Liam you are a tease! i lurve it
PS: wasn't this the one of the golf that loon rebuild?
Yes.
It's a genuine GTI delivered to the UK in 1980. One of the last MY80 models, with a 1.6 litre engine and early 5 speed manual.
In answer to schoona I've sorted out the starting issues, mostly, it's just a bit rough and low idling when cold. Once that is sorted I can get cracking on the other minor issues one should expect with a 30 year old car, haha.
god i love that little car!

Really nice ride!
Look that paintwork!!! shiny as new, is that the original colour?
Yes, and no. The car has had an outer body respray (before I got it) and it was supposed to be painted in the original Reflex Silver, but the colour mix is a bit too dark. Has a bit too much blue/purple to it. Just one of the many things on "the list", but lower in priority than most of the others.
Love the Mk1 Lima.
What a little beast, such a nice stance too

Looks awesome Liam, oldschool rocks!
Was it already here or private import? Looks in great condition got any interior shots?
It was imported here in the early-mid 90s. I reckon it had two owners in the UK. It's had two previous owners in Australia, so I'm the fifth owner I guess. It had its 30th birthday in March, but the car was in a workshop waiting for a new distributor, so that was a bit of downer, haha.
Some interior pics below, taken after we gave it a bit of a clean up. Probably should have vacuumed first though. It's a bit tatty in places, but overall in very good condition considering its age. I think the seats must have changed because as far as I can tell it was tartan seats only for GTIs until the MY81 update a few months after my car was built.
The steering wheel is not original, it should be a three spoke "Wolfsburg" wheel. I have one, but the horn push is busted so its just a matter of trying to find some parts or a new wheel to get the look more authentic.

The car has spent about half its life in the UK and every year they have to have an MOT inspection. I have all the certificates except the first two. My guess is that this was the first owner and the second owner was the anal one who collected all the paperwork. He was the guy the brought the car to Australia and sold it pretty much as soon as he got here. The next owner had it for 10-12 year and I understand the majority of those saw the car sitting in a shed. Loon from VWW was the next owner and he "restored" the car to a degree. There's a lot of little bugs to iron out to get it truly concourse.

Love the MK1 GTI mate, I'm just about to pick up something quite special for my self in 2 weeks. Can't freakin wait..LVD
Very nice liam! Is it expensive to maintain?
Not yet, haha. As a rule I drive it once or twice a week and I think I've only put 2-3 tanks of fuel into it. Haven't had a service or oil change yet.

wow thats great liam!! Those BBS's set it off!!!
just a quick question....
how much u reckon it would cost for it to be "truly concourse" as you have stated in one of your previous posts? as in, would u care to share with us what needs to be done or what needs to be fixed, replaced, whatever to get it running smooth as silk? Not just engine but both interior and exterior also?
Its just that im fascinated how stunning the car looks given that its a 30 year old car!!!
NFI on cost, but its the time it would take to find really minor details, stuff like interior switches that are less faded/worn and so on. Some of the door seals need work and so on. Ideally I'd fit an 80s period stereo. I'd also like to retrim the seats.
In terms of mechanicals it probably just needs to sit with someone and work through the fiddly bits that once you fix, it sends you on another tangent. There's nothing major, but there's no escaping it's a 30yo car.
Another item on the list would be a full body respray. The currrent colour is not the true OEM paint, so that's another thing on the list.
Not sure if I'll ever cross them all off, but we'll see.

Once again, damn nice work!
Yeah that's a good photo location. You can get good sunset lighting on the roof with views across the city or to Black Mountain. Plus it's not too bad with artificial lighting on the lower levels. Over the weekends you can usually get a whole floor to yourself as well.

It has four wheel centres now.
Not sure of the exact date of manufacture on the stereo, but it must be close to be around the mark. Perhaps mid-late 80s???
New instrument cluster and BNIB period radio have now been installed (thanks Mick).

Very nice Liam.
The new tapedeck and steering wheel are great.
Now you just need to source some 1980 Mix tapes.
Fashion has more or less come full circle, so white shoes / bad glasses are fine if that's your thing already. ;)
I have some old tapes in a box somewhere. When our renos are over hopefully I can find them.
1981… the Sound. Yeah!
Hi Liam: Congratulations on the write up. I am glad you stayed period correct. It looks so much better saying period correct inside the cabin.

For a 31yo car it's pretty true to its roots. I kinda feel like I am obliged to keep it that way and the longer I keep it I have to try and make it better. If it was a regular Golf I wouldn't mind as much.

Long time no post. My car spent the majority of 2012 in Sydney getting the fuel injection sorted out. The end result being the car is running like a dream now, heaps better than it ever has. Starts first go every time. It's fantastic!
Alas, also in that time some rust has been discovered which needs repairing. That coupled with some crap going down in my personal life means I don't have the passion or mental and financial commitment to put things right so I will be selling the car.
When I get my shit together I'll post up a proper ad.
