoy the GTI for now - mod it a little and if you really want a car with more potential - look into that in 2-3 years.

Cant tell you not to buy property though - best thing you could ever do. Though buying an R will defeat the purpose.

If you have to buy a Getz to buy a place, then perhaps you should keep the GTI until such time as you can afford both.

Good adive Jay & HC...

A property and grounding is important, but i'm the kind of person that will get a cheap car; then get the shits with it; then get one that's too expensive etc.. the GTI seems like a really good all rounder that keeps you happy and isn't too cheap etc.

Will just have to be patient and set a few goals. I agree all the R hype probably got to me a bit and i know the GTI would be as good 90% of the time. I'd be back where i started as, stock for stock the new R isn't really any better than the R32.

Cheers,

Id keep the GTI, selling your car to buy a house will result in you buying another nice car in 6 months time and having lost a bucket load on the GTI. My brother sold his rex to buy a house and with in 12 months he had another one,

I agree with Jay, for the money it just isnt worth an upgrade, with the APR Stg1 you have you've got the same power output if not better than the R, the only difference then is AWD and if you arent tracking it then do you really need it?

That would be fairly likely. I just flip out from time to time and want different things.

I don't track it and agree, my Stage 1 felt heaps more fun than the quick test drive in the stock Golf R.

A really good mate once told me the cheapest car is the one you have ;).

Nothing wrong with the R32, i loved mine a lot.. this is great too, both different but good ;).

Haha not already mate! Just keep it and save your money for the house.

I've been there, sold my MPS and drove the wife's Yaris for 2 years. Not easy by any means and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but it paid off. But in saying that if I had my time over I wouldn't have sold it, it was like selling my soul!

If you are thinking about property, then get your mind off the R because that's just going to make matters worse! lol

Before I had the GTI, I spent almost 2 years with a Mazda 3 due to buying more property.

I lost big time on my 2006 Audi TT with a few mods. It just is not worth it.

As you said, the GTI is the best most reasonable all rounder if you want a fair balance.

If I wasn't being so sensible now, I'd be driving a new M3. But affording it and needing it are two different things.

I think I'm in the same boat, I'm probably going to stop working on my track car. To get it engineer approved so I can drive it to QR would be way too expensive but there is no other way of me getting it there, I don't want to invest in a trailer. I think the plans on making a dedicated track car at the moment are put on hold :(

Would be good to have a road registered one then just drive out there. Sounds like a good project mate!

Take it however you like, being your thread or not.

I don't think that's a wise decision, what's the point? I agree with others that the money lost will be far better spent on a property.

The GTI is a nice car, the R seriously isn't worth it if you have a GTI already. I'm waiting for the MK7.

Do as you wish, but you had a nice R32 that you sold and said you needed to down grade.... then you got a brand new GTI. Not much of a downgrade still a good car, now this? Doesn't make sense.

it's your choice at the end of the day, i agree with the rest of the people.

Sounds like you're losing sleep Greg!

For me, once my car is up for an EOI it's usually too late. IE: I've thought about letting it go enough to actually let it go and from there on I just want it gone. All the best with the sale if you do manage to sell it at the price you're asking. I'm sure you won't sell it if you have to lose too much on it.

16-06-2010, 03:34 PM
Thanks Justin, that's right mate, wouldn't let it go for too much less than what i paid in this instance. Quite happy to keep it too but may take longer to get where i'm going.

If you had of bought the best colour (United grey) the choice of letting the GTi go would be so much harder to make. Good luck with whatever you plan to do, but remember not to forget the VW family on this forum mate. We won't hold it against you if you decide to buy that Mazda shades advertised on here.

Looks like my GTI could be gone this time next weekend, the buyer has left a deposit but his finance guys are stuffing around (already approved though). Will be giving it a good wash and clean tomorrow.

Ps. Didn't see the previous two posts till now.

As others have stated... good choice for getting property.

I was opposite... was driving my EK4 for nearly 8 years, bought an apartment over a year ago, sold the Civic now driving an MKV R32.

Cars can always wait. I regret not buying property earlier!

Moving back home after summer, saving up for my next one.

Grats, G. You did a lot in six months.

How so? The best thing i did with this car is not to mod it, don't think i've achieved much in the last six months.

Although it's a reluctant sale I know that there will be other cars later but need to get a property sometime so will work towards that cheers.
