Hey sorry guys this may seems stupid.
but I'm a P Plater and as you know turbos aren't really a friend of ours due to other external entities.
My question lies with do you think its possible to get away with a GTI on my p's. Say I debadge it, change the engine head cover (another question lays in that. is it possible to put a normal GLE head cover?), lower the boost, get a different air filter so I can reduce if not silence the turbo sound making it stealth. what would you think the possibility of getting caught be?
as for handling turbo, i currently which between cars but one of them is a MKV TDI. so i have a turbo already so i think it will be able to handle the turbo feel well. I'm not that much of a hoon i must admit i do hoon a little but don't we all. well reading a lot of reviews a lot of people have said the gti or r32 or nothing for the mk4 on build and engine quality.
also could cops be able to tell if its a gti from the plates? i did a free nsw rego check online with the rta of a gti i know and it say the vehicle is 1999 SILVER VOLKSWAGEN TYPE 3B SEDAN
thanks much appreciated

no matter what car you drive, if u act/drive stupid u'll get pulled over and unfortunately for you, a GTI is p plate restricted.
As far as "getting away" with it, that's entirely your call. It's up to you whether or not you'd like to risk paying a fine and losing points on your licence (4 on red, 7 on green if i recall correctly unless they changed it since I was a p plater) or losing your licence altogether. Some cops may not recognise it as a GTI but some might. You never know if they're going to ask you to pop the bonnet or what have you. All that crap about lowering booost, silencing the turbo or whatever, etc is all pointless. If you're in the car driving a restricted vehicle and you get caught for doing so, you're done
I think what you're asking is if the GTI is inconspicuous. Yes, it is...compared to, say, an early model WRX or an S13 or an R32 GTST. But asking advice whether its inconspicuous ENOUGH to get away from breaking the law? That decision rests entirely on your shoulders. Regarding whether cops can check if its a GTI or not by punching ur plate details into the computer, yes it's likely that it may be.
No matter what type of car you drive, the fact that ur a P plater means that you may get hassled moreso than someone who isnt. That shiny red/green P on your car attracts attention anyway so yeah...
Up to you.

i wouldnt risk it Javed if you are living in kingsford area, i live there too, theres many RBT's and cops patrolling.
The thing is that the cops around here are... how would i say it, more suspicious of red P platers, back last year when i was on my greens driving my integra, i was pulled over by an unmarked randomly asking me to open my bonnet as he suspected a turbo in it -.-" what can i say honestly, speechless really some cops are clueless about cars? i actually STATED " Really ? a turbo..."
in the end i solely believe it was the fact i was a P plater that attracted the cops but i mean as stephen stated its all at your own risk. But if i was you i wouldnt risk it really, you'd probably worry everytime you pass a cop while driving, and who wants that kind of feeling ?
Good luck anyways which ever path you take :)

I mean technically (at least in NSW) police can't force you to open the bonnet without a warrant (my sisters a cop, comes in handy :D) but if you say no then it's just a but suss, but if you say that you've just put GTI wheels on, it could fool some cops but its all up to you whether you run the risk or not!!

A mate's girlfriend recently bought a GTI despite being on her P's. She's a safe driver but she got pulled over and got done for driving a restricted car. Cop wasn't particularly nice about it either, although she wasn't doing anything careless (but that's another story). Just saying that it does happen, and a GTI can easily be distinguished from its wheels and mesh grille. You can change the engine cover but if the cop catches your bluff and makes you get it checked out at an inspection station, you're fucked.
You're driving a TDI right? Use the GTI upgrade money for airride and some dope wheels. Instant boobies.
Edit: Oops, you're referring to a Mk4... my suggestion still stands lol.

Not trying to fight u or anything but im pretty sure that is incorrect.. The same theory would go hand in hand when they search your car, which they legally can.

