View Full Version : The 1.8L 20v Engine
hi there, i'm new so be kind...ish
I have a timing belt change on a 1998 1.8L 20v MK4 to do.
Man these engine designations are confusing but my (stupid) question/s:
1. Is the 20valve engine a DOHC or SOHC? I havent seen it yet.
2. Is it just an atmospheric version of the GTi's 1.8T?
Cheers for any cam belt tips.

1. It's a DOHC.
2. I don't know 1.8 20v is GLE or GLS but apparantly 1.8 20v isn't non-turbo gti.
In UK, some marketing people wanted to cheat customers that name 1.8 20v as GTi and name 1.8T 20v as GTI. I mean that is stupid. 1.8 20v got 125bhp in UK for special adjustment. However, 1.8T 20v got 150 bhp, 180 bhp and 204 bhp these three version. Now Do u still think 1.8 20v is just an atmospheric version of the GTi's 1.8T? If so, check this out. 1.8T 20v got MQ250 transmission but 1.8 20v got MQ200 transmission. 200 and 250 mean the maximum torque seperately. They had different theory entirely.

They came out in 1998/99 with 1.8 version. Audi also did and kept the 1.8 till 2003 or so when VW went 2.0 in 2000.

It runs the same timing belt as a 1.8t

Quoting the 3 letter engine code will clear all the ambiguity up.
There was an "NA GTI" 20v in the UK for a while. It was dropped in favour of the 2 litre 8V after a year or so. The 20V wasn't torquey enough. Not that the 8V was much better.
The low power GTIs had silver GTI badges, the 150hp ones had a red 'I' on them. GTI