thanks, its true it is a risk, just curious, you know the young generation trying to push everything...
and yeah i thought its a mkiv you can't see the turbo in the engine bay and if i change the engine head and silenced it on the spot engine inspections won't matter. debadge front and back, replacing it with a 2.0 generation badge on that would throw them off. i plan on getting the mkiv r32 wheels. so you know what i mean make it look like a stock 2.0 generation just with mags. driving normally
but i still honestly am thinking about it. one thing pushing me away though is the fact that i get pulled over 5 times a week when i'm driving the golf as a daily, and i haven't been pulled over with the mirage besides when i was doing 70 over a roundabout in front of a cop and the lady didn't say anything but give me directions cause i was lost (if i knew how to link and image she had every write to defect me on the spot) . I'm scared though that when i'm actually doing something wrong they will get me. but lately i've been driving with p's off and not been stopped. it's crazy how much they target p platers, but with all my friends i've been breath test, drug tested more than all of them put together. GOD LOOKING ARAB IS THE WORST.
and as for the golf is mkv tdi and it's not entirely mine so modifications is not my call but a 70 year olds ladies. yeah modifications are not an option.
but dayum son if modification were an option it would be on some bbs, airbags, r32 lead tail lights etc by now..
but my mirage hell no am i doing modification to my mirage.
yeah if your ever at kford maccas look out for a golf with the plates 4747, its 9/10 chance me, give me a shout out.
anyways thanks again for the advice, much appreciated. i'll think of another car i want besides an e30 which is impossible to find a non molested one for a reasonable price. leaning towards an 07 XR4 fiesta any one have thoughts on them?

dw about the gti :P , whos the chic in ur dp ;) smokinnn
but yes unfortunately the gti is a dead give away to cops and its not worth it, best you can do is apply for an exemption i believe and see how that goes. if its your only registered car etc they should allow you to drive it or for employment purposes !!!
the tdi has same if not more torque then the gti which makes it a very very powerful little car !!!

HAHA omg your telling, i only wish i knew who she was. she looks similar my friend though, but its not her :(
i know the GTI but how can you tell, i can't even tell the difference between the MK4 golfs. and I did asking around and if i get my vic P's and drive here for for 3 months with a week back in melbourne i can legally drive the turbo here. BUT THATS EFFORT and instead I'm keen on a Ford Fiesta WQ XR4 now, i just need to learn manual which poses another problem for my self and in addition to that problem i don't have or have any family/friends that have a manual that they could teach me how to drive stick.
the TDi is too quick personally, i read reviews apparently its the same time or .2 seconds off the GTI. I love the car but but I'm scared for speeding offences, one offence and I'm out and with the TDi it's too easy to speed. Also i don't get to drive the golf often as it isn't mine and my mirage i don't drive because my aunty has dubbed it as hers now. So I been looking at Fiesta WQ XR4 but I need to learn manual and wait till my P2's in april or redo my P1's for a manual car.

I'd take the renault clio X65 phase 3 182 cup (yeah its a mouthful) or 182 cup F1 over the XR4 personally...

As stephen8512 said... get a RenaultSport Clio.
You can get a 172 (1035kg, 124kW 200Nm) for 8-10k or a 182 (131kW 200Nm, 1090kg) for 11-14k. They'll crap all over a MkIV GTI. In fact, they're about lineball with a stock MkV.
http://www.fastestlaps.com/comparisons/vw_golf_mk_v_gti-vs-renault_clio_sport_phase_ii_172.html
Why risk it over such a boring and not all that fast car?
Sure, S3, Mk5 GTI, WRX. But a Mk4 with a whopping 110kw?
Get an R32. Perfectly legal.

I WAS LOOKING AT THE CLIO HAHAHA. yes um the forum user J.T gided me toward the clio, carsales has bearly any clio sports with low KMS :(
also i don't know any specialist for the renault, with the ford i have a mate at city ford which will make sure my XR4 would be mint condition mechanically.
and i wish R32, would be mint. but ain't got the plata to afford an initial purchase of a R32 yet alone up keep, insurance and service. but damn i would love an R32.
to me personally I'm not about the performance sector I'm such a ricer in that regard but i hate ricers cars I'd rather just nice, simple, respectable cars.
all about the looks, and a good audio system (not bass rattling hear me from two blocks away, but clear clarity audio). and thats basically my car choice summed up.

Keep the mk5 dump it on air ride, through a chip in the diesel and just drive end story.
imholy
06-10-2011, 01:34 PM
can't i live with the lady. if i chipped her car she would go into a wall for sure, she already thinks the diesel is to powerful.
airbags she would complain that i wasted money and would make me take it out and sell the kit.
it doesn't help when i don't own the vehicle myself outright. thats why buy xr4 or clio sport if i can find a nice low KM one because another golf is too expensive ;)
Going by your list of wants:
BMW e46318ti/325ti

so...you're asking us to support you in a (NSW anyway) illegal activity of driving a car that contravenes your licence conditions?
This sits in the same category as promoting illegal street racing/drifting and other such illegal activities.
Stupid question. Do your time, gain experience, get the GTI when you are legally permitted to do so.

looking back it is a stupid question, i apologies for endorsing any illegal activity it's fine forum member have talked me out of it, making me realise the stupidity of the idea (by stupidity i mean my 18 year old eagerness) . but i was planning to move to victoria in december to live with my father or at least stay there for a while. so the idea arose when i found a good condition gti for a amazing price here in sydney. i was planning to drive the gti for 2 months here until i get to vic which is three months away. in vic it's perfectly legal for me to drive the gti with a vic p plater licence which I'm planning to obtain once i'm there in december. but also it's a stupid law though which only nsw has. vic at least understands some smaller turbos are needed for low performance cars otherwise they remain too sluggish i.e. the golfs.
as for driving i started when i was 13 illegally but in greece illegal driving is a law which is not enforced at all. i've driven quite a lot of hi performance cars from street to exotics varying from SLS AMG, Ferrari 355(think it was a 355, don't quote me on that), Porsche Cayenne Turbo S, to HSV GTS. first car i legally drove was a Lamborghini Gallardo.

So...you're 'planning' on going to Victoria, and 'planning' on getting a Victorian licence? Ok, the NSW cops should be happy with that 'plan'. Go your hardest.
And...you've driven a Lambo Galardo? Never heard of it. But I have heard of the Gallardo. I'm in awe of you...... :icon_neutral:

Please do keep in mind I'm 18 still at school people on this forum are mostly maturer than myself with experience of the real world, i haven't experienced much of the real world, so i'm stuck in my 18 year old schoolboy ideology and the way with i talk to my peer. I'm only now starting to venture into the world. So who to talk, how i talk and how people perceive me is still new as i'm only use to speaking to people my own age who i speak with on a daily basics.

In my personal opinion keep the mirage... its a great first car and reliabe which a P plater needs. Not to mention the TDI is also a perfect P plater car (fuel) not to mention they go surprisingly well.
In conclusion stay with what you have. If you want a golf that bad buy one. But if you buy a GTI and do get done, prepare to pay the consquences (Bend over, drop your pants and pray they arn't to rough) which means say Au revior to your license.

I actually was planning to once i got it. But now it's playing up on me. Need new cv's, new brake pads ask BILL2032. From the outside my car smells really bad. I got now black smoke from the exhaust and my transmission is playing up, every gear it's jumping really badly. But other than that i like driving it. But i don't want to spend money on repairing it. Sad thing is the motor is still a baby with only 57,000km on the clock :(
and yeah gti/turbo = now realised really bad idea.

Javed, after the both of us telling Nick off for wanting to sell EJ25 and upgrading to an RS Turbo.. I can't believe you're thinking of tryna get away with the same shit. We've all been there, we've all wanted to "bend the rules" and buy a turbo but the fact of the matter is this - there's just no point in tryna fight it. You're on your Ps and you're restricted, no way around it. If there was, my car would probably have a snail hanging off the side already :)

haha hahaha i remember that. oh good times. thats what mates are for, looking out for the other when their not thinking right. but who on there p's hasn't thought about breaking the rules and going turbo. but i did find a way around it get a victorian license and then just drive to victoria once every 3 months so you still count as visiting which mean you can abide by you vic turbo rule so you won't need to change your licence over if you stay for under three months. .but if i do move to melbourne i'm looking at gti there but while i'm here XR4's and clio (which i'll probably end up getting when i drive the mirage to the ground) (hahah Julhas, foot down on the pedel to the ground couldn't get the mirage past 70 and up hill doing 10 foot firmly on the ground), i have nick looking at XR4 too cause we both want manual :L move melbourne with me get turbo i got three free bed rooms at my dads place :D

get a mk4 golf 2.slow for now, and when your p plates are up buy a gti.
or if you want a renault go get one, I understand why you look only at turboed car when there are so many options out there.
You could get an h6 subi legacy for around 10k, 3.0 flat six
or a mazda 626 with the, 2.5 v6 six
Bora v5 or bora vr6 4-motion. Basically a slightly detuned .:R32 at a less than half the price.
mk3 golf vr6, 2.8 staggered six for 10k you could get a really clean vr6 really great cars to drive.
Fast enough to impress your mates, sounds bad ass like an .:R32, is front wheel drive so isnt too complex,
and are really easy to mod, once you want a turbo you could just turbo the vr6 and have a riot.
